We wouldn't even lost the British colonies if were not because the bloody French Empire and Spanish Empire ganging up on us, we soon took of them though!
@Obistalker1 Hey, I can't remember exactly what it was I wrote, so forgive me if I contridict myslf here lol... well here goes. Yea I think the way they portray the english in this film as ruthless savages that kill everything in their path is somewhat untrue. In regards to the fighting scenes the formations and such I'm not so sure I'm no expect on18th centry battle lagistics unfortunatly. I do find the ambush situation as a little bit silly however. I mean, comon they just stand there?
This load of rubbish scrip is painfull to watch as a Brit lol.. what a load of rubbish the brittish never careless went into a brutal onslaught like this.. many died but not like this
@MrRedeyedJedi It must be terrible to be British and watching this! I'm a reenactor in a Loyalist regiment and this is NOT how the British fight, there's more elegance to 18th century warfare that people don't appreciate these days. I find this movie rather amusing and I find this video even funnier!
Funnily enough the french monarchy condemned themselves to destruction by supporting the revolution. It encouraged frenchmen to revolt against the king.
@Almelundmovieco lol it sure does. Who ever put this soundboard with the battle scene must be a bit fucked in the head. why combine that shitty music with pain death and suffering?
actually Ra1n8ow the french would not join the fight until we could prove to them that we could hold our own the french only fought in two major engagements
the reason for that is the inaccuracy of the muskets, its impossible to shoot someone with a musket the way we fight wars now, with the introduction of rifling, we started to see skirmishers in loose formation who were able to hit even the other skirmishers in loose formation, eventually, that style of warfare became more popular, and here we are today
Yeah but come on they should use tactics and get closer to each other so their muskets can reach. None of this formation, take turns firing while playing music on the battlefield crap...
Wtf! What else could you do with a ridiculously inaccurate weapon such as the musket. Anyway an AK47 would not beat all the well trained troops, the guy would get blown to pieces!
We could have put more resources into the campaign, but decided to withdraw because of certain other countries becoming involved. I didnt say were we won, I just want to point out that you did NOT win from a militarily perspective, and you certainly did not defeat the British Army with pitchforks contrary to some popular belief!
I agree, we couldn't fight France and Spain and America all at once, we needed to come home and defend against invasion, which we did. BTW we historically won this battle, the writer just took an American victory and this battle and pulled it together. Also the last bit where they chase the americans only to their impending doom is a little reminiscent of Braveheart is it not?!
This battle actually is officially supposed to be a mixture of Guilford Courthouse and the Cowpens. The bit were the British troops run over the hill and American marksmen shoot them to pieces (which you said reminded you of Braeheart) was in reality Daniel Morgan's Rifle Corp at the Cowpens and led to an American victory, but the presence of Greene and Cornwallis with his orders to fire at the center did happen at Guilford's Courthouse... these just mixed the battles together.
It actually happened though... Daniel Morgan's Rifle Corp killing General Banistre Tarleton's loyalist cavalry who were infamous for slaughtering surrendering patriot forces at several instances. Colonel "Tavington" sound familiar?
@MiKeDpRoDuCtIoNs Vietnam....too soon? Well, I think the US only exists thanks to the intervention of the French at Yorktown, the Spanish and the Dutch also (yes the Spanish and Dutch too) Fair enough, one British army was trapped at Yorktown (thanks to Cornwallis being just a nob regardless of nationality or rank, and all his men thought it was a bad idea - as they could have moved north earlier to New York to join with 8,000 Redcoats under Clinton, meaning a rather unstoppable force) and this
@MiKeDpRoDuCtIoNs ...individually caused error ultimately led to the narrow loss of the war for Britain. Even so, its likely that the brave average joe 7,500 strong British Garrison commanded by the flawed upper class twit Cornwallis to stay, could have repulsed the Continental and Minutemen force. If a storm hadn't scattered the British fleet, and the French Fleet and 10,000 troops had not interfered, Britain would have regrouped, and won fair and square, simple. USA owes a lot to France end of
@ThePalaeontologist You really think that? You don't think that fighting a war 6,000 miles away, as part of a world war in which britain was involved and split on all fronts against the Dutch, French and Spanish, was the real cause? And that there was no political will at home to win the war? Britain could probably have sent over 100,000 troops and had a nazi style approach to occupy/kill every town, but to what end? They realised it was not winnable on those terms.
