@kapry67 you're right. They're not Talking Heads, they're not New Order, they not the Killers and they're not the Smashing Pumpkins. They're Arcade Fire, and to me that's all that matters because I love them.
This song always makes me so sad, because it reminds me of my brother. He's the younger middle child out of a family of four, and nobody likes him. All he does is try to start fights and freak out. Being to oldest of four I'm suppost to be there and look out for him, but he's to much to handle so I also ignore him. It makes me sad to see him miss me when I go away while I celebrate when ever he's gone. I love him, but I just can't show it. The rest of my siblings flat out hate him..
So, I've always been curious about the "older brother, bit by a vampire, for a year we caught his tears in a cup" section. I know that the EP had a vampire based song so I suppose it's not new ground for the band. I was just wonderin if someone had some insight. Great Song. Great Band
@zTrounce Dude. If you don't like this music, then don't come to this page to hate. Look. I don't go out on to pages for Lady Gaga and Rebecca Black to comment with really shitty rants. Take Justin Beiber too. I don't want him here. I just want Arcade Fire here... and nothing else. Have a nice day Sir Troll :D
This song rocks! Can't wait to see them at Bonnaroo this year! Check out Buffalo Culture with our Janglin cover from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes!
What I saw was that Alexander 'set out for a great adventure,' ad joined the military 'for the neighborhood,' for the country. He returned mentally ill, 'bitten by a vampire,'and committed suicide. Previous to his joining up, the father and Alex didn't agree, and Alexander often started fights and was troubled, so the father pressured Alexander into going off to war. He went off to war knowing that he would never be the same again, hence the title of the song.
Alexander Kerensky was Lenin's older brother, who tried to lead a revolution against the USSR. "Set out for a great adventure" refers to him being sent into exile, the "if you want something..." part refers to the Marxist ideology of "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need", but I don't really understand the vampire part.
@Dysphomia Fail, it was Aleksandr Ilyich Ulyanov that was Lenin's older brother.. and he fucking died which made Lenin far more radical. Kerensky lead the provisional goverment after the czar abdicated, then Lenin and his bros started Red October later that year.
Laika was the first canine cosmonaut. She was sent into space with no hope or means of bringing her back. The song is narrated by the younger siblings of Alexander, who causes fights in the family, until his parents send him away. The kids were told that him leaving was, "for his own good," but it's really for the convenience of the people around him, the neighbourhood. The kids discover this, and now say if the parents knew Alex wouldn't return, they should have named him Laika.
@sparkytrick everything about this text resounds excellence, including the title of the descriptor, fucking A - this is the kind of thing upon which inspiration is born
When this album came out I listened to this song over, and over, and over... I think what catches me the most is when the female vocalist comes in at the final chorus, it's so powerful!
I think its about a very close friend who left his family and went downhill from there. I say this because being "bit by a vampire" is often used in reference to trying heroin and becoming addicted, like when you're bit by a vampire you become a vampire forever you become an addict forever (most likely) when you try heroin.
I don't think its the Alaskan kid that died, the band made this album after several deaths of close friends to the band so it was probably about one of their friends.
We had a dog named Laika. My dad named her after the Russian dog Laika, the first animal in space. She's gone now and I miss her, which is why I listen to this song :(
@pigglypoof That's why you should learn how to train a dog before getting one. Barking is an amazingly easy problem to fix if you bother to take the time and are a responsible pet owner.
@vielbosheit agreed, but i was a naive child, my cousin named our dog laika and i didn't even know what it meant until much later and now that i hear this song it reminds me of her so much
@pigglypoof Not to say anything bad about your dad, but you don't do that, you don't get rid of your dog just because your neighbours think that the loud dog next door reduces their property value. You say fuck off to the neghbours, because no proper neighbour would dare ask another person to get rid of their dog.
This song is actually about a film called "Into the Wild"...its about the man who went to alaska, on an adventure to get away from society. The guy's name is Alexander.
I love the way regine sings at 2:00 through 2:15 ....Arcade sure does have quite a nack for building their songs up to an amazing climax now dont they....

Laika was the first living thing to survive the trip into orbit. The space poochie. Unfortunately, she never came home. I believe Laika means 'barker' or something of the like.
In America dog launches you into space.

Laika was the first living thing to survive the trip into orbit. The space poochie. Unfortunately, she never came home. I believe Laika means 'barker' or something of the like.
