It took me a long time to find a demo on how to do this lol. I need a book of xuan paper for chinese ink painting... about 4x7 or a bit bigger.... do you know where they sell these?
Well and what is Japanese about this? I used to bind my journals as a kid like this, and i am german. But well, ok at least i know now, that my style was not wrong and that i am close to being a real bookbinder *G*
Well said... the question now is: Does it make any difference to the fact that it works?
All i am pointing out is, that it may now be Japanese standard, but it is, indeed, the easiest and most logical way to bind a book if you have close to no idea...
It's widely accepted that this sewing pattern is strongly associated with East Asia due to its widespread use (and most likely, invention as well) in these regions. I'm not sure where you're getting that this is "now Japanese standard," AFAIK casing-in and perfect binding are respectively the hardcover and paperback standards worldwide. And if you get into library/conservation methods, the techniques get much more numerous. I'd say this is more a traditional/fine art technique, even in Japan.
After watching about 10 other videos on book binding I find this one. The technique is simpler than the other ones, and the result is more beautiful, with more room for creativity. Thanks!
The paper and paint was a style of art called intagio. You drip wax onto the paper in a pattern and then paint the paper. The ironing part is to remove the wax. Can also paint first and wax over for the multi-toned toned effect. Can be done with student-quality watercolors. For more information on intagio, look at the Easter Egg how-to's.
thanks for posting this. the way the end knot was hidden within the book was super cool and i ended up using that technique for my own project after seeing this. super helpful.
its simple : just use a wax crayon and drawwadever pattern u want and make sure its waxy enough or else it will ruin ur effort , paint silighty diluted paint over it and volia ! Its done! Tip: try to use darker colored paints
i had no idea there was a community of people who did this. I made a book for my girlfriend recently with a sewing needle and a hammer haha. Lets just say it was an excruciatingly long process in which i had no idea what i was doing. But the end product was great.
It's also called a bone folder. You can find it in most crafts and art stores. It's made in either wood, plastic, or actual bone (I think). I have a plastic one myself.
I m wondering.. what kind of thread do you use?

It goes ridiculously fast, does anyone know where there is a diagram that can be followed? (For the stitching that is.)

I used to eat Udon noodles as a kid in NYC. Nevertheless, Udon noodles were Japanese noodles. Does that help?
