  • "Hello and welcome to the baftas!"

  • This is one of my favorite episodes of Qi, because the way when Stephen says mein handy and kampfy chair, sounds sooo gay, yet sooo funny, all at the same time!

  • I used to know a girl who loved German and was a bit on the mad side, she'd have loved this

  • its pronounced hendy not handy lol come on steven get your act together!

  • Was fürn verrückter Hund!

(translation: What a feisty and remarkable person).

  • @Atvishees ghehehe

  • @Atvishees of course haha

  • oh no do they really laugh about us germans because we say "handy" instead of mobile phone? :D ok he says it really in a funny way:D:D

  • @Holsterodde It's definitely the voice. Anything in Stephen Fry says in German while flapping his hands is hilarious.

  • @Holsterodde ve do, ve do! Ich habe mein Handy gefunden!

  • @Holsterodde The voice Stephen uses is already very funny, but yes...you're all used to it of course so you won't see the funny side of it I imagine, but handy is a, to us, strange word. I'm Dutch and I've always found it funny, despite the German language being kind of close to Dutch. ;)

  • @xxAlchemistressxx Oh yeah that´s true. Some germans say that Dutch is the real german. I don´t konw why, maybe because it sounds so similar:D

  • @Holsterodde Dutch the real German? Never heard that one before...Our languages do sound similar, but you and I both know that there's a big difference none the less! Hollywood seems to mistake Dutch for German more than I'd like to know (I've seen it happen on tv once or twice, which annoys the hell out of me haha)

  • händy

  • there should be a 10 min video of stephen saying:

"Hello, und welcome to zi baftas"

    and

    "Oh mein handy"

    hetalia fangirl squee

  • Sogar die Engländer lachen schon über unseren übertriebenen Gebrauch von Anglizismen.

  • @Gezoluzifer

    Das ist soooo traurig!

  • lol im German and its freaking wired to see about wich "normal" thingt you can laugh :D

  • Wonder what those crazy Germans call a Kindergarten!

  • @Haeronthegreat

I will keep this in mind for future reference.

  • And what's even worse is the way the Germans pronounce 'laptop'... !

  • @Hindenburg12886 uhmm no its not?

  • Funnily enough after hearing that he will host the BAFTAs this year, I thought of the Handy video on here, and I thought, "Remember to do the German accent please, Stephen". LOL

  • then who was Handy?

  • I think Stephen is hosting the BAFTA's again this year - he so needs to do the accent!

  • WO IST MEIN HANDY?!?!?!?!?!?

  • I already knew that.... what's so funny?? I don't know alot of German... DOCH ICH LIEBE LaFee!!!!!

  • I think I may start calling my phone Mein Handy now xD

  • "I have to get back to Düsseldorf to see Kraftwerk"

  • lol, Stephen your Baftas opening line would've been the most gayest german accent ever :-)

  • "'Allo, und welcome to the Baftas"

    XD

  • I've started saying mein handy instead of my cellphone from the first time I saw this clip

  • I LOVE THIS!

  • As a German, I do have to say that "handy" is one stupid word indeed. WHO THE HELL came up with that!? *lol* It deserves to be made fun of.

  • jetzt ma ohne witz.... wie können britten mit ihrem akzent sich über die deutsche sprache lustig machen xDD

  • @Senesoul Es geht nicht um die Akzent, sondern um das Wort "Handy"

  • If I even heard a German say "Mein handy" I will just burst out laughing because of this

  • WERZ MAN HANDY *thinks about penis*

  • He sounds like this German lady I know hahaa

  • I scroll down not expecting there to be any Hetalia comments. When I saw that there were,I was happy dancing xD HETALIA FTW. BD

  • yes, we do call a mobile that... and it is perfectly ok to make fun of that :D

just make stuff "young" and "cool" we often use english words, even though it's usually nonsense.

e.g.: many germans keep their "handy" in their "body-bag" when they're at a "public viewing" :D

  • @SpreadDaFonk body-bag? Seriously? that's scary as hell!

