In the 1930s recumbent riders won the tour de France, after that they banned recumbents from racing in the bike races. Recumbent bicycles ARE faster then uprights except uphills.
I like the idea of a recumbent. I have to admit though, those speeds you quote are pretty much the same as I would achieve on my Specialized road bike (assuming this was generally all downhill), but I guess the thrills is being so much closer to the road like a racing car. I like the idea of having a lower centre of gravity.
Nice ride on a nice but--BUT-----how is a 'bent on a 5 mile climb? or riding through downtown Boston or Chicago??? Also, for touring, where do you put all your stuff??? "Bents have a place, especially if you're handicapped, or ride on safe roads. For real touring or commuting, I'll stick with the old Raleigh Comp or Waterford 1900.
@mrmott44 Climbing on a 'bent? Depends on the bike and "the engine", but forget all that nonsense about how they "can't climb".
I've never ridden in a USA-ian city, but I've used a recumbents (including a trike) in London with no problems.
Where do you put all your stuff??? Depends on the recumbent, something like an HPVelotechnik Streetmachine will take 4 panniers, how much stuff are you planning on taking?
Why is this video suppose to be so impressive? I can go just as fast on my 20" BMX, you are going downhill! I also own a 1988 20" Hutch HPV designed by Dan Hanebrink that was made for downhill racing, it will do speeds up to 45mph.
I ride a bent here in the US but haven't gotten this speed. Seems to me the fact that you have lots of straightaways and no traffic stops is a huge factor. Also, bents pick up speed in steep turns because they aren't as top heavy.
Where was this filmed?
I couldn't tell if you shifted out of your big ring.
In the US, drivers go apesh*t if you pass them. they also honk like crazy when they share the road. are the laws different?
It looks like France or Spain. In Europe it's usually permitted to share the road with cars and fortunately most of the car drivers stay calm. The level of aggression when being overtaken depends on the region where you cycle ;-)
'bents have a lower center of gravity--in a steep turn, you're not fighting against falling down the way you would be on a road bike. I've made sharp turns much faster on my 'bent than I ever would've on a conventional bike. It might be more about attitude-- I just don't think I'm as prone to falling over in a turn when I'm on my recumbent. 'top heavy' may be the wrong way to express that.
Had the diamond framers known they were "racing" I'm sure you would have still won. But you have to admit your pass speeds are a little exaggerated. And beyond that ... you don't call out your passes.
It looks to me like all the upright riders that were going downhill were just taking it easy. Were any even in the drops? I'm going to have to give this a lower rating for the misleading video title.
At 23:14, aren't you suppose to stop for pedestrians??

I have a Tadpole Recumbent and it is slower on the uphills than a traditional bicycle. Still a lot of fun though and good because I now have MS.
whitejellyfungus 1 year ago
What I said goes for recumbent bicycles (2 wheels) I am not sure if the same apples for recumbent tricycles.
The reason recumbents are faster down hills, and on the flat (given similar weight), is the lower areodynamic drag of recumbents Vs uprights.

It's exiting for enthusiasts who want attain a higher average speed under their own power when touring. BMX bikes don't fit that design brief.
wildblue2 2 years ago
...and a unstreamlined average recumbent downhill will do speeds easily over 60, often 70, sometimes 80 and difficultly 90

I agree. It looks like the south of France. I would say it was filmed a Sunday morning because there are lots of cyclists on the road.

It's the mother of a downhill, that's why he's going so fast.
"Also, bents pick up speed in steep turns because they aren't as top heavy"
I'm not sure what you're trying to say, but it sounds like mumbojumbo.

'bents have a lower center of gravity--in a steep turn, you're not fighting against falling down the way you would be on a road bike. I think it's a mind thing too, somehow it's easier and less scary at high angles of lean on a bent.
lsmike 2 years ago
Pardon my language but, Fuck me that's fast!
Hvitiris 3 years ago 2
It certainly is! Recumbents are awesome on the flats and downhills. Going the other way wouldn't be quite as quick, mind.
lsmike 2 years ago
True, although on my Highracer I have found it not significantly slower uphills than my upright, not sure what climbing on a Lowracer is like though.
