So beautiful.........and though it's difficult to type through these tears, I wanted to say thank you for the post!! I lost my copy of this movie whenI lost the love of my life........so, thank you.
I always have great reverence to songwriters. But this is Teddys own as far as interpretation goes. This is one special voice, for me nothing better has come out of Nashville. Be sure to listen to his "She thinks I still care" live from glasgow.
Great interpretation of a great song; for the doubters out there, it is always interesting to hear what Leonard Cohen has to say about reworking of his songs. All of the performers in this tribute show get big wraps from LC. You have to remember these are all long term friends, associates and collaborators of Leonard who know his work intimately. Thank you Teddy.
Imagine growing up in the Thompson household......Your Mum+Dad are singer.songwriters....there's music all around you....It don't get any better than that
Para mi Cohen es un genio tanto componiendo como cantando, pero esta versión quizá me guste más que el original porque este chico sube y baja la entonación de su voz de una manera que pone los pelos de punta. Gracias por subir este genial vídeo.
I posted a version of this a couple of months back - nothing like this, but it does show the chords and lyrics. My version is without a capo. Hope this helps.

me too also! Cannot get enough, have yet to find a cover that he cannot sing beautifully... seeing him live at The Ironworks in Inverness on the 28th this month..there's still tickets ppl!! Go see him live, total genius!
@fek2000 Yes I agree, that's the version that stays in the mind longest I feel. The album this came from is superb......a real tribute to a legend....as Bono says: "A rare talent" Go get the DVD......Gives a great insight to Cohen.....Love That Guy!
This song reminds me of the one who got away. Now two years removed I still think about her, and I know I'll always love her. In fact I can truly say she's the only one I've ever truly loved.
I saw "I'm Your Man" in the theaters about four years ago with her, and this was our favorite part. Beautifully done by a very talented artist.
The more I hear this song the more I like it ... nice to see Julie Christensen doing backup on this song. She has come far from her girl days growing up in Newton, Iowa.
When I first heard this, heard Thompson sing it. He does a great job and is better in delivery than Cohen. But the reason we love Cohen is for simple phrases like this: "Tonight will be fine for a while." Usually, a while of fine is all we get. Some writers, like Cohen, get to the essence of reality, and they do it with disarming simplicity and honesty.
Super version of this song ... it stopped me in my tracks the first time I saw it performed on Cohen's "I'm Your Man" DVD. I kept backing up and playing it over and over.
The disciple surpasses the master in this rendition of Leonard COHEN's Tonight Will Be Fine, he clearly does. Whatever the latter's talent, of whom I am an unconditional admirer. Teddy THOMPSON's performance seems consensual. What bliss !
Is there anywhere a better songwriter, better lyricist than Mr Cohen? My first love has always been a fine vocalist and thats probably why I never really listened to Cohen before. A "fine " vocalist he is not. Thank God for the artists like Teddy , who have taken his songs and interpreted them for us. Thanks for post this video, a fine performance.
@Mannati A "better" songwriter? Depends on your preferences. But... if you want one with equal or even better skills with words, PLUS a greater range of musical genres, PLUS a great sense of humor, PLUS a better voice, PLUS guitar playing of the highest order... it would be difficult to find one better than Teddy's father, Richard Thompson.
hoy se confabulo todo para sentirme tan mal , espero solo la caida de este viejo amanecer y que me pueda brindar un poco de luz porque este ardor de la sal de este agua me esta dejando corto de vista , recuerdo y extraño tantas cosas ..
Amazing, I always thought the song is bitter, it sounded this way by Leonard Cohen. Teddy Thompson gave interpretation of unique love with his wonderful voice. thanks.
@Doritify - not bitter -- "You kept right on loving, I went on a fast - now I'm too thin and your love is too vast." The song's author felt inadequate to the giver, and then later sorry for the results. Cohen's original seems to hide behind a fear of being too vulnerable... then Teddy came along with the added message - "you set the stage, Leonard, and we've since been freer to sing what we really feel." This version is a great tribute as well as a better effect.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this version is whack. the guitar is basic and the singing is no good. he did this song no justice at all. not a tiny bit. leonard's version sends a tingle down my spine. this version makes me want to turn it off as quickly as possible.
much to the contrary, is one of the few covers that actually improves the original, which is kinda stale, 60s folk by the numbers really. he brings new life to the song, just as if mr.cohen's version was only a sketch, something to work with. and i'm definitely an utmost fan of leonard cohen.cheers
I love his version soooo much. I especially like the rehearsal version in the special features of the movie. Actually brought a tear to my eye. After hearing him perform on the Cohen tribute, I went out and bought two of Teddy's albums.
Teddy's got a great voice, I'm going to the Albert Hall , London on the 9th December 2009 to Not So Silent Night--Rufus Wainwright's xmas concert, I understand Teddy is a guest there.
Singing backup is Julie Christansen, who alog with Perla Batalla baacked up LC for many years. She's a wonderful singer. Check out Joan of Arc here on YOuTube.
Too slow for my taste. Leonard's version is much more upbeat and humorous. And LC holds the pause much longer between the words "will be fine" and "for a while", which makes it more ironic and tongue in the cheek.
I couldn't agree more. When Leonard does this song it's fun and humorous. It's sad when someone takes an upbeat, tongue in cheek song by LC and turns it into something so depressing. LC has done his share of sad songs. It's just not right to turn one of the lighthearted ones into a durge.
this is the best song of that documentary although the whole thing is awsome you can get it off of the pirate bay if you have problems you can email me

thanks for replying, i just watched I'm your Man on sundance channel, but i wondered if leonard put the song out on a cd i am happy i discovered this young man he is great and the song is so beautiful, thanks again
Rent the DVD this came from, Leonard Cohen, I'm Your Man. There is a rehearsal version of Teddy doing this song that is even better and more emotional than this version. It will knock your socks off!
You guys.....I love all of Leonard Cohens songs.....I'm not saying this song is depressing! And I love Teddys voice. What I'm saying is I've listened to the lyrics of the songs that Teddy WRITES, and they make him sound like he's a depressed person.Listen to his songs on "Teddy Thompson"
This is a Leonard Cohen song, one of the greatest songwriters/poets that ever lived. I don't think this song was meant to be depressing at all... beautiful BEAUTIFUL cover by Teddy Thomson.
Love Teddy - very talented man! Thank you!

Anyone have any idea what chords he's playing? I know he's using a Capo fret second fret. Can't make out the chords though.

To me leonard has the "Golden voice" Teddy's is platinum.

Amazing. Much different than Leonard sang it, but I'm sure he had a wow moment when he heard Teddy's interpretation.
My newest favorite Cohen song 40 years later.

Does anyone know if that's Linda,Teddy's mother, singing behind Teddy?
smokeytopez 3 years ago
Yes, it is Linda.

What I'm saying is I've listened to the lyrics of the songs that Teddy WRITES, and they make him sound like he's a depressed person.Listen to his songs on "Teddy Thompson"
smokeytopez 3 years ago
This is a Leonard Cohen song, one of the greatest songwriters/poets that ever lived. I don't think this song was meant to be depressing at all... beautiful BEAUTIFUL cover by Teddy Thomson.
