Is she really 57 here?! Just awesome. Sutherland was infectiuos. You can listen to "current" divas, admire them etc. But listening to other voices in "her" roles is like moving from a castle to a doll house. Nothing wrong with it. Just a matter of size. Marie in her prime remains unmatched.
What a wonderful celebration of the return of your account! As usual, Sutherland gives an all-out performance (even though she's a little long in the tooth). I've always loved this scene (what a ham, lol), and she does it excellently here! We have you to thank for showing us this video, not to mention the person backstage who took it!
P.S. - Who are playing the Marquise and Sulpice? Looks like the Marquise actually did play the piano too, which is great!
Here is the information for this clip: Metropolitan Opera House October 24, 1983 LA FILLE DU RÉGIMENT {74} Marie...................Joan Sutherland Tonio...................Alfredo Kraus Marquise of Berkenfield.Gwynn Cornell Sergeant Sulpice........Ara Berberian Hortentius..............Andrea Velis Duchesse of Krakentorp..Jane White Peasant.................William Mellow Corporal................William Fleck Conductor...............Richard Bonynge

Wow, so rare! As most people commented: Amazing!! BTW, why the angle was taken all from the side of the stage?
