Not that this'll change your mind, but the following is a quote from Roddenberry himself: "Yes, there's certainly some of that - certainly with love overtones. Deep love. Is it just me or is McCoy a bit of a stereotypical redneck, being a heavy drinker, and a bigoted racist? Since it's the future though, he isn't picking on the black girl; no he's a true racist in the sense that he's picking on someone not from his own race from an ACTUAL other race, in this case a Vulcan.

@ShottyMario Well, let me put it like this - I don't think a character like McCoy would ever be green-lit on a 2010 sci-fi show given the way he talks about Spock. Calling someone' green-blooded, inhuman' is more than irritation- its pretty much outright racism. As for Spock...well, its alittle ironic because in making such snide remarks and condescending gestures, he's showing perhaps the MOST human emotions of all: pettiness and deep insecurities. All arrogance comes from personal insecurities

@ShottyMario Plus it ought to be remembered that Spock's insecurities come from a strained relationship with his Vulcan father. McCoy doesn't have that foundation to fall back on as a valid excuse for his own insecurities and inappropriate behaviour and remarks towards Spock. Most humans find Spock at least tolerable because they know Vulcans are an emotionless, logical, slightly arrogant species to begin with, and so long as they accept that, the two races get along fine 9/10 times.

Not to mention the fact that Spock IS green-blooded and not human. And Spock's character was cleverly written to show emotion without actually showing it (for the most part). So lighten up.

No the Vulcans weren't conquered, I think this was written at a time when pulp sci fi was the norm humans versus aliens so the writer may have assumed that in order for humans and aliens to be co-operating one of them must have "conquered" the other. Since the scene worked well no one bothered rectifying the line.