  • I recently started working with a German company, and the first time I heard "Wo ist mein handy" for real, I nearly wet myself.

  • Stephen Fry and iggy would be best friends....Ludwig and Gilbert would be proud of your awesome accent!

Stephen Fry is so amazing..ahhh it makes me proud to be english....

    WUNDERBAR!

  • @OmNomNommingOnSouls Oh my Gilbird, another Hetalian? *high-fives*

And yes, Gilbert would be very, very proud. Though Ludwig would probably be in the corner facepalming XD

  • @ThePrincessSpottie hell yeah, Ore-sama is definitley one who spams replay on this vid, whilst (like you said) Ludwig would definitley be facepalming in corner...with Austria no doubt.

  • Stephen, bittebitte komm nach Deutschland und mach "SI" (Sehr interessant) für uns!!!

I would soooooo much love to see a German language episode of QI one day. His German might indeed be good enough for that...

  • @Vandersmaa I'd propose "ZI", i.e. "ziemlich interessant", which is not at all a slur on the fabulous interestinglirarety of this fine program, only a tad more accurate to the original meaning... And you, my dear friend, are absolutely right in pointing out that German television could very well do with a little bit of Fry (and, indeed, Laurie) - preferably on an everyday basis...

  • @kroschfoenigin You are so right, in my haste I did not translate it properly - so "Ziemlich interessant" it will be!!! And speaking of Hugh Laurie (who I am indeed also very fond of), check out his recent appearence on "The Graham Norton Show", where he spoke about performing in Germany... and misinforming the British audience that Germans shouted "uuuh" instead of "boo" - and we both know that we very well shout "boo", but it's "BUH!", not "boo", right? :-) Anglophile greetings from Vienna!

  • @kroschfoenigin Or how about "quasi interessant"? That way they don't have to change the logo.

  • ok, so... it's funny that we germans call a mobile phone Handy? XD

  • I laughed so hard, I almost fell out of mein kampfy chair.

  • @failrailtf2 vat vas zvery funny!

  • @failrailtf2 I love you.

  • @failrailtf2 BOOM!!!

  • @failrailtf2 L0L xD

  • @failrailtf2 DER KAMPFY CHAIR!?

  • Never. Gets. Old. : )

  • Neun menschen ihre handy verloren!

Translation: Nine people lost their mobiles!

  • @RikMcCloud

Actually, you said "Nine humans their handy lost"

  • my god

this is awesome I shall call my cell now mein handy!

    and I will giggle!

  • 9 Germans... well, you know the rest.

  • it's annoying to hear germans say the word because it was adopted as a german word with a totally different meaning

  • @MCAMVP More creepy is that its the fault of the marketing idiots that mobile phones are called today handy in germany. Its not good how they can influence a language when they are marketing something new and give it horrible names. I can understand loanwords like computer wich are working the way they are but mobile phone = mobil telephon in german.

  • Aww, so sweet with the German accent and the "stop it". Aww. Hehehe.

I love the German language and I wish I spoke it better than I do, likewise with me speaking French, Spanish and Polish and wish I knew more of it. I need a better concentration to learn more grammar and vocabulary. :op

  • XD i love Qi

  • XD i love Qi

  • Comment removed

  • The thing is that we don't actually have a genuine german word for it , other than "Mobiltelefon" which is far too long and cumbersome for everyday use... There have been suggestions such as "Taschentelefon" (which is just as long but slightly more funny) or even "Mofo", but they never caught on. As much as I hate the term "Handy" and as much as I try to avoid it, I'm afraid that it has become the one and only name for a cellphone...

  • @kroschfoenigin

Mofo would be just more hilarious. But not, because it sounds funny.

  • There is no way I could love Stephen Fry more than I do now

  • @chewyfied No we don't.

"Mein handy" in Sweden would be "Min mobil".

  • @mischiamnesiac They say handy in sweden too, it sounds a little less camp though.

