Notthing against Yamaha, they make some fine instruments. But JP and this Ken Smith 6...this is THE tone. I wish he'd do just one more album with this particular bass as the featured instrument.
One of my favourite bassists, this solo is fantastic. Great composer too. Consistently BAAD for over twenty yrs. I hope guys like Hadrien Feraud create a similar legacy
I think Patitucci has a rare blend of lyricism, harmonic knowledge, feel, and his own voice. I also like the fact that he can fit in a band and play the traditional role of a bass player as well (in all styles). A real inspiration to serious bass players and improvisers...

for some reason bass soloing on a 5 or 6 string past the 12th frets.....doesnt sound too much like a bass....more like a buzzy guitar solo that would have sounded better on a guitar
i was a jaco, pattitucci, miller, wootten fan.... until i saw sergino gianni.... look for him in youtube .. he's user name is" Bassisti "... he eats them all together... watch all his videos and be amazed...
NO one is going to "top" Patitucci's solo here. It's as harmonically, rhythmically and technically advances as any bass solo EVER and that's the truth.
Your opinion of this other dude must be high, but man, it just couldn't top this one, it could just be as good.
yeah... i never referred to the solo itself... i meant: Serino gianni, has either equaled or surpassed (i choose this) the skill, technicality , rhythm flow & feel, and harmonic beauty in general as a bass player. but each one of these bass players have solos that no other can top. thats why we learn them all... needles to say this solo is amazing.
you can't compare him to jaco, pattitucci, miller and wooten. he's got a bad timing and no sense for the harmony. just boring slapping all the time, he doesnt reach the niveau of any of them. but it's just my opinion. i hope my english is right.
Hi is one of the best players in the world. I admire his works with Chick Corea and as a soloist. But my favorite is Jaco Pastorious, he was the best. His sound was unique.
Ha man Jaco has his own style and so does John Patitucci? They are both musically gifted, that's for sure, and they are both virtuosos of the bass, period. They are both amazing to watch and they are both different.
And because Jaco is hella high when he's playing =)

@flcn92 I understand that he left Ken Smith for Yamaha because Mr Smith would not let him have any free strings!

The ironic thing is John didn't start playing 6 string until Chick gave it to him.

His skill is amazing, but I think that it sounds bad. This just isn{t a good el bass solo concept. Listen to Teen Town or Cruise Missle instead.
JP is a fine musician though. I love his slow au bass playing. No one has better tone.

is that a common six string bass or is it a piccolo?
grsouto 4 years ago
It is a "common" six string bass, a Ken Smith, tuned B-E-A-D-G-C. Because the highest string is C, it gives him that higher range for soloing.
Wow, this really is great.
UK2AK 4 years ago
Man, now patitucci trys to play it all east coast tradition, but we know his true roots!
