  • Great filming.

  • The bobby should have had the decency to hold the DMU at his distant signal so as not to spoil the shot!

  • Superb!

  • Excellent

  • Wow! Awesome pic! Thanks for sharing!

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The steam train is putting the DMU to shame. Love the sound as it climbs the hill.

  • @scotty21h Yep, and that's what we get these days. Isn't progress great - sacrifice character and interest for easy and functional and so unbelievably dull. If we were any good the new stuff would have all of them.

  • @scotty21h How??

  • I've got this very loco coming to Plymouth pulling the Cathedrals Express 02/07/11. There are quite a few steep gradients in the westcountry aswell. Especially the Devon banks !! It will certainly be giving it hell for leather there!! I notice she was kicking out quite a bit of steam in that vid. Do you recon that was just purely because it was working so hard or are the 8F's like that? Just i've yet to see an 8F. Quite looking forward to it!! Good recording, great vantage point!!

  • Lovely work, great sound. Eerily similar sound to our much more powerful and bigger wheeled NSW Australian 38 class, comments anyone ? Of course in Australia we don't call 1 in 100 a bank ... 1 in 75s are normal, 1 in 40s rate a mention

  • A pity about that DMU!

I bet there were a few people swearing as it spoilt a great shot.

  • Love your videos mate, this is a good one.

  • Fan bloody tastic!!!! Bet the driver of the 158 got a suprize!

  • @Nigel16032009 Bet he got a lesson on how railways should be!

  • Hey linesider I'm a bit late with my comments but this is such a wonderful video that I must congratulate you on your positioning and quality of photography! That loco is a little fighter and makes short work of a 12 coach train. Pretty spectacular. Great work!

  • Holy moly! Superb!

  • Cant beat a Black 8! Superb. Rosegrove shed RIP.

  • Congratulations on a fine piece of filming. I belong to the generation who stood in the snows up there wielding a super 8mm sound camera, the products of which now lie in piles of unseen reels - difficult and expensive to digitilise, and the resulting quality doesn't really justify the expense - but it is wonderful that today technology captures such superb images that we can all share. Thanks for posting.

  • @bolendoc Thank you very much. There must be some some really historic moments in your footage. There are so many runs from those times that I wish I could have captured; 46229 on its Blue Riband runs, 1000 and 5690 double heading... There is some super 8mm footage up on YouTube from acw71000 which is so valuable.

  • @Linesider1 Well, I travelled specially to see 46229 on its first public trip round the York, Leeds, Harrogate circuit in the days when there were two trips every Sunday. It was nursed out of York carefully, its cyclinder cocks blowing profusely - little did I know that we were to become used to that phenomenon - it was always a regular feature of that loco. I also two sequences of 1000 and 5690 double heading, which used to draw positive coments at railway club film shows. Maybe one day......

  • @Linesider1 - Do you remember the day Compound 1000 and 5690 Leander double-headed over the S&C? As far as I'm aware it was Saturday 12th. February 1983, my 12th. birthday and I damn well missed it. I'm sure my dad could've taken me to see it, it being my birthday! I have since seen many photos of though in the snow. ...and yes I am 40 next year!

  • one word - awesome

  • I was watching Marsden Rail 27 (the one about the S&C, great DVD btw) and it showed quite a few 8F's double heading freight trains. Would the 8F normally need double heading on the S&C up this part?

  • @theredraven Depends on what the 8F had to pull up there of course. There's the better part of 500 tons behind the drawbar of this one, & it doesn't look like it's struggling. A single engine should certainly handle 650 tons.

  • Superb piece of filming. Well done. A1+++++++++

  • Awesome video. I can practically smell the smoke just watching it. 5*

  • Well captured video

  • not a fan of steam videos usually but this is the best steam vid i've seen on youtube

  • what is the peak gradient here please?..awesome clip..the poor DMU looks very wimpy !

  • 1 in 100, which is the most severe gradient on the S&C. A route built with expresses in mind, even if the climbs did last for 15 miles.

  • thanks..some of our mainlines over the ranges here are 1 in 35 !

  • there was an idustrial line here in the uk with 1 in 17

  • thats wot i call power pulling at least 300 tonnes

  • 420 by my reckoning!

  • i bet that dmu driver was green with envy

  • Amazingly watchable.

  • Wow, that's some footage. I'm much more a fan of American steam, but this was really something, especiall without single slip on the way up, and the throttle wide open! 5/5

  • that was amazing!

  • As an ardent diesel fan I really must say that this video was little short of incredible! Thank you for posting

  • one of the best videos on youtube. fantastic

  • What A Sound!!!! I love these locos just because of the power... it immense!

  • This is great!

  • Very nice video!

  • Sweet sounds, excellent video. 5 stars

  • To gainsbourg66: I like the wide angle. I want to actually see the scene as in real life. It is zooming too close that is the mistake in my opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • Superb sound from such an extreme workhorse. You can't ask for anything more.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Jeff

  • Cracking bit of film of a great Loco. You are right up there with ACW71000 and Slatgrille as being one of the best filmers of UK steam on YouTube. Well done.

  • Magnificent!!!

  • Cause and Effect. I wish Richard Trevithik could have seen how his locomotive would have evolved into this fine beast. He was experimenting with 'strong steam' (high pressure) when he died in Dartford. Here we see strong steam at work, and no mistake! many thanks for posting. Favourited.

  • Cheers Steffan - indeed, the strength of the engine and steam more generally is exemplified no more so than on climbs like this.

