HIV is a global problem. Using global statistics is the most accurate way to discuss it (unless you're choosing to focus on a specific subpopulation for a particular legitimate reason). Globally, most people who are HIV+ and who have died of AIDS are heterosexual and contracted it through heterosexual sex. There's no reason to arbitrarily exclude the continent of Africa or the heterosexual epidemic there when talking about HIV/AIDS--and every reason not to.
