From memory, this about a guy that owned a duplex house... and lived on one side of it. He would live in one side of the duplex for a while.. live his life... then get tired of it, then move over to the other side.
According to Stipe, he would flip-flop back and forth several times... habitating both sides of the house as saw fit.. eventually the fellow passed away, and later was found copies of a book he had written called "Life and how to live it."
Stipe went on to say that that guy had written those books and had them all published, but he didn't sell one copy--he stocked them all away in a closet! When the guy died, the people who went to clean out the house found this closet filled up with these books, and each book was exactly the same--"Life and How to Live It"! I mean--that's just crazy!
This song is about Brivs Mekis, a man who built a wall in his house. He would live on one side for a while, then switch to the other when he got bored. When he died, they found a huge pile of books in his closet that he wrote and had published. The book was titled Life And How To Live It
these guys are so amazing live, i've tried to take all my friends to the show when they come around since 1988 on the green tour, old enough to drive.
I wouldn't call 2003 "the old days"! 2003 is quite recent if you consider that REM's first full length album, Murmur, came out in 1983! They're still full of energy and are a great live act even after all these years. You can't say that about most bands that have been around as long as REM.
i didn't mean 2003 was the old days. I meant the performance they gave was like watching them in the old days. Like back in the mid 80's when they were performing this song on a regular basis.
Lol..."Teen Age Riot"...R.E.M really was ahead of every band by at least 3 years.

You should have been there live in the 80's when they did this song... The Fables tour was amazing.

Peter Buck's intro still gives me the chills. This may be one of their best live performances ever?

Who said that R.E.M. are past it? Bollocks are they...elder statesmen maybe, but they could show modern bands a thing or two about live performance

Either way... this song... this version gives me goosbumps. Holy crap.
If you tire of one side, the other side serves you best.
I will write a book, it will be called... "Life and how to live it."

Wow.. I never knew that. I always wondered... I mean since I was a teenager what had happened to those books.
I would have liked to have read it.

Copies of the actual printed books show up on Ebay from time to time. They tend to go for quite steep amounts...
