@UKKieran The monarchy system we have today is the best ever coz we've discarded the undemocratic aspects of monarchy i.e the absolute rule of the monarch, and we have kept the great aspects of the monarchy i.e the history, the culture, the huge income from tourists who come to see the monarchy, the unifying effect that it has on Britain. Also the monarchy is a great advert for Britain as seen with the global popularity and interest in the royal weddings. Monarchy Rules! excuse the pun ; )

The royal wedding has been one of the biggest stories throughout the world for the past 3 months, the most interest has been from the USA, FACT! it looks like you dont know this either, but the royals bring in far more tourism and interest into Britain than they cost the tax payer. Thats not the point. That is a very single-minded view of the British Monarchy. The Monarchy are a huge chunk of British history. From the Ancient British Queen Boudicca, to the present Queen Elizabeth II. Boudicca defeated and drove out the Romans, Richard the Lionheart was the only king to retake Jerusalem for the Christians, Henry V had victories at Agincourt and Crecy. Henry VIII created the Royal Navy, Elizabeth ! defeated the Spanish Armada... (read next comment...)

Without the British Royal Family, you effectivley wipe out half of Britains history. That is why it would be a travesty if the monarchy was lost. They are a vital part of British History, values and tradition. hey have saved this country from invasion, and brought it into countless renaissances. Money dosent come into the equation.

Nigel is spot on, the monarchy brings in huge income for Britain and adds to our rich culture and history. I dont like the idea of some sweaty old politician being placed in the possiton of a king without having had the life's training in behaving like a king. Sarkozy is a perfect example, constantly throwing his toy out of the pram if he doesnt get his way.

She's also Commander in Chief, if I'm not mistaken.

Point stands; UKIP very much mirrors American libertarians and, not surprisingly, they're just as hypocritical. They champion for the common man and complain about taxes but I guess as long as the tax payers are paying for royal weddings, it's ok.

The Queen has a number of legal personalities; she's part of the legislative, the executive, the judiciary and this makes her unable to act in any particular way because a decision would bind across all legal powers. But as a unifying figure, as a cultural draw and as head of the church and armed forces, I don't think she's useless at all.
