  • two best locomotives together sad that both of them are gone.

  • @southern4501isawesom

They're not gone. They're just not in action anymore. If they were both really gone, then that would a whole new, and much worse, tragedy.

  • 'Round and around the bell goes at 0:18.

  • 1522's legacy lived on as for one or more years, frisco 1630 had a whistle that sounded exactly the same as 1522's.

  • Sad that both engines have been mothballed..

  • You could NEVER get this close now. There's always some railroad nazi cop screaming at you to get back.

  • @deloreanman14 at least when you're onboard the train and when you order soup there's no railroad soup nazi saying "NO SOUP FOR YOU!" LOL, just kidding

  • cool video

  • ex SR SD40-2 on ex SR rails

  • wow

  • lol 360 bell spinning :P

  • Isn't 1522 a Light Mikaido?

  • No. Frisco 1522 is a 4-8-2 Mountain-type steam locomotive. Trust me, I see her everytime I go to The Museum of Transportation.

  • @Jared1452 She 4 leading wheels. So that makes her a Mountain-type Locomotive.

  • Look at those girls go! LONG LIVE STEAM!!!

  • WHOA!

I didn't know an old streamliner was with this train

  • LONG LIVE 1522!!!!

  • Glory Days, well they'll pass you by, Glory Days

    --Bruce Springsteen

  • Oh my god that bell is so funny! XD

    still what a cool train.

  • THE MOST COOLEST!!!

  • The railroad or muesem that Frisco 1352 is in should purchase Frisco 1522 to run doubleheaded exursions

  • Too bad both of these locos don't run anymore.

  • Too bad the 611 isnt in steam anymore!!!

  • I love that whistle! Beautiful!

  • I thought that was 611's whistle blowing, not 1522's whistle. Awkward.

    -Max

  • Welp Max, what engine do you see the whistle steam- blowing off of, at 0:45?

1522's whistle is massive sounding! Gotta love it.....

  • I was lucky enough to be on this excursion. Thanks for the video

  • See the engineer flip the cameraman the bird? Classic. FOAMER.

  • What part of the video did the engineer flip him the bird?

  • That wasn't the engineer; it was probably a railfan getting a cab ride since he didn't have any Steam RR outfit on. And the guy who sits on the left of the cab is the fireman. The person who sits on the right is an engineer.

  • I don't think it was a finger. I think it was a quick wave.

  • Greatest whistle I've ever heard on a steam locomotive!

  • your so right and the whistle blower has skill too

  • It's a Hancock 3-chime.

  • hey is the hancock 3 chime on any other engines if so how can i find

  • WMSRR 734 has a Hancock 3-chime

  • dang man its been months since i posted i guest u were the only one who knew and cared thanx

  • @NWRRSteamPower You should hear a 6 chime whistle! They're great whistles!

  • I just saw silent Frisco 1522 at the museum, the engineer was going crazy with that bell.

  • Damn, the Jay looks exelent!

  • The Frisco 1522 is a magnificent steam locomotive. She is one of my favorites. It's a damn shame I never got to have a ride on her while she was still in service. I hope she gets taken back out of retirement.

  • I like 1522's whistle. It really describes the 1522 as a really brutal engine.

  • I remember a few years ago we had a steamtrain come through minneapolis, MN. The prettiest sight I have ever seen. Does anyone know what train comes through yearly up in MN? My 2 yr old is in love with trains and I would love to take him for a ride on one.

  • Could be #261 out of the GN Shops/Mpls Jnctn, Minneapolis, MN. Check out Friends of the 261 web page varify if this is the engine.

  • It is!..thank you SO much. I know my little 2 year old will LOVE it! He gets all teary eyed just watching the trains. This past summer we "spent the day out with Thomas." He thought that was the greatest. It's great how both children and adults can enjoy the trains.

  • You are welcomed. Yes! the sight, sound and the power of a steam engine is unforgetable. Especially the likes of a large road engine like the 261. I hope one day I could see the 261 in operation mayself. Go Army NG!

  • I cry when I see trains!

  • @tcarr22239 And its just as unforgettable(if not more so) when you see a steam engine like the 3985 on a freight train or see UP 844 blasting down the main line at 80 mph with a passenger train. sadly, i've only seen them in a video.

  • @Fireheart528 Unfortunately because of the expense and gov. regulations of maintaining and running steam locomotives many organizations are retiring them as a static display. One day all that will be left for people to see them running will be the archives of videos that people have shot.

