i'll be honest (not mean) and say this dude really shouldnt be explaining much of anything about acoustics to other people. he throws around a lot of words that might make it sound like he knows what hes talking about but a person who's done hard work and research into acoustics can tell he really doesn't. i really am not trying to be rude or flame the guy, it's just very dangerous to educate others about an already foggy subject with good intentions but unsound information. my two cents.
Tip: You will get much better camcorder audio quality (especially for measuring reflection levels) if you set the audio levels to MANUAL, not auto, as the mic volume won't be pumping up and down every second then.
I bought A LOT - enough for a booth to fill and walls for two rooms. Phone the foamfactory and tell them your room/area size and they'll tell you the best application for your needs.
@DubTurboBeats lol but i half to say it is a sweet ROOM you made tho very nice wish i had a way to do that right now but i gota wait on a better job :)
If you're just talking about the foam/paint/sound absorption you can start with little - all depends on your room/area you are trying to treat.
If you're talking about actual studio gear - there are plenty of beginner tools, daw's, and the like but I would start with a good sound card, earphones/monitors, and awesome VST's and sample kit collections - the rest is creativity based and preference re gear and brands.
Does a normal carton egg tray work? Because I am planning to cover the walls in my with egg trays... I play drums and guitar.... The room's wall by the way is half cement and half wood I mean in the right corner is wood and the left corner of my room is cement... I hope you can help me guys... :)
At the end the room still sounds pretty tubby. It definitely needs some traps as that found really isn't doing anything below about 200Hz. Great start, though. But now the big question: This looks like an apartment. What are you doing about not annoying the downstairs neighbours?
@qewconite Minium Rockwool...Really. So i can grow weed on my walls and have a sound booth in the same room.. How awesome. And since it needs to be a 10 x 10 i can do it legally in Humboldt. What a WIN!!!
VERY NICE HOME STUDIO YOU GOT THERE. FOAM FACTORY.GOTTA LOVE IT. I HAVE A VERY SMALL RECORDING STUDIO IN MY HOME AS WELL.AND I ALSO BOUGHT FOAM FROM THE FOAM FACTORY.IDK IF YOU HAD THIS PROBLEM,BUT THE GLUE U BUY FROM FOAM FACTORY ABSOLUTELY SUKSSSS.I HAD FOAM FALLING OF DURING THE NEXT 3 DAYS OF IT ALREDY BEING UP.SO I HAD TO PUNCH A LITTLE NAIL INTO EACH ONE.BUT THE FOAM WORKS AMAZING.NICE VID.IL POST A VIDEO RESPONSE OF MY STUDIO UPDATE SO U CAN TELL ME WAt u think.peace!!
@qewconite Yo, I got about a dozen sheets of mineral wool left over from previous construction in my house. I was just curious: is it really toxic? I`m planning on wrapping the things in fabric and use plywood sheets of according sizes to make sound absorption panels. Maybe this setup on the whole is going to decrease the toxicity, cuz that`s the only thing that bothers me about this whole business. Any info, anyone?
Your Great Brother ... May The Lord Bless you man ... i am gona build one too someday ... and when i do i will come to you for some tips later on :D i sub you peas sub me back bro ... you gona put up some beats ?
@qewconite Foam will work for a vocal booth and high reflections, but to treat your room you should really have rockwool or OC 703-705 for bass trapping,,,,good foam will work for early reflection points! And a BIG +100 to NOT using a closet as a booth, it will sound JUST LIKE a closet, very boxy!
Acoustic foam works for some natural slap back reverb but nothing else... You need some corner blocks in the low corners and some Triangle Bass Traps in the Top Corners point side down.... and a few treble traps on the wall... will take care of ya... a nice rug wouldn't hurt to throw on the floor.... noone likes to hear the singer tapping his foot.. lol
At 9:32 when he started making that "beat"... well, too much treatment for that kind of music, no need... so i wrote this comment and im off to other videos...
btw, doing a beat with your mouth, even if you think its a Bass drum sound, it is not, so the lowest frequencies are not present, no way you can say "no need" for bass traps, that foam all that absorbs its hi and mid, ONLY... thank God you are trained, lol
All depends fam - you can get cracking quality in many scenarios. Don't just look at 'footage' available. Consider the actual treatment, elements in/out of the room, the fact that this is a booth WITHIN a bigger booth (the treated room), I can record with the door open, take bits of the foam out, add more blankets/wood/dampeners... It's all about being creative not just following defaults. Mics vary, booths vary, treatments vary, be creative and you can achieve unreal quality.
No reading involved at all, I did try to script it in my head a lil' bit but once I started going it was a few all nighters and just being random with the cam. Maybe the glue got to me :P
@DubTurboBeats what you said in the end is true. Most of the people that doesn't make music can't hear the differens, but once you start making music for a while and know how to setup speaker and stuff, your ear can hear better even when your mixing so there you got the good part. Ahaha
hey i have a really important question how did you put your headphones in the booth like is it wireless or did you buy a really long cord then run it threw the ground ?
For this application yeah we simply got a very long 1/4" extension and drilled a hole into the door so we can feed wires through with it closed. Then simply insulate or double up on foam inside the hole and on the outside. The same goes for the wires for the mics, for the light, and now for the screen + keyboard/mouse extensions that are coming so I can be in the booth and record and play with the DAW all without having to leave the booth or have a sound man.
Duuuuude, where's my echo,-sounds good,I could tell the difference just on my computer when you moved out of the corner. We have about the same size room and I needed some ideal how to hook up a small studio. We have a carpet over the concrete for the floor. The dimensions are about the same. So far so good ,looking foward to part two.
Part 2, 3, and 4 are ready as well, click my username and scroll down you'll see all 4 (the 5th one is coming soon too, everything is now 100% setup)
Sounds like you're good to go just treat the walls, ceiling, any windows, doorways and figure out whether you'll have a sound room/booth IN the room, or a separate closet for the actual booth.
ay dub i know u said u found da foam on ebay but i anit found da people u say who have it is dere anyway for me to find it eaiser
