But I think you'll agree that's not necessarily an argument for public provision (in fact it can be made worse because then, as a taxpayer, people's life choices can have an affect on us via the effect on their health).
I think what must be a greater problem is the moral hazard in health insurance. People who are more likely to be ill are more likely to sign up to private health insurance, and their claims will drive up the cost while people less likely to be ill won't insure and thus can't bring premiums down.

That is very true. There are millions of Americans who can afford to buy insurance that chose not to. I am one of them. I have found that when you visit any doctor and have cash on hand, they give great deals because they do not have to fight with insurance companies. In Maine you can't get pain meds unless you have an MRI that is so bad an elected official in Augusta can see the problem and say "yes you are allowed pain meds" Hey-we have socialized medicine up here and it ain't pretty-and I PAY for my heathcare! The politicians make the decisions-even on your meds (you can only get generic)-not the doc-so if you want Obamacare move to Maine. It sucks up here.

Medicare is not sustainable as it stands with no changes & will be cutting payments to health care providers about 20% in 2010 and another 20% soon thereafter. Therefore, imagine if another few million people are put onto the rolls + all the people who shall be coming of age for that program in the next few years. Who do you think will pay for it? What would happen is rationed care.

No Obamacare! I'd like to see a doctor quicker than within 6 months of becoming ill. Look at the French model; only a tiny percentage of people who call for ambulances get one; an MD decides over the phone if your complaints warrant an ambulance..

And even then there will be huge sections of the populace who STILL will not want to address the problem. This coming from someone who will always have the VERY BEST in health care,courtesy of us, the ones he wants to take an asprin and don't call me(the Gov"t) in the morning. The Government IS the reason why our medical costs are skyrocketing as it is. The Gov"t mandates the prices that are on your medical bills, especially if it is being paid by an insurance company. The Gov't is the reason why an asprin,for God' sake, costs $8.00 if you receive it at a hospital.

Fuck the Gov't Health Care. I was hit by a car,and paid for EVERYTHING out of my pocket(no, insurance, my choice). In dealing with the Docs,I indicated that I am paying cash out of my pocketand asked if they can cut me a price break. said no, that their prices are based on what the Gov't mandates, and if they did give me a break, the Gov't would impose sanctions(wtf??)on them,etc. There is a Gov't circular that codifies EVERY medical procedure & what will be charged & God help you if you don't
