From memory, this about a guy that owned a duplex house... and lived on one side of it. He would live in one side of the duplex for a while.. live his life... then get tired of it, then move over to the other side.

According to Stipe, he would flip-flop back and forth several times... habitating both sides of the house as saw fit.. eventually the fellow passed away, and later was found copies of a book he had written called "Life and how to live it."

Stipe went on to say that that guy had written those books and had them all published, but he didn't sell one copy--he stocked them all away in a closet! When the guy died, the people who went to clean out the house found this closet filled up with these books, and each book was exactly the same--"Life and How to Live It"! I mean--that's just crazy!

This song is about Brivs Mekis, a man who built a wall in his house. He would live on one side for a while, then switch to the other when he got bored. When he died, they found a huge pile of books in his closet that he wrote and had published. The book was titled Life And How To Live It

I wouldn't call 2003 "the old days"! 2003 is quite recent if you consider that REM's first full length album, Murmur, came out in 1983! They're still full of energy and are a great live act even after all these years. You can't say that about most bands that have been around as long as REM.
