I think the Mustang had the misfortune to be placed alongside the iconic Spitfire, which seems to get all the credit, despite the fact the Mustang was the backbone of the BOB. I like to think if it could talk, tho', it would say it was just happy to be on the winning side. Just like in football, I suppose - some players get the headlines, while others are happy to contribute to the success.

@bobsurgranny This was a case of standing exactly in the right spot and the right moment, normally the whistle is subtle, but this was ear splittingly loud, in a enjoyable kinda way.

Whistle caused by wind blowing over the gun ports on the wing, not the engine, fantastic!

@liambloemendaal Thanks, after a few trips to a yearly airshow I get to see the best spots to watch the action, sometimes its just down to luck, like when I filmed the 16 spitfires flying together at Duxford, I was standing in the overflow carpark, which just happened to be the best spot to see the flyby. Bovington a few years ago was great, but the health and safety folks have made it difficult to get close to the tanks now.

@DBDMotorsports Many believe it is the air in the gun ports rather than any engine component. It may also be caused by air in the intakes.

Für mich war die P-51 der beste kämpfer des zweiten weltkriegs... Aber die frage ist: Was würde der Mustang ohne die Merlin-motor gewesen sein ? Es war ein glück, dass dieses kraftwerk bereit gewesen war, zum richtigen zeitpunkt... Andernfalls würde, was zeit benötigt, um ein Allison-motor so gut wie früher zu entwickeln ? In der zwischenzeit wäre als die verluste der B-17 und B-24s in Deutschland betragen haben ? Ho, ho, hooo !

@bompiberlot Die P-51 hatte schreckliche performace mit dem Allison. Und die USA hatten keine Motoren in der Entwicklung, die passen würden, dass alle gut waren. Die größte Sache der USA tat, war eine der Merlin, die wirklich imporved seiner Höhenlage Leistung, also eine Legende war geboren supercharge hinzufügen!
