I think French people are one of the most fussy and extrovert among Europeans (as you may notice from Sarkozy's style). And when French citizens are not contented, they go strike. This is probably because they believe in their freedom of expression. Anyway, I could hardly think of countries around the world that could beat French patisseries/bakeries and cuisine though...macarons, fois gras, champagne, escargots...yum yum
I think there is definitely more to france than just food, fashion, culture or dodgy history. Every country has had its own dark times. Being french and living abroad, I miss the laid back life style and the time we take to enjoy ourselves and life, we are very much opposed to the rat race we are more and more imposed with. But it sometimes seems we're fighting a losing battle.
France is not dead, who ever said that is lying. Perhaps the select few, who hold fast to the dead traditions, in fact keep the originality of the culture alive. The New France is entirely different and wonderful; don't live in the past. Being unfashionalbe is ultimately chic.
Before to send all of these comment you may at first to have a look to your country. Is that a real mirror of what you want? no well politic, global market politic, Georges Bush President?
Best wishes for your futur guys. For election i feel good for Obama. He is the best thing which can happen to you.
Me, I love France, with it's kinda fox who runs very fast in the streets. And also the food and wine, after that, you can belch and fart as must as you want. ^^ Anyway, the better thing about France, it's just you can belch as loud as you want in the street, everybody gonna laugh. You can try if you want ;-)
So the point is people are able to make sacrifice but if they have any doubts about whether a new law will serve the common well being or the interest of a few ones, they easily turns suspicious and protest, like seen during the last 20 years.
Then rise Sarkozy, an unknown kind of politician in France, in who people put their trust, with the hope he would lead a true and honest crusade against the stasis of politic and social institutions. One year after the election, he still have to prove it.
Demonstrations: Better than being "Sheeples", don't you think? And I remind you that not everyone voted for Sarkozi, he only won by the outlayer of his right foot! Poor Ségolène gave up, but she should be President IMO. Fishy.
French society carry a lot of contradiction and the main challenge is to simplify the situation.
People rejected european constitution and go strike against anything that may hurt the wellfare-state, on the other hand people feel that the system has severe flaws, therefore voted for a man that will (at least was expected to) implement drastic solutions.
The problem is twofold. First, public opinion has strong influence on the government, hence favoring demagogic, rather efficient, measures. Second, there is a deep, culturally anchored mistrust against the government. The former politician generations came from ENA, a school where they mainly got training in political combat. This lead to the top guys like Chirac or Mitterand, masters in this art.
Lke every other country, France will have it's knockers, but hey! check the place out- great weather, (most of the time), best food and wine in the world, most beautiful language, classic towns and villages, elegant, chic. Great roads, vast and varied landscape, and of course, stunningly beautiful women
Come on, there are so many beautiful countries all over the world, France is just one among others, that's it. I do like Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary... Italy, Spain... Great places everywhere, just open your eyes and your mind... And, by the way, french girls are ok but for sure italian ones are hotter !
I'm French but not espacially proud nor ashamed. I really hate the pride for a nationality : for instance being proud of being French would mean that not being French would be a shame, which is ridiculous. I'm French because my culture originates from France, and that's it.
And in my mind it's very important not to forget that I'm French but also European.
Hello I am English and holiday In Quillan the south of france and the people here are really hospitable and humble.and have not been dragged into commercialism as in England dominated by "Big Business" taking away our freedom of choice. You still meet local business people running local businesses.Britain has lost that and it may be too late to regain it? But for me france is Charming!
Wow, it looks like someone's proud to be french here... I'm french as well, and France is also Vichy government, the collaboration with the nazis, slavery, the fact that women only vote here since 1946!! France's history is a joke really. And so was the Revolution... What did it bring? Napoleon!! A dictator!! And then a king again!
France is unique. unique for the beauty of the country with city like Paris, Marseille, Lyon. unique for the diveristy of the population. unqiue for her history. unique for her cuisine. french people are also unique with that sweet accent, their tastes. But i think we have to stop with all the cliché like cheese, wine, la baguette.
of course i'm proud to be french but i gotta say that today, french society is getting worst and worst...
I am not French but I am very interested in the history, culture and language of that country. I like reading about the Baroque period in France and I love the music of Marin Marais and Jean-Baptiste Lully. Style, taste and esprit: in my mind, these are the things that define France!
Say it loud I'm French and not proud.I speak to the people all around the world, there is the French image and the reality. The two things are totally different.
Hi, i'm french, and for me we are unique in the way we have to revolt ourselves. It brought us the 1789's revolution and the human rigths. More recently the revolt of the homeless people who were sleeping in tents (provided by associations) along the Seine. There is many other exemples but it would have been too long. The only thing is that in front of so many problems a big part of the population have stop struggling...
In France we can still buy our greens in grocers, our cheese in cheese-shops, wine in wine shops, meat in butchers', fish in fish-mongers'. We have open-air markets on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings. People queue outside the boulangeries on Sunday morning for fresh croissants, warm baguettes and an artwork gateau to take to their Sunday lunch invitation.
Hey guys, I'm french(sorry for mistaskes) and I know that lot of british or american people hate french bc they are "stupids" or stressfull or something like that and bc we eat frogs (yes we are the froggies) or snails, we drink wine everyday and we are not happy if wse don't eat a big baguette to start a good day ^^ Yes, foreigners think we are strange ! xD
But, in reallity, what do you hate or love in France, about french people.. ? Be cool please =)

Just like in the rest of Europe, you get used to alcohol gradually at every meal. And yet our teens don't behave like drunken frat rats let lose on Spring Break.
I am french, when you are 16 you can only buy or drink beer, but of course like everywhere people do not care at all about how old you are when they can get money.
Ms. Hala Gorani has a perfect French and American English accent. Flawless in both languages; gives envy to speak in both languages well.