  • @tcarr22239 Government are a bunch of stuck-ups bc they only care about the money and themselves. I would almost put this as my ringtone for my cell phone bc that whistle is the best I've ever heard. Should put something like that on my car/truck when i get one.

  • @tcarr22239 Not if my crew and I have anything to say about it.

  • @Armywife110907

I hope that your 2 yr old (5 now obviously!!) has had many chances to ride behind a steam engine, especially a coal fired steam engine. One of the greatest things that man has made. ^_^

  • the 1522 is owened by the city of st louis its on display on of these days they have a mayor that is a railfan just this weekend me and my son was in the cab

  • That is so delightful to hear, Who is the Mayor?

  • Bell happy much?

God I miss both of those engines.

  • but its a good thought knowing they're safe in a musiem instead of being unleashed to the elements

  • I got to see 1522 the day before it was re-retired. I really miss that engine on the mainline.

  • Very nice!!

  • Wow!! I'm glad I found this. A video with the old 611 that's here in our transportation museum. It's a bummer that I never got to see it run before they stopped it in 1994 I think. Like I said in a post on another video it now sits rusting with the other engines. They are in bad need of money and our city crooked won't help them but will donate 3 million to build a new art museum. I be O'l Winston Link is spinning in his grave.

  • absolutely stunning !

  • 1522 is my favorite steamer....I want them to bring her back into service....

  • nice whistle

  • I rode the 1522 on the WC up to Fond du Lac a few years back. She hauled a very long train of cars up a grade at Horicon WI with ease. That whistle is awesome- especially at speed in a runby.

Too bad her and 611 both are now mothballed: I'd love my kids to see them run some day.

  • me and a friend of mine are gonna lead an effort to restore the NS steam program. Maybe we can hire your kids to be engineers on the steam engine(s) and by that were gonna restore more then just the 611. Were gonna restore the 1218, 4501, T&P 610, PRR 6855, K4 3751 and others

  • 3751 is a Santa Fe 4-8-4, not a K4

  • im talking about the K4 in the railroad museum of Pennsylvania in Lancaster. I think its numbered 3751.

  • o ok

  • 3750 is the number of the K4 and the museum is not in Lancaster it is in Strasburg which is in Lancaster county. 3751 as mjkft22 said is a Santa Fe 4-8-4. I know that because I have been lucky enough to see it in action. I was also lucky enough to ride on the excursion train it ran on to San Diego last summer.

  • funny that the bell was swinging over and over

  • the k4 at strasburg is 3750

  • The thing I love best about steam engine is the way they seem to breath, the 611 has a good example of that here.

  • haha is the bell supposed to being flips?

  • yup

    thats how they work

  • Actually, it's swinging over and over, instead of back and forth...that's not how it works, the fireman got a little wild with it.

  • Ashame that both engines are no longer running

611 was retired just 6 months after this, while 1522 ran for another 8 years

  • I regret that I did not have a video camera in the early 80's. I could only afford a 35mm camera. As soon as I can I will post the last trip of the "J" from Birmingham.

  • wow i would love to see that J trip vid!

I was 5 when the J last came through Richmond, VA

don't remember much (sadly) except my dad daring me to stand close to the track and then having the whistle scare the crap out of me

  • well if that accident in Lynchburg Va didnt happen then the NS program would still be running today. If you can invent a time machine (very unlikly) to go back in time and to prevent that accident from never happening you'll have to settle for videos and pictures

  • I've been working on a time machine for the last 40 something years, (shaa don't tell everyone). My machine's clock has been stuck on Daylights Savings Time and I can't go nowhere but only into the future. Darn!!!

  • Great Scott! I guess you can call it the Back to the Future machine instead of a go back in time machine. lol

  • Wasn't there a movie by that name! I, II, III, IV, V, and so on. lol.

  • yea there was lol

  • 611 was on borrowed time then. 1522 i think ran for another 5 years being reretired in 1999

  • 1522 was retired in late 2002.

  • 'Hear that lonesome whistle blow!' Who came up with a sound that would make the average cowpuncher out on the range feel sad down to his boots?! Kind of emotional stuff, eh?

  • Too bad both of these engines are now in museums instead of on the high iron

  • To me, especially the 611!

  • I agree. My father and brother were chasing the 611, 1218 and my dad's favorite, the 765!! I love the 611!!

  • The Frisco rest a few miles from where I live! Great to see it in action again!

  • Great video, esp interesting to see the N&W loco.

  • Wonderful video love those engines!!

  • My grandfather engined this type of train. Thank you SOOOOOO much!