@MiKeDpRoDuCtIoNs Er, I think anyone with a brain realises britain lost the war. It's OK to have an intelligent debate about the reasons why and to analyse them.
i would like to point out that france didn't fully come in to the fighting part of the war, until after it was apparent that America had a good shot at winning. Britain was a power hungry war machine back than, so France didn't want to fight against them if there was a chance for them to lose and be humiliated.Plus, France had money problems and didn't want to go broke by investing in a lost cause.
well it was a english civilwar and all so only 12% of the british army was over there fighting,as they had biger fish to try in other wars,if briton wanted to win it would of been easy, very easy
Vipernight, Britain was otherwise engaged pretty much continualy fighting the French and its many allies at this moment in time 1792-1815 & fighting America 1785 to 1773. only 12% of British troops were sent to America and still they won the majority of battles and took far more citys, they infact burned washington to the ground! Americas fleet and trade were decimated by the Royal Navy! - Cryslers Farm 800 Brits to 8000 Americans and you still lost. there was no catigorical US victory!
@ra1n8ow That is a load of rubbish. Britain held its ground honourably and loss far less than USA did - France got ITS ass absolutely kicked to death by the British in the Peninsular War, the Napoleonic Wars and basically anywhere else we bumped into them across the world. Britain has always taught france lessons in war. And lets face it, 9/10 War of Independence battles were British Victories outright. Britain wasn't just agaisnt Continentals and French - Spanish and Dutch too ;)
@ThePalaeontologist It was our Vietnam so to say - there are many similar occurrences in this conflict as in the Vietnam debacle . Lack of political will , diminishing public support and in our case we were fighting France , Russia , Holland , Prussia & Spain !
Still look what happened afterwards we grew in strength...then 1914 came and the rest is history as they say !
parliment decidide they didnt want to figth with the rebels as we had valuble colonies to look after like india but the sovrenty did not want to surrender so we continued fight with no renforcements and manged to hold thanks to are mighty navy hold onto the costal cities and new york and philadephia however the british army could no longer aford this tic for tac warfare and surrender forcing the monarchy to formely hand over america to the united states
lol if you say so, then again a lot of countries say that they are the largest and most powerful blah blah blah, I know America certainly did, and Russia probably as well so you personal words on the subject equal the words of a biased man to me
mel gibson is the biggest sell out ever he only agrees to be in films that are aimed at humiliating the english why else would an american want to be in braveheart.
I just find it so fascinating how the British on here try to use that old trick in order to excuse their defeat... "Well the Americans never would have won without the French."
1.) The British Army hired 30,000 Hessian mercenaries to fight their war because they had little man power and knew that their own infantry couldnt defeat the Colonials alone.
2.) The French arrived late in the course of the war and they saw little ground action and combat. French assistance was fought on the seas.
It depends what you call a victory or defeat. COventional war, the British could win. An unconventional war, the British were no match at all up against the Continentals.
The war was a hopeless and lost cause for England. We know this for several reasons. The British supply ships were seized, the Conttinentals had better intelligence due to spying, and likewise, the British did not know the land due to inaccurate maps and their plain lack of knowledge of the terrain.
How that little wanker can kill so many Brits is beyond me, I'd smash fuck out of Mel Short arsed Gibbon in three minutes, so would most Average Brits!!!
riight...the british are little puppets while the americans are all heroic and mighty and skilled at being cool. rofl yea..right...The british whooped americans but.