  • This vid remined me of the last-but-one time I saw a steam locomotive at work in BR steam days propper. Our DMU was looped at Commins Coch (on the Cambrian in 1967). Through the cab windows we watched a 76XXX restart a long up goods train from beyond the loop. With a light following wind, the exhaust which towered vertically over the locomotive, was blown along at the same speed, until there was an awesome stack of clag, maybe 1/4 mile high. Against the evening sun it was unforgettable.

  • Very, very good video, would have loved to have been there!

  • Thank you. I was alone, which looking back seems bizzare!

  • Just stumbled across this piece and I've got to say this must be one of the best steam train videos on youtube - absolute classic stuff and that sound! Makes my spine tingle every time I watch it!

Watching the 158 on there - as a mainline driver I always give passing steamers a 'hello' toot just to get the whistled reply!

  • Thanks you - quite a noise she makes isn't it!

  • gives me goose bumps everytime I hear an 8f

  • I've just noticed that this carries straight on from "48151 on the Settle and Carlisle with "The Dalesman" 190807 From: sfaadaa", which you'll probably find in the 'related viedos' box. Quite neat, that.

(no, it's not a plug, I just thought it was neat.)

  • Simply awesome! 5* without a doubt

  • Credit goes to the Fireman for this outstanding effort! WELL DONE LAD 11/10

  • Great video, thanks for sharing it.

  • Thanks very much for the comments everyone - they're all greatly appreciated, even 12 months on from this epic spectacle.

  • thats has to be one of the best videos iv seen of a loco been worked how it should be worked i love it steam is king 5 stars

  • Blitzes is the word! Five stars all the way.

  • Thats fantastic, long live stanier

  • 5 stars from me too: great long shot, fab sound and shows just what the 8F can do on big valve.

  • A Classic.

  • I know you didn't imply this, but it's very symbolic of the contrast of time periods when the 158 and the 8F cross.

  • Supperb effort! I remember that loco at Dai Woodhams in Barry and look at it now.

This was shot from a good lineside location and caught the moment well.

  • I just love this footage of the 8F. Brilliant, as is the rest of your material.

I was about to subscribe to your videos when I received an e-mail saying you were subscribing to mine!! Thanks

  • Thanks very much. Aye we seem to have found each others videos at the same time - I'm enjoying your 80s/90s shots very much.

  • Excellent video! The sound and the picture are great aswell as the train. 5* + Favorite

  • Loved it ! five stars : )

  • This is a priceless piece of footage! 5* Well Done!

  • Wow. She had to work hard to get up there. Great tribute to British engineering. Stephen Lediard, Munich, Germany.

  • That's absolutely stunning, top marks to the driver aswell! Wonderful video, thanks for sharing :-)

  • He had that wide open for quite a while there - nicely done...

  • He had that wide open for quite a while there - nicely done...

  • Top video, Thanks for sharing :o)

Check out mine of 60009 on Ais Gill, not as good as yours, but a great sight none the less !!!

    Ols :o)

  • Really good video. Good to see the other train going by.

  • awesome video

  • this really is a brilliant video, captured the essence of what the s and c is all about, shows the 1 in 100 gradient superbly

    alan sattenstall+

  • Thank you very much Alan (and everyone else for the continued kind comments).

  • An awesome video, 5 out of 5.

  • Cause and Effect! Wonderful!

I can only recall seeing an 8F once, shunting somewhere on a weed-strewn quarry branch in NE Wales about 1964. Goodness knows where it was. If anyone can hazard a guess as to the location, that would be great. The locomotive seemed waist-deep in parched vegetation.

  • Really lovely vid, and the comparison between working steam and that little farty thing going the other way. Which is much more efficient of course, but who cares right now.

  • What a beautiful noise

  • Really good video mate

  • Exciting video. What speed was it going?

  • Thank you. I'm not sure what speed, I'm guessing about 35 at best?

  • Very nice shot - stirring stuff - taken on my 72nd birthday! Thanks so much.

  • You're welcome - hope you had a good birthday!

  • Powerful

  • Brilliant! BTW, I've got some 8F parts off 48364 if anyone wants to buy them.

  • Awesome...black 8 power. Wish trains would pull in stations like this again

    Thanks for posting

  • great!

  • Wonderful, just wonderful.

    Thanks for posting

    Tom

  • Another 5 star video....

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Brilliant, pitty about the 158!

  • This just shows you the true power of steam. Great shot!!!

  • Usual cracking shot David.

  • Top Gun mate!!!! loverly shot. What camera do you use?

  • Ta very much. I'll PM you details of my camera...

  • Great video. 48151 seemed to be storming up the bank and risk breaking her 50mph speed limit.

  • Yeah, although I think she was only doing 30 as there is a 30mph slack over the top at the moment. I think the 2 cylinder beat makes it sound faster than other engines at this speed.

  • Its not so much the 2-cylinder beat as the small driving wheels. You've got 4 beats per revolution on 4'8 1/2'' wheels there, as opposed to, say, 4 beats per revolution on a 6' driving-wheeled Black Five. That's an absolutely cracking shot you've got there nonetheless!

  • Ah right - I've never fully understood these steam loco's! Thanks for enlightening me.

  • Wish I'd been there! Wensleydale tomorrow if I don't chicken out!

  • I didn't even turn out when it came to Lincoln - must be old age?

  • Haha, I don't know, if we all knew how loco's would perform beforehand, it'd be a lot easier to decide what to go and see!

  • YARRRR likeing this loco working hard GREAT STUFF AND WHAT A SOUND

    5 STARS

  • Cheers - that's all thanks to a brilliant crew and a gentle northerly wind.

  • What a joy to see and hear an engine working so energetically. Filmed with your usual skill. Thanks for sharing - Chris
