@dshy76 Evrybody can enjoy jazz, you dont have to recognize chord patterns.
But when you play the instrument that you hear and you have a well trained ear you may appreciate it more..
I play jazz-guitar my self and because of that i do appreciate a lot of music others would find to 'technical' or 'complex' in harmonies. And by knowing how it is to play the instrument and how the original composition is, it is really intresting to hear how the musician improvises on the song.
@dshy76 depends on how well you know harmony and the song. an intermediate (for lack of a better word) level jazz musician like myself can hear "everything"; what chord, most of the alterations "color notes"to the chords. if you know what a simple "C" triad (chord) sounds like,C-E-G and you add Bb, then it is a "C7". if you add a D, then it's C 7 9. i can hear the diff. Take a music/jazz appreciation class at a JC. It's how i started. But beware, u might get hooked! i'd say "simply" enjoy it.
@dshy76 there is no "typical" listener, at a show 40% might be musicians at different levels. i play jazz, the guy next to me might play piano, but not have studied harmony.
my wife plays sax (6 years) some jazz melodies, but wouldn't know the name of any chord a musician is improvising "over". a good improviser will "spell" out the chord with notes from that chord, and always keep the melody in mind, thus you in the audience will have an idea where in the song you & he are. i hope that helps.
@dshy76 lastly, i'd say you are right, at the end of your question. the listener should be able to enjoy it with no knowledge of jazz harmonies, and without even having heard the song beforehand. the rhythm, the musical "colors" he/she invokes, the interaction between musicians should make it enjoyable for you.
okay, so your improv should relate directly to your chord changes (for now). autumn leaves has a pretty basic and understandable chord progression (and common, ii V I, or 2 5 1). when you go to solo, try to think about the notes that transition from one chord to another, so it flows with the chords and transitions with them. and btw, make sure you're playing all the right chords. keep practicing and don't give up! it takes a lot of time, patience, and practice!
@henar143 agreed. make up one idea in the beginning for your improvisation and then stick to that idea for the rest of your improv and just keep building on it. don't just play scales up and down the piano like youre doing. anyone can do that. if you take my above advice your solo will start to come alive and you will get into it a lot more.
If you are serious about becoming a professional player: my opinion is; Get an acoustic piano . Keep working with rhythm tracks or a metronome and work on a 12/8 or triplet feel in your lines.. thats what helps 'swing' You have a lot together though.. go out and play any gig you can..jazz or not.. :)
real nice. i have to lern this song on keyboard for my keyboard lessons and i have to change this song a little bit..i love the song and i love it to change some things.
But you should perhaps add more accents and silents in the right hand. And it's true your left hand is a bit repetitive. I advise you to listen to some Bill Evans (he did a record of Autumn Leaves too, which is very nice), and imitate the interaction he plays with his 2 hands. SOmetimes the melody of his solo is
Man! thanks for posting this. It's brilliant! I don't know much about piano but I jam on bass along to your arrangement of that wonderful song as I find it the best for that! Cheers
I thought it was very nice, but I do have a few comments. First, try not to leave so many empty spaces when you play through the head; it's nice that you try to fill them with left hand comping, but attempt something else (like a fill with the right hand). Also, be careful in your solo to avoid wandering. Try to think in terms of lines, not individual notes. It also helps to listen to yourself, as well as to the pros. Keep up the effort! =D
You have some great improv ideas, but your timing is a little off on this tune. Work on the form, and you will have it all. Where did you get the bass and drums accompanyment? They were really good sounding.
you've gotta get the melody out better the first time. it sounds like you're fudging and attempting to find the melody. and the solo needs to swing a bit more but you're doing good. try and get the notes moving on the off beats instead of right on the 1 2 3 and 4.

Great performance... Sounds very nice..
I am quite new to jazz music.. A have a query - does a typical jazz listener recognize chord progressions in the
improvised section.. (He obviously may not know the chord names).. Or is it that the listener just enjoys the
improvised music without understanding where the musician is (in the chord progression)..

Improvisation is very poor, lack of ideas and phrases;

I'd rather use chords.
The Chord progressions are (if I remember right):
Cm7 - Fmaj7 - Bbmaj7 - Ebmaj7 - Am7b5 - D7 - Gm (-G7) X2
Am7b5 - D7 - Gm - Gm
mlavik1 2 years ago
@mlavik1
Cm7 - F7- Bbmaj7 - Ebmaj7
Am7b5 - D7 - Gm - Gm (optional G7)
Err. Hope that helps. You had Fmaj7 for bar 2, which is wrong...
