This scene represents life. It's starts out beautiful, safe, serene, but then you are exposed to a world of trouble, woes, temptations, fears and you have to decide if you are going to push ahead or turn back. If you turn back you may not end up where you started, but if you push ahead you come out on the other side; a little wiser with a new perspective and if your lucky Thankful!
is this edited? i seem to remember seeing something along the lines of wilder turning into something that looks like jabba the hut (by way of cut scene)and one of the kids really freaks out screams and faints.
@tinykicksass Coolness possibly getting it confused with something else that was equally screwed up (but oddly still permitted) on TV when I was a kid.
This Wonka is my personal hero. I've already confused a pair of Jehova's Witnesses into confusion, but this is the big league of messing with people. :-D
There is no earthly way of knowing. In which direction we are going. There is no knowing where we're rowing. Or which way the river's flowing. Is it raining? Is it snowing? Is a hurricane-a-blowing?
This movie is listed as #47 on the Top 50 Scariest Horror Movies of All Time list because of this scene along w/ the Oompa Loompas, the family-friendly ending & the whimscal sets. XD
That is why this boat is the ride that takes everyone into the invention room. It symbolizes the "journey" one must make inorder to create somehing. You must make the abstract (your thoughts/ideas) into concreate objects (such as candy bars and gobbestoppers.) His whole factory is a metaphor for this as each child leaves due to their inability to understand his inventions and suffers because of their desire to selfishly manipulate them.
@GurlPrincess :-O Wow... I realize that that's just a theory, but... it actually makes sense. Only one little problem though. If this is the true explanation, then why isn't it explained better in the film?
@GurlPrincess I think there's been different DVD releases of it, but the one I have has a behind the scenes featurette, a feature-length audio commentary with Wonka and the kids, and a making of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory video.
@tinykicksass well, if you have to be explained everything to do with a film, then it would just be boring. I mean, you have to open your mind to these types of things, otherwise you are harboring a lot of irony in your question. With inability to understand Gurl Princess' explanation. Oddly, GurlPrincess is not a youtube name I would expect to be on that side of the spectrum of thought. You should never state your moral in a story.
I like the idea/history of Willie Wonka so I'm going to take a stab at this.Remember when the Charlie in the Johnny Depp version mentioned that "Candies not supposed to have a point." So Wonka here is showing his audience the concepts that run through his mind inorder to conceptualize Wonka Candy. It will not make sense to normal people because he does not make normal candy. His candy is BEYOND comprehension, reason or logic like his images.
The whole scene was ad-libbed by Gene Wilder. They just kept the cameras running on him. The faces the children have on their faces are them actually thinking he's gone crazy.
Does anybody know the ACTUAL, not spectulated, theorized, or opinion, reason that this scene was added into the film?! Did they just do it so everyone would go ಠ_ಠ, or was there a reason?!
@mademan912 I've given it much thought... and I haven't been able to find one. Was hoping that by posting this clip on YouTube that someone could give me an explanation.
@tinykicksass Well it's only been up since January of this year so, I'm sure you and I both will find an answer eventually! ^_^ For now I'll just sit here in ಠ_ಠ-mazement!
@tinykicksass I have your reason. Look for the song "Through the Loop" by Pendulum. They made it to inspire the song. =P (I don't really believe this, but I'd certainly like to think so!)
This is my favorite scene in a kids movie ever. I remember being 7 and thinking, wow that guy has issues XD I was always unhappy when it was cut out of the tv versions though D: it's just so awesome!
Another example is the golden goose scene. Wonka says I know what you're thinking, they can't be doing what you think they're doing. I haven't met the oompa loompa who can't do it. No kid would ever understand that, their parents would chuckle and they would ask what's funny?
If you watch the making of the film on the dvd, the director Mel Stuart said the film was not intended for children it was made for adults because of the adult comedy. Like the piano solo he plays to enter the chocolate room mrs tevee says it is rochmononoff no it's Mozart
@Russell364 not much substance in your answer....They are going for a trip on Amanita Muscaria mushrooms, thats all...You can see a huge one right at the start of the scene ,and several others just before they enter the tunnel(red cap with white spores)...consuming them can cause nausea, sweating, hallucinations, and profound terror, especially to those with limited spiritual awareness such as most of the greedy fools on the boat..

This is what is termed a "dark moment" in storytelling.
It's used to build tension and then release it.
It show us that Willy is not the sugar-coated candy-character that he pretends to be.
He can be a bit devilish at times.

There is a number of stories you would hear if you watched the films documentary on the dvd or listen to the commentary.
The Oompa Loompa driving the boat is not really driving the boat he thought he was but it really is on a track.
Russell364 1 year ago
To answer your question @tinykicksass
If you watch the making of the film on the dvd, the director Mel Stuart said the film was not intended for children it was made for adults because of the adult comedy. Like the piano solo he plays to enter the chocolate room mrs tevee says it is rochmononoff no it's Mozart
Russell364 1 year ago
@Russell364 I guess we both have different DVD versions, because on mine there's a documentary that says the film was made for both kids and adults.
