I read another account where people heard rumors of Auschwitz and "the ovens" and one man even escaped from Auschwitz, returned to warn the ppl what he saw but ppl were in a state of denial. They were holding on to a hope that the war would end or the claims were exaggerated. Plus they just didn`t want to leave their community so the majority all went to the ghettos together and stayed there together. I think that was probably the state of mind of most of the ppl.
something like that happened in Elli Wiesel's autobiography Night. The man who told the community about the concentration camps was seen as a senile old man, so everone was in denial.
Thanks for the upload!
