These trucks use the same kind of internals as 03 04 cobras do, which is a kellog forged crank and mahle forged pistons and mahle h beam rods, when ford made 03 04 cobras they used the same internals as the lightnings do, there good for close to a 1000 hp , lightnings and cobras have the best stock short blocks, ur a dumb ass if you blow one up at 500 hp, use good gas and keep the fuel fat and happy , BAM ur good to go

@nomorev6 lightnings don't have the same long block as the 03-04 cobras, they just have a regular old 5.4l same as the all the f-150s they're only good for 500 hp to the rear wheels on the stock long block

@Slipknotyk06 Lol, because old school is the way to go, it's more precise. I can say how Dodge's 347 (5.7) beats out Chevy's 350 (5.7) in horsepower, with less displacement. I love the sound of those 5.4's though.

The Lightning, though is a 331 Supercharged running 5-7 pounds of boost usually. This engine has iron block/alum heads, which is a combination that isn't my favorite. I prefer all-aluminum, like in the 2011 Shelby GT500.

i hate those ppl who cant back it up im not a ford guy at all but i do like the lightnings i just heard shit all my driving life that their engines cant handle the supercharger and their engines blow stock with no mods after runnin them hard for a few months my buddy sold his bc the engine kept overheating, blowing up out of his exhaust, or some internal part breakin off but ive always raced em and i couldnt stay with em stock but now with a few mods i beat lightly modded ones

i have a 02 lightning. i havent done anything to it yet. im pretty sure the first thing im gonna do is a pully kit and a new exhaust from the headers back. i really dont know much about working on cars yet but i am slowly learning. do i need to take it to anyone special or can any good shop take care of these upgrades for me. sorry for sounding stupid but i dont know much about these trucks. the guy i bought it from said not to do anything to at all, but i want atleast 600 hp eventually.

I just put +6lb pulley, C&L plenum, 95mm mass, single blade T.B., and Diablo tune on my 02. It's not too hard, the pulley was the hardest. Truck ran 13.59 et before, now I'm thinking 12's. Roads here are still crappy from winter so no real test runs yet. A buddy in Cal set me up with the parts for around $2,000 - Brandt Racing Enterprises did me good!

the factory block is good till 500-600

just make sure u dont run it lean or rich after pully that's when the damage begins

and upgrade the vavlebody in the trans and have johny lightning do a dyno tune

The internals crap out at 500-600RWHP, need new Pistons and Rods. Replace them and whipple it at 21psi, you'll love it.

Thats why you replace the stock rod / piston with forged ones when you decide to go big on the horsepower :) All you need is forged piston / rod and your safe to around 1,000hp... I've heard up to 1,200 on lightning forums.

but i do know lightnings have a problem with not enough spark-plug threading, and they blow out on high horsepower runs. but you can always do the GT500 head swap and go to DOHC and not have to worry about it. but still. hands down lightnings are amazing :D

They actually fixed that problem in the 03-04 models. went from 4 to 8 thread heads.
