  • >>>I want to become a jazzman

Hi! You do it very well indeed! Congrats!

  • muy buena, me encanta la interpretación

  • Great performance... Sounds very nice..

I am quite new to jazz music.. A have a query - does a typical jazz listener recognize chord progressions in the

improvised section.. (He obviously may not know the chord names).. Or is it that the listener just enjoys the

improvised music without understanding where the musician is (in the chord progression)..

  • @dshy76 Evrybody can enjoy jazz, you dont have to recognize chord patterns.

But when you play the instrument that you hear and you have a well trained ear you may appreciate it more..

I play jazz-guitar my self and because of that i do appreciate a lot of music others would find to 'technical' or 'complex' in harmonies. And by knowing how it is to play the instrument and how the original composition is, it is really intresting to hear how the musician improvises on the song.

  • @dshy76 depends on how well you know harmony and the song. an intermediate (for lack of a better word) level jazz musician like myself can hear "everything"; what chord, most of the alterations "color notes"to the chords. if you know what a simple "C" triad (chord) sounds like,C-E-G and you add Bb, then it is a "C7". if you add a D, then it's C 7 9. i can hear the diff. Take a music/jazz appreciation class at a JC. It's how i started. But beware, u might get hooked! i'd say "simply" enjoy it.

  • @dshy76 there is no "typical" listener, at a show 40% might be musicians at different levels. i play jazz, the guy next to me might play piano, but not have studied harmony.

my wife plays sax (6 years) some jazz melodies, but wouldn't know the name of any chord a musician is improvising "over". a good improviser will "spell" out the chord with notes from that chord, and always keep the melody in mind, thus you in the audience will have an idea where in the song you & he are. i hope that helps.

  • @dshy76 lastly, i'd say you are right, at the end of your question. the listener should be able to enjoy it with no knowledge of jazz harmonies, and without even having heard the song beforehand. the rhythm, the musical "colors" he/she invokes, the interaction between musicians should make it enjoyable for you.

  • okay, so your improv should relate directly to your chord changes (for now). autumn leaves has a pretty basic and understandable chord progression (and common, ii V I, or 2 5 1). when you go to solo, try to think about the notes that transition from one chord to another, so it flows with the chords and transitions with them. and btw, make sure you're playing all the right chords. keep practicing and don't give up! it takes a lot of time, patience, and practice!

  • Improvisation is very poor, lack of ideas and phrases;

  • @henar143 agreed. make up one idea in the beginning for your improvisation and then stick to that idea for the rest of your improv and just keep building on it. don't just play scales up and down the piano like youre doing. anyone can do that. if you take my above advice your solo will start to come alive and you will get into it a lot more.

  • i really liked it

  • Nicely done! you're on the right track!

  • You're already a jazzman. Well done.

  • CHECK OUT KEITH JARRETT'S VERSION. (sorry for yelling)

    >/.

  • really great!..........i love this version!

  • good ax

  • If you are serious about becoming a professional player: my opinion is; Get an acoustic piano . Keep working with rhythm tracks or a metronome and work on a 12/8 or triplet feel in your lines.. thats what helps 'swing' You have a lot together though.. go out and play any gig you can..jazz or not.. :)

  • mate that was jazzy! your are a jazz man let alone wanting to be one. foot tappingly awesome. nicccceee

  • can u plz send the music sheet to me?

I will give you my email...plzZZ

  • I'd rather use chords.

The Chord progressions are (if I remember right):

    Cm7 - Fmaj7 - Bbmaj7 - Ebmaj7 - Am7b5 - D7 - Gm (-G7) X2

    Am7b5 - D7 - Gm - Gm

  • @mlavik1

    Cm7 - F7- Bbmaj7 - Ebmaj7

    Am7b5 - D7 - Gm - Gm (optional G7)

Err. Hope that helps. You had Fmaj7 for bar 2, which is wrong...

  • Thanks for correcting me! ;)

  • i could tell u the chords in Gm/Bb

  • el jazz no es ir a destiempo..

  • Check out Bill Evan's version.. Also, Miles Davis with Herbie Hancock

  • good job at 01:35, 01:36 !!!

