I'm a girl who, for years, avoided Pride and Prejudice like the plague because I thought it was just a stupid, "girly", romance novel.
But I finally got around to reading it recently and realized that Pride and Prejudice is actually a great book that has been hideously misrepresented by Hollywood in order to market it to a wider female audience (kind of like Jane Eyre). The Keira Knightly version retains virtually none of Austin's wit and humor and intelligence!
As a man, I was never a great fan of romantic literature, but I love P & P. The language, the dialogue, the characters and the plot are all nearly perfect. I like Darcy's aloofness and arrogance. He is not interested in silly socializing or pompous behavior. He is, above all a man of principle, honor and hard work. The masculine values Western Civ is losing more and more with each new generation.
My dad hated the new version with Keira Knightley but he very much enjoys the 1995 version. Same with a couple of my brothers, though I doubt any of them would want to read the book. I know a couple of guys who read it, and liked it.
The language is not obtuse, 'you have bewitched me body and soul' or three times 'I love you' might seem more sensitive and a paragraph to learn- how Mr Darcy feels in danger by the existence of 'this young woman with sweetness and archness in her manner which made it difficult for her to affront anybody' might be dull for some people.
Well, think like that- Exaggration may bewitch you, Restrained humble opinions can make you bound to or comitted to.
@jarvisel aye, I didn't like that version... the musical score and the cinematography were excellent, but it lacked the weight and the superior acting of the 5-hr BBC version. Besides, Kiera Knightley isn't that great of an actress, though she is very pretty (in my humble opinion of course).
Haha--my sister tried to read "Pride & Prejudice" and felt the same way! The obtuse language was just too much for her. The movie, however, is so much better. We're both fans of it.
Not really. Mr. Darcy is far from "the perfect man". He's unsociable, stubborn, and opinionated. It is only by falling in love with Lizzy that he finally starts to improve (hmm--not that unlike real life, now is it?) It's the very fact that everything goes so terribly wrong and they argue and fight and almost don't get together that makes it an endearing story.
Well I agree with what you said but he does end up being her knight in shining armor when he fixes things with Jane and Bingley and finds Mr. Wickham and Lydia.
@TheMathGuy i completely disagree. He's not perfect but he realizes his imperfections. The point of the story isn't for each to achieve perfection through each other but to show us 2 ppl who really know themselves and are each in their own ways complete and happy about who they are. They don't NEED each other for anything, not even happiness. That's why they're so perfect for each other. And that's why as readers we fall in love with both of them.
@zinazina11 jane austen did actually put them together because they complete each other. darcy can learn something from lizzy and the other way round. she actually writes that in the novel ^^ but i still disagree with TheMathGuy. For me, darcy is the perfect guy^^ he´s honest and kind of shy (not really but i can´t find the right word for it^^)
@Lilithly i think the word you're looking for is 'awkward' :D he doesnt know how to behave in social situations, he tends to think of himself above most other people (thats where the pride kicks in) and he doesnt know how to act polite and fake interest when he's just not interested lol (unlike bingley). but i agree with you. hes a pretty great guy when you look past all that. hes got a good heart :)
haha i love you've got mail almost as much as pride and prejudice.

I absolutely LOVE Tom Hanks in this movie, and although I love Darcy, the look on his face when he puts the book down is hilarious!!! (:

Yeah, well what about the 'reimagining' of it? Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It even has ninjas in it.

I think the MATHGUY is the most truly and dearingly analyzer of Mr Darcy. Still the book is better.

My boyfriend could barely sit through the Keira Knightley version without trying to put a bullet in his head.

But it's because he loves her that he is so unsociable at first--because he didn't know how to act around her.

Haha, yeah, some guys don't like to be held to the exact same standards as Mr. Darcy. He's a chivalrous knight in shining armor.

Yeah you are so right, but I have to add to it by saying it always takes the 'right' girl for a man to realize his true potential...
