A couple of mildly hot songs do not the "greatest band about in the 80s" make. Both U2 and Duran Duran had many more hits, and were more creative musically.
I was born in 1980, shame I missed all these sort of bands! The lead singer looks like the guy from a-ha, except better and hes got that lovely scottish accent.
It was a great time for music. I remember the first time I heard Big Country on the radio, when I was 13 back in 1983. My mother was changing the channel on the radio in the car and I heard just a few notes of "In a Big Country". I asked her to turn the "dial" back to that song and it was like magic to my ears. I have been a huge fan of Big Country for 26 years since.
I am English mate. Married to a Scot, and love her to death. Love BC, and have for 25 years. But, most of them were born in England. Hey, Scots or English, still the best band EVER.
That's the coolest song ever!!! If only the ultra ferocious Highland clans could hear that powerful and mesmerizing tune before and during the fateful Battle of Culloden back in 1746 maybe, other than English, Half the Planet might be speaking Gaelic instead in 2009. One can only wonder!!! Taylor Ahern, Squantum Mass.
Big Country's fans know otherwise. The shallow. ignorant wankers that blow them off as a "one hit wonder" are probably a bunch of MTV interns with more zits than brain cells.
haha, I feel the same way about a-ha. Most people in America think of a-ha as that "Take on Me" group. They're still making music now, have about 8 albums out, and at least two of the band members have put out solo albums. They actually got better as they went along, but they're still only known for one song.
In a day and age when singers only allegiance is to wherever thay are playing that night, it is refreshingly odd to see a band so proud to be Scottish.
to anybody who does not know stuart was in a band called the skids before bc with a guy called richard jobson. a lot more punk orientated but great all the same. rip stuart missed by all who cared and that is many !
I know what you're saying, pal. I'm from the midwestern US, and I don't know if I've ever heard anything so evocative in my life. It's like their music makes me miss a place I've never known.
Possibly the finest song ever written! inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn how to play. I'll be forever grateful to the best live band I've ever seen! timeless genius!
God bless him and may his soul rest in Heaven for eternity. He gave us so much in such a short time. He is loved and missed. Thinking about it brings a tear to my eye.
BC & The Alarm I guess. Well, back in '75 When the kid was on the line And he felt no pain 'Cause there was none He would bend in the wind Take in anything Like sniffin' roses And it was alright Until he fell And cut his hand He just could not understand He'd run away Blame pretense For defence Or plain innocence
Saw them four times in the 90's - Fabulous sets - each time a great sense of occaison. Tight sets with amazing guitar sound strong drums and NEVER a missed note from Stuart.
still seems so fresh - will never stop listening to the greatest unrecognised talent that Scotland has ever produced.RIP Stuart you were the greatest.

I joined the BRITISH ARMY (ROYAL ENGINEERS) in 1983. Me and My mates (TOP MEN) listened to BIG COUNTRY non stop throughout our basic training and onwards. I always get choked up when I hear any of BIG COUNTRIES songs. They were without doubt the single most thing that got me (and my friends) through the shite and horrible time in my life. I owe them "BIG STYLE". I cannot to this day listen to a BIG COUNTRY SONG and not remember something from those days gone by.

BIG COUNTRY didnt make it big in the USA cause those frustrated artist cunt/tossers who couldnt play a note picked up a pen/laptop and and just let BC have it... samething happened to the JAM. anything pro anglosaxon sounding got the once over from the american fascist bullocks machine!
I was a teenager at the time, living here in the United States, so I may not remember things very well, but they seemed to be fairly popular, at least among my friends and social group. Hopefully we weren't the c*nt/loosers (I corrected your spelling error) you were talking about.

