  • FYI: Madison County originally boasted 19 covered bridges, but just six remain today, all of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bridges were covered by order of the County Board of Supervisors to help preserve the large flooring timbers, which were more expensive to replace than the lumber used to cover the bridge sides and roof. Usually, the bridges were named for the resident who lived closest.

  • Why are the Madison County bridges covered?

  • great vid--been there myself about 5 times !

  • i was here a few years ago. (ciao Kristi ciao Lauren)

it is a beautiful place, the landscape, the bridges, the pretty town of Winterset, the house were they filmed the movie with Eastwood and M. Streep..

just as beautiful as my town; Cellatica, Italy

  • i have exam about this bridges, im from Norway and have never heard of them before ;o

  • I live in Iowa and we just visited all 6 bridges just last week. You did a great photo (film) shoot on the bridges. How did you escape the graffitti on the walls? Only thing is your coment is that the little city in Madison county is called Winterset, not summerset. Winterset Iowa is where John Wayne (Marion Robert Morrison) was born in 1907.

  • @RathbunDan It was also were Leslie John (Crazy Jack) Anderson was born in 1932. That was my father.

  • wow i would of loved to visi there were they filmed the bridges of madisons county

  • Thanks for your interest in the Covered Bridges video. Yes it is a very beautiful place to visit and I am certain living there would be grand. Please check back to our site from time to time, as we are preparing to create additional short videos of places of interest to visit in the midwest.

    Sincerely,

    Sapphire Canyon Productions.