  • not worse, but some notes which you play sound not good. 3*

    thanks

    keep it up!! :)

  • real nice. i have to lern this song on keyboard for my keyboard lessons and i have to change this song a little bit..i love the song and i love it to change some things.

    real nice playing!

  • For all the jazz sheets look on the REAL BOOK ( the Bible of jazz ). There are many. Search them on eMule ;)

  • fail. hands move but no sound comes out.

  • Sound/video sync problem.

  • Awesome work. Love the improv!

  • Love this :D! Do you have sheetmusic for this one :D I'd like to learn how to play it!

  • also played at the same time with his left hand. Also his chords fall with a rythm parallel to his right hand.

Congrats you're on the way to be a great jazzman!

  • your solo is great in my opinion!

But you should perhaps add more accents and silents in the right hand. And it's true your left hand is a bit repetitive. I advise you to listen to some Bill Evans (he did a record of Autumn Leaves too, which is very nice), and imitate the interaction he plays with his 2 hands. SOmetimes the melody of his solo is

  • Nicely done!, but what an awefull piano sound.

Also dont be too repetitive in the left hand.

  • you're on the right track!!well done man.....listen to bill evans!!you're great.five star!!!!!

  • Great work. Just ignore these "teachers". If Bill Evans would have listened to their advice he wouldn't have been Bill Evans.

  • man this is garbage!!!!!....lol.. i'm just play'n this is extremly good i wish i could play as good as you your very very great...lol

  • is it a standard of something to have the audio out of synch with the video.

at least you know what to expect before you hear it...

  • Man! thanks for posting this. It's brilliant! I don't know much about piano but I jam on bass along to your arrangement of that wonderful song as I find it the best for that! Cheers

  • tempo!

  • I thought it was very nice, but I do have a few comments. First, try not to leave so many empty spaces when you play through the head; it's nice that you try to fill them with left hand comping, but attempt something else (like a fill with the right hand). Also, be careful in your solo to avoid wandering. Try to think in terms of lines, not individual notes. It also helps to listen to yourself, as well as to the pros. Keep up the effort! =D

  • You have some great improv ideas, but your timing is a little off on this tune. Work on the form, and you will have it all. Where did you get the bass and drums accompanyment? They were really good sounding.

  • If you want to be a Jazzman.....you have to go to the Jazz school...they show you the styles of playing.....

  • The version I am learning is very similar. The rhythm is the same; however, the timing of the notes are different.

  • I highly enjoy your interpretation. Unfortunately, here the vid played out of synch with sound.

  • Vous connaissez le morceau par coeur ?

Vous ne tournez pas les pages de la partition...

J'apprécie beaucoup le rythme et les variations.

  • ce n'est pas le morceau le + difficile à apprendre ;o)

    Merci pour les comments :)

  • Keep playing ! You feel it... and I enjoy it very much !

  • dude its good...just play how you feel its comfy iight? there is not right or wrong way when you play piano but remember the basics later!

  • forget the comment .. you are ok..

    that's "Jass"

  • what Does "Jass" Mean ?

  • I think it means jazz :P

  • Roger!!all that. Jazz.

     thx

    Jazzman

  • @futurejazzman ebonics (ghetto black american) "individualistic" respelling of jazz.

  • Very nice but when you play just a piano....(without bass and drums)....you have to do the Bass walking in your left hand....

  • need more practice...

  • very good!

  • magnifique

  • It's one of my favorite tunes. It's a pleasure hearing you play it. Thanks!

  • troppe note non ci stanno...capisco i cromatismi...ma sui tempi forti no..

  • that's really good :) may i have the sheet music please? just to spread the love :D

  • cool!

  • you've gotta get the melody out better the first time. it sounds like you're fudging and attempting to find the melody. and the solo needs to swing a bit more but you're doing good. try and get the notes moving on the off beats instead of right on the 1 2 3 and 4.

  • hey dude i am new on e tube, you play almost like me work hard and improve.

  • I think the audio in the video is off a little. But you played really well. Sounds jazzy :)

  • Long live the dear old Mark Levine book:)

  • Many Thanks To VolvoxBurger.

He seems to be a very available and helpful guy :o)

  • Welcome to Youtube, it's a great first post. I like your right hand melodies quite a bit.