Being a sensitive and sincere individual it must have really taken its toll on the man. I must say that BIG COUNTRY was there for me in a time when nothing else was save God. When I heard of the news I wept bitterly.
How did U2 get bigger than Big Country? fucked if I know, I'm Irish and I think U2 are crap. Probably they were prepared to sell out and talk lots of bullshit to the right people.
YESSSSSSSSSS wotta f king classic band from the 80's .. An still I crank em through my subs ! Cheers for postin an bringing back memories bands like this will NEVER be seen again ! R.I.P Stuart !
Why talk politics when we can just enjoy the classic works of Big Country....and miss Stewart Adamson....what a waste...if only a few of us knew what was going on in his heart and mind at the time...he is sooooo missed...
Let me set the record striaght...William Wallace, Rob Roy, excellent men from a great country, Scotland! I love BG. Don't trash the USA though. It's easy from behind a computer terminal. Blood for oil, come on, my gas prices haven't dropped from captured Iraqi oil. Extreme Islam is our common enemy. Heads cut off, mistreatment of women, anti-semites, sharia law, there is a real threat, who stands up to fight against it is the question. Hate America all you want but we're doing it.
You'd probably find that other countries would leave you alone if you didn't provke them so much or simply invade and then occupy them for unjustifiable reasons. You're quite safe in the US, especially with the number of weapons and military personnel you have at your disposal, though admittedly you're a bit overstretched at the moment.
fms324 - There were no Islamic extremists in Iraq before the invasion, Saddam (that former friend of the US) had them all locked up, killed and tortured. As for the oil, gads1234 is right, funny how the US troops headed straight for the oil ministry to protect it when the country was falling apart!
Your ranting on the threat islam is to the U.S. is just not true. Lets have it the other way around.Death penalty, abusing women is also common in the U.S,anti-islamism,a reborn president on a new crusade. But not a single country on this planet threatens the U.S.A with an invasion attempt.Oh yes, i must have forgotten you have the greatest and strongest military there is. But it was never put to a real test. Was it ?
"Never" put to a real test? Do they still teach history in school? Germany gave us and plenty of other countries a hell of a test...that's to your credit. The rest you're pretty much right on.
after the fall of the Soviet Union, Europe diverged onto a secularized, leisured, socialist, and pacifist path, where in the pride and arrogance of the Enlightenment you were convinced you could make heaven on earth — and would demonize as retrograde anyone who begged to differ. soon the bill comes due as you age, face a demographic crisis, become imprisoned by secular appetites and ever growing entitlements. Once one insists on an equality of result, not one of mere opportunity, the end is near
I have nothing against Americans, I've met lots of very nice Americans but it looks to me as though the American government has become a whipping boy for Israel.
u got to remember there is real history and the american version of history 2 different sides of the same story. they cant even tell u where europe is on a map how they gonna get here to save us all, ah forgot they saved the world from iraq and afganistan youd think they would do somthing about zimbabwe, ah shit forgot no OIL there.
Mmmm partly true. I don't think I'd have used "followed" to describe that but I'm sure someone made a buck there on someone else's misfortune. Thank goodness that doesn't happen any more! I was talking about the 2 wars being Iraq and Afghanistan as gads1234 mentioned. I can't find Afghanistan...but I can spell it.
Actually, what happened was that after WW1 there were people in our country called the isolationists who saw what was the beginning of WW2 (Germany initially taking over Europe) strictly as a European conflict. Roosevelt created the lend lease program" as a away help our allies without really being involved. This situation was keen until japan bombed us. Then of course we had to step in and save the world AGAIN! If it weren't for my country the world would be speaking german right now.
USA, UK folks, Scotland has a deep layer of history. BC gives some of that history within music. Let's please not dishonour Stuarts memory and eachother with discord here. Let us instead discover more within that music :)
Rathardican, thank you for the information, my interpretation of the lyrics seems to be off in this case. I see Scots still rally for a fight as well as a friend- cheers.
Can we talk about the bagpipes? Awesome. Did any other band incorporate bagpipes into their desire to Rock?

This should have been a big hit for Big Country. Didn't get played on the radio stations here in America though.
The audio for this vid has a metallic sound, but thanks for posting it!

Why talk politics when we can just enjoy the classic works of Big Country....and miss Stewart Adamson....what a waste...if only a few of us knew what was going on in his heart and mind at the time...he is sooooo missed...
ikaruthenobody 3 years ago
We ALL knew what was going on with Stewart - just listen... It's ALL in his/their music. God rest his soul. He lives on in all of us.

You're quite safe in the US, especially with the number of weapons and military personnel you have at your disposal, though admittedly you're a bit overstretched at the moment.
newmark401 3 years ago
fms324 - There were no Islamic extremists in Iraq before the invasion, Saddam (that former friend of the US) had them all locked up, killed and tortured.

Was it ?
KtBdOKW 3 years ago

I have nothing against Americans, I've met lots of very nice Americans but it looks to me as though the American government has become a whipping boy for Israel.

u got to remember there is real history and the american version of history 2 different sides of the same story. they cant even tell u where europe is on a map how they gonna get here to save us all, ah forgot they saved the world from iraq and afganistan youd think they would do somthing about zimbabwe, ah shit forgot no OIL there.
gads1234 3 years ago
sure...we are idiots...but what do you call someone who follows the idiots into these 2 wars? Welcome aboard.
mesillamaan 3 years ago
Actually, you followed the UK into WWII. After your country ahd profiteered from it.
Scotsgit 3 years ago
Mmmm partly true. I don't think I'd have used "followed" to describe that but I'm sure someone made a buck there on someone else's misfortune. Thank goodness that doesn't happen any more! I was talking about the 2 wars being Iraq and Afghanistan as gads1234 mentioned. I can't find Afghanistan...but I can spell it.
mesillamaan 3 years ago