  • I may just start to affect this accent when looking for "mein handy" :p

  • Is it camp, or is it kampf? ;)

  • ohh, Fry knows nothing about russian accent :D but handy is gorgeous!!

  • Comment removed

  • too bad he is gay cause he is frickin sexy :D like if you agree :D

  • I am german and hate that everyone calls their phone handy. This is why I always say "Mobiltelefon" (mobile phone) and try to change other people.

  • @mischiamnesiac Handy klingt voll schwul.

  • @mischiamnesiac

    I just don´t use one.

And handy, while you seem to hate the word, is LEGITIMATE! It is a common phrase through usage...someone coined the word to make it sound more appealing and awesome then boring old "Mobiltelefon"....it worked.

Also, it makes sense, since it is a telephone that is more handy then an actual telephone, don´t you agree?

  • @Chrinik Still camp though.

  • @grobo11 you can make ANYTHING sound camp gay if you go for comedic effect...

And you can ridicule ANYTHING, especially if it is not part of your culture and your audience is most likely not gonna understand it anyway...

This is basically how comedians work<.<

  • @Chrinik I already knew about 'Mein Handy' before watching this and I still found it camp.

  • @grobo11 Then so be it.

  • @Chrinik I don't agree, it sounds extremely camp, said in a camp voice or not.

  • Mr Fry is an absolute legend :')

  • I could seriously listen to him do that accent all day and never get sick of it.

Oh Stephen. Please get someone to be a surrogate and procreate, for gods sake. I volunteer right now.

  • @n39smm Oh yes so would I!

  • it is not uncommon for amateur radio operators (requires an FCC license) in the US to call their mobile radios (similar in form but more complex than "walkie talkies") instead as a handy talky.

  • I want "wer ist mein handy?" to be the ring tone of my phone.

  • @PollyJuice It's "wo", not "wer", by the way, "wer" would mean "who".

  • @PollyJuice WO ist mein Handy^^

  • I officially charmed a girl by impersonating this. Win.

  • Hello and velcome to ze baftas :DDD

  • Das ist die traurige Wahrheit.

    Sadly, it's true. XD

  • lol!!

  • love it. specially because im german lol

  • @ClementsTom

i no but its more funny like this XD

    hmmmm mien handy XD

  • @ClementsTom Ahoy there, Captain Pretentious.

  • @garnelaf As if Stephen Fry has any problems with being pretentious....

  • @ClementsTom Yes it is pronounced Hendy but no one can ever say Stephen Fry is not the sharpest tool in the box - he's a genius

  • Comment removed

  • @ClementsTom I really do think he is a genius and I have no idea how you can say he is crude; he's actually quite shy and he is also very humble which makes him even more likeable in my opinion. Everyone has their own opinion but I doubt very much if you could find anyone who will disagree that he is a very intelligent, witty and lovely person.

  • @Rachiejane1 His sense of humour is often crude - referencing men's arses and penis girth etcetera.

  • @ClementsTom by the way, that thing about Stephen having a "crude sense of humour" - he's not the only one who find these things to be humorous. It's a very british thing... The fact that Stephen Fry has so many "idolatrous fans" is perfectly justifiable. So just shhhhhh. kay? cool.

  • @ClementsTom I think you have a chip on your shoulder as far as people who speak with a posh accent are concerned. It's sad - you should look beyond that and see what a nice person he is. And he probably wouldn't survive on an estate in North London because he'd get stabbed by people who judge him on his accent like you. Stop being so closed minded - more people like him than not.

  • Wo ist mein Handy ?

  • FUCKING FUNNY :D

  • Vere is mien handi hahaahahahahahah

  • Stephen Fry, keep it up buddy worth every penny of the licence fee!!

  • That voice is only made funnier once you realize that Stephen is actually gay.

  • @broadcast185 I am from the colonies-... er, the US. You?

  • i love stephen fry <3

  • lol, i am german and i don't think i can hear the phrase "ich hab mein handy verloren" ever again without dying of laughter... xD

  • I say this whenever I'm looking for ANYTHING now.

