This song always makes me so sad, because it reminds me of my brother. He's the younger middle child out of a family of four, and nobody likes him. All he does is try to start fights and freak out. What I saw was that Alexander 'set out for a great adventure,' ad joined the military 'for the neighborhood,' for the country. He returned mentally ill, 'bitten by a vampire,'and committed suicide. Previous to his joining up, the father and Alex didn't agree, and Alexander often started fights and was troubled, so the father pressured Alexander into going off to war. He went off to war knowing that he would never be the same again, hence the title of the song.

Alexander Kerensky was Lenin's older brother, who tried to lead a revolution against the USSR. "Set out for a great adventure" refers to him being sent into exile, the "if you want something..." part refers to the Marxist ideology of "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need", but I don't really understand the vampire part.

The kids discover this, and now say if the parents knew Alex wouldn't return, they should have named him Laika.

When this album came out I listened to this song over, and over, and over... I think what catches me the most is when the female vocalist comes in at the final chorus, it's so powerful!

I think its about a very close friend who left his family and went downhill from there. I say this because being "bit by a vampire" is often used in reference to trying heroin and becoming addicted, like when you're bit by a vampire you become a vampire forever you become an addict forever (most likely) when you try heroin.

I don't think its the Alaskan kid that died, the band made this album after several deaths of close friends to the band so it was probably about one of their friends.

I'm pretty sure a big part of this song is having to do with Christopher McCandless, the focus of the book and movie Into the Wild. He renamed himself Alexander Supertramp, left his family, and did a bunch more of the stuff talked about, along with dying in the wilderness and never coming back, much like Laika.
