They kidnapped, murdered, and raped. Aside from that, they were just dandy.
You have serious moral issues. And I suspect that poor woman killed in the bank robbery, the superintendent of the Oakland schools, and the raped and tortured Patty Hearst wouldn't find your tribute too dandy.
It's shocking that rape, murder, arson, kidnapping, and blackmail failed to bring about the brotherhood of mankind that the SLA envisioned. Seems so...so...foolproof...where, oh where did they go wrong?
The SLA were a handful of misinformed middle class white kids led by an angry ex-con. Some fucking army! There were never more than a dozen of them.

Only the 70's, the most poisonous decade of the 20th century, could have produced such a bunch of pigtracks as these self-absorbed fools. Typical mindset was overwhelming self-righteousness combined with resentment and self-pity.
The 70s the most "poisonous" decade of the 20th century? But surely the SLA was attempting to revive the dimmed radical spirit of the 60s. And what of the bombing-throwing anarchists at the turn of the same century? To say nothing of the countless lives taken by extremist factions in Germany, Russia, Cambodia, Armenia, Ireland, Cuba, Argentina, etc. But perhaps you mean to speak only of the American times you personally remember.
"But surely the SLA was attempting to revive the dimmed radical spirit of the 60s"
And well it should have been dimmed--majority of 60's radicals were consumed with self-righteousness combined with resentment and self-pity--narcisistic, self-absorbed sociopaths. Not for nothing it was called the ME DECADE. I always wondered from what great store of righteousness the radicals presumed to judge everyone else.
"The 70s the most "poisonous" decade of the 20th century?"
Beginning of drug culture which still endures, sexual revolution which laid foundation for AIDS and some 25 STDS non-existent beforehand, 50% divorce rate, airline highjackings start to finish, serial killers start to finish--Corll '70-'73, John Wayne Gacy '78, Zodiac on West Coast, Son of Sam on East Coast, several others in between, slovenly dress and boorish behaviour everywhere compared to the 50's--pretty toxic.
Let's see here. I list examples of 20th century mass exterminations, and you counter by citing divorce, drugs, STDs and serial killers -- as if, in the last case, Hitler's body count rivaled that of Son of Sam, who's here linked to a 70s "self-pity" and "resentment" otherwise embodied by drug-taking, STD-spreading divorcees. And they in turn are linked to groups like the SLA -- slovenly brats apparently worse than regimes that took the lives of millions.
Oh, I'm only concerned with our own country and how standards declined in the 70's as compared to earlier times. I don't give any consideration to those other things--we defeated all of them. My personal favorite era is the 1920's--my parents' (1898-1958 & 1902-1995) generation--the Age of Ballyhoo, Age of Wonderful Nonsense, The Jazz Age, The Roaring 20's, short skirts, shingled hair, silk stockings, high living, the Fox Trot and Charleston, flappers and shieks. Next would be the 50's.
The SLA were idealistic revolutionaries at that time. They just went about doing it the wrong way. Good video and great song. They do deserve a tribute.
I gave this video 4 stars as it is interesting and I love the song by the Stones. But I don't think the SLA deserve a tribute, but the title might be not be serious?
Some of the SLA's critique of America was standard leftism of a kind that, years later, would become mainstream to the point where Oprah would somewhat tout it to housewives, albeit unknowingly, and naturally leaving out the Marxist (Maoist) aspects. In the meantime, the "pigs" the SLA took arms against have taken over completely, and today's youth goes right along with the program. I at least give the SLA points for idealism, however naïve and misguided.
she in her apartment making a tuna fish sandwish when terrorist burst in, kidnapped , torchered, raped, kept her in a clost for 50 days screaming propaganda in her ear while holding a gun to her forhead. what sheltered 19 year old girl couldn't be brainwashed and lead into a life of crime that she could have never concieved otherwise. we all would like to think that we oould have stood up to these evil masterminds and freed ourselves and turned them over to the police and been a great heroe...
These weren't 'dissidents' you brainwashed chitin . Their all traitors and murderers treated as such. How would you feel if your mother went to the bank got blasted with a shotgun and never came back? These 'Freedom Fighters' (aka terrorist assholes) killed a mother of four , it isnt a joke. Why don't you think before you type? Oh What ignorance youth breeds.
I was in my senior year of college and people were different then, more open to change but the SLA just didn't make sense. They talked about justice and liberating people and they killed two people. How weird. The best thing they did was kidnap Patty Hearst whose family are real pigs. I think being locked in a closet would freak out anyone so I think she part hated her parents and got off on this but she was messed up by the experience. The whole thing was very dramatic but also very bizarre.
I have to say as some one who watched the last stand of the SLA live on ktla chanel 5 in la that fatefull afternoon.I never could figure out why over 500 armed to the teeth police were needed to arrestn 7 road weary people that were surrendering at the time they were slaughtered out of hand by the LAPD?
"I never could figure out why over 500 armed to the teeth police were needed to arrestn 7 road weary people that were surrendering at the time they were slaughtered out of hand by the LAPD?"
Poor things! The standard explanation when law enforecement brings terrorists under control is that they over-reacted. That's what they're supposed to do--you don't give the other side a chance.
I dont like what the united states is right now and im not going anywhere. Why because we can change it. and you dont like it then you can kick rocks.
SLA is a good example for the american youth, today. We need to continue the strugglle of SLA.WE need the New Symbionese Liberation Army.Revolution Now!Bring the war home!
You milktoast sissy's are all talk, and no action. There are gang members in Fontana CA that did more than the SLA ever did. Crawl back in your hole. The SLA was a temporary, minor annoyance at worst. They were zero's then, just like you're a zero now.
What the SLA Commies did was give America a taste of it's own medicine...that is, like the Vietnam war. Bringin' it on home, you might say. Quite brilliant really in a way, though it seemed appalling to normal folks. Vietnam was appalling too. The SLA obviously didn't stage much of a revolution, but it was fabulous as performance art.
Hearst was not "brainwashed," she was an infantile opportunist. I do not agree with her abduction, but she used her captors as means to strike at her family, and believed she had honestly converted to the revolutionary cause.
You know what PlushHoney? I could be a real sarcastic smartass about your rationalization pertaining to my post. But I have a feeling you're a nice, sincere person, and though I may not agree with your logic, your opinion is just as valid as mine. Have a nice holiday.
I am perfectly entitled to my opinion about how I think that the Lyrics suit the SLA story :-) By the way, I am actually very interested in the story of the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst & the history of the SLA. They, in fact, did not want to 'take over the government'...they wanted to absolve the whole idea of a ruling government. They wanted to lead a revolution against the American government fought by African Americans, the lower classes, etc... :-)
My god, you're such a genius! I never realized these things. Thank you so much for educating all of us. Right on, man. That's just what Charlie Manson was saying too. Peace and Flower Power.
You're being sarcastic, right? I never said that I agreed with what they were doing. Not at all. But the whole "peace and flower power" aspect of the SLA that you mention was (although flawed and very poorly executed)an interesting theorey. You don't see much of that in college kids these days. And it's an easy pop to compare the SLA to Charles Manson and his family. They were nowhere near as psycho, disordered, pointless and cruel. Oh, and they were not a cult.
The song has nothing to do with the SLA story at all. They robbed banks and brainwashed a millionaires daughter. The wanted to take over the government. Ha ha what a joke!
If you think this is interesting, read Christopher Sorrentino's "Trance," a fictionalized account of this surreal episode that is "truer" than either the romantic or demizing spins we've been left with.