  • I've got a new ringtone.

  • I used this in my German exam

I had to say I left something on the train so I said "mein Handy veloren"

For once QI comes out with a useful fact! hehe thanks Stephen! :D

  • Brilliant. This is one of my favourite parts from my favourite episode of QI. Very funny! <3 xx

  • wat series and episode is this from, if anyone knows. Actually SOOOOO funny. love stephen fry. <3

  • That accent suits him! LMAO

  • Wo ist mein Handy? never fails to get a smile out of me!

  • Damn you smarmy English people and your brilliant comedians!! *shakes fist*

  • I must say i don't think it is funny^^

i call like this when i search "mein handy"!!!!!!!!!!!

    xDDDD

  • *rooofl*

    "wo ist mein handy?"

    xD

  • Camp Stephen Fry is da best! lolx

I love how he seems so intelligent (like wayyy over average) yet he can still joke around like he does. That's very rare. He's an absolutely brilliant man x

  • @amezzeray2 don't worry it's working now for me. pfff "wo ist mein handy?"

  • jonathan ross and stephen fry should do the baftas together in a german accent

  • I guess Bruno modelled himself after Stephen

  • @adi87tya

I don't know why he has 6 thumbs down, he is clearly joking about Stephen's German voice, not making fun of his homosexuality which i think some of you might have mistaken him to do.

  • @ mahsafagga

    That's the point. Handy (handjob)

  • "Hello, welcome to The Baftas" and "Wheres mein handy?" Anybody else agree that he is a comic genius as well as having an IQ of about 4072! (hehehe)

  • was just in germany...handy shops! ads for handys! made me laugh every time

  • Stephen does camp a little too well...

    =D

  • well he is gay...

  • Which saddens me to no end...

    :,{

  • @ihply0106 errr...why?

  • They are just joking. Cool down.

  • @mahsafagga haha well however they pronounce it you'll have to admit it's hilarious they call it 'handy' in the first place... and these guys are just joking, surely that doesn't make them 'haters', where's your sense of humour

  • I really wish he had done the BAFTA's!

And I love the laugh Stephen does before he realises what Alan's asked and replies "no." HEE!

  • "Hello, und velcome to ze BAFTAs." Classic.

  • XDD I just died when he said that. <3

  • "Ich hab' mein Handy verloren!" I never knew that the simple phrase of "I lost my mobile phone" could be so funny! :-)

  • He did an AudioBoo today where he moaned about his Handy ... it was hysterical.

  • I was told he is fluent in German

  • this is just great love when Stephen speaks german quite well actually :D

  • Can anyone tell me what episode this is? Which series?

  • Hahaha I just noticed what Alan did at 0:16 - his face, it's like he's trying to supress a burp or something!

  • There's something very arousing about Stephen's German accent

  • @squishy3000 i agree ;)

  • Ah, Stephen Fry is so awesome. Alan Davies rocks too :) QI is the best, but this was my favourite part of an episode ever... And yeah, certain words/phrases in German do sound a bit camp, but that isn't a negative thing!

  • It's an observation, it's not like he's stereotyping Germans. If you don't 'get' this kind of humour, then go away and watch something else.

  • brilliant.

  • haha..sehr witzig..

  • love it!

  • We still love to stereotype, because we find it hilarious!!!

  • Does Stephen Fry speak german?

  • ein Bißchen

  • No, we really really can't. Surprised? What surprised me was the fact that your windmill has the internet

  • And here I thought windmills were stereotypes of us Dutchies :D And I have to agree with all the stereotype lovers: they *are* hilarious!

  • *ahem* I meant that first one to be "stereotypical" ;)

  • no no we cant.

  • It's called irony

  • It's not sterotyping,just a bit of fun!

He's just saying that it sounds camp is all.

  • Oh, come on! If they really believed in poor stereotypes, they'd be too scared of causing a war to bother.
