Not being nasty... But Americans really can't sing English songs. For a start, it's 'No-one can lift the "DAMN" thing' not dang... Transcendental sounds weird with an american accent... Seeing as how the song was written by Stephin Merritt, I'd hardly call it an "English" song. Seriously, you're basing the quality of a cover, off of a cover.

I do like the version, but I'm reminded of how Low covered "I Love" by Tom T Hall and wouldn't sing the lines about coffee or grass, being Mormons and all. Now, why bother covering it, and, also, why is it that people assume the singer is identical to the narrator of the song? I do think one should sing 'damn' when the word is damn, but it's still a nice version.

I cover this song too, but I've never heard Peter Gabriel's version. Check the original for timing, notes and accent! Sadly, this glib version destroys Merritt's intuitive musical brilliance.

Anecdotally, I played this at a lapdancer's 21st birthday party recently and inserted the word 'pole' in the line '..instructions for (pole) dancing'. She shut us down screaming 'I want my party to stay funky', then put another dance mix CD into the TV (her idea of party hi-fi).
