This is what is termed a "dark moment" in storytelling.

It's used to build tension and then release it.

It show us that Willy is not the sugar-coated candy-character that he pretends to be.

He can be a bit devilish at times.

That is why this boat is the ride that takes everyone into the invention room. It symbolizes the "journey" one must make inorder to create somehing. You must make the abstract (your thoughts/ideas) into concreate objects (such as candy bars and gobbestoppers.) His whole factory is a metaphor for this as each child leaves due to their inability to understand his inventions and suffers because of their desire to selfishly manipulate them.

I like the idea/history of Willie Wonka so I'm going to take a stab at this.Remember when the Charlie in the Johnny Depp version mentioned that "Candies not supposed to have a point." So Wonka here is showing his audience the concepts that run through his mind inorder to conceptualize Wonka Candy. It will not make sense to normal people because he does not make normal candy. His candy is BEYOND comprehension, reason or logic like his images.

There is a number of stories you would hear if you watched the films documentary on the dvd or listen to the commentary.

The Oompa Loompa driving the boat is not really driving the boat he thought he was but it really is on a track.

If you watch the making of the film on the dvd, the director Mel Stuart said the film was not intended for children it was made for adults because of the adult comedy. Like the piano solo he plays to enter the chocolate room mrs tevee says it is rochmononoff no it's Mozart
