My parents bought 3 of these for me and my 2 brothers. I disassembled all 3 and they never went back together again! (I think they were intended for older kids than we were at the time!)
I had one too. My dad put him together, then he found out how much noise it made and he said "Oh shit . . . if I'd have known how loud it was gonna be I wouldn't have put it together." He was right, that damn thing was loud!
I drove my parents crazy asking for this as a kid. I would always say "I wish for a Mr. Machine", in my lispy little voice. I finally got it and loved it. I recently repurchased one to relive my childhood.
I remeber my Mr. Machine, I loved that thing., My neighbour ( an older boy) apparently loved it more, as he took it from me, I hope that , Mr. Machine attacked him as the mean kid slept. hehe
I am 54 and I still have not gotten over not getting one for Xmas! I told my parents exactly what I wanted, but did they get it? Nooooo! I got some stupid transparent clock; I guess, it was supposed to be educational. So, I had to play with Karen Pope's. Of course, she got a Mr. Machine for Xmas -- probably because they would live a sandwich and milk for Santa.
Sadly, some people are unaware that an "X" was an early symbol for believers in Christ, as was a fish. In ancient Roman days, when Christians were persecuted for merely being Christian, they used these 2 symbols in hopes of fooling Roman soldiers. So an "X" is not some evil secular shorthand, it is actually a symbol for Christ with centuries of history. In fact, it was BEFORE we celebrated Christmas on Dec. 25th!
I had one that was built sometime in the mid 1970s when I was a kid...in the mid 1970s.l...by that time they'd put more machinery in there so Mr. Machine could whistle while he walked along...mine played "Yankee Doodle Dandy".
I wish they would have allowed us to hear him "talk". All I remember was a sound that sort of went "Aaaaaaaaaa...", which hwas probably something scraping against one of the serrated gears. I got mine in 1961.
Got one of these about 1962 when I was 5 or so - was my buddy for some time then I got older and sat it aside - my brother 3 yrs younger than me got hold of it - never saw it again in one piece but rather one piece at a time, here there and everywhere. Even if they made these again it wouldnt be the same as it would be cheap Chinese junk knockoff toys. The old stuff was the good stuff. Try and find an all metal Tonka or Nylint anymore in the stores - or anything made in the US for that matter.
I really wanted one of those when I was a kid. I even asked Santa! As it turned out, it was too expensive for my parents to afford and Santa totally let me down. I've heard that your really couldn't take it apart and put it back together the way they said you could in the commercial. Ah, the good old days--when kids were given unrealistically high expectations of what toys would do in commercials, only to have their dreams crushed when they finally got the toy!
You actually can take it apart and put it back together again, however, it wasn't something a 5 or 6 year old could do. I have an original Mr. Machine and I took him apart to clean him up and I just followed the instructions. He also also came with a wrench, a large set of instructions and display insert.
Wow, what a blast from the past! I wanted Mr Machine so badly when I was little, but my parents didn't think it was a girl's toy. Fortunately, I had brothers!! I loved him!
Oh man !! This really brings me back ! My mom got me a Mr.Machine for Christmas when I was little . But he didn,t last that long , I wore him out from winding him up so much . Thanks for posting this trip down this boomer,s memory lane !

My mother wouldn't let me take mine apart because she said I wouldn't be able to put it back together. You can probably guess the rest of the story.
