  • Love Teddy - very talented man! Thank you!

  • But I know from your eyes

and I know from your smile

    that tonight will be fine,

will be fine, will be fine, will be fine

    for a while.

Maldito Leonard!!!!!!! Qué haces para que escribir versos que remueven muchos dolores enterrados?

  • So beautiful.........and though it's difficult to type through these tears, I wanted to say thank you for the post!! I lost my copy of this movie whenI lost the love of my life........so, thank you.

  • I always have great reverence to songwriters. But this is Teddys own as far as interpretation goes. This is one special voice, for me nothing better has come out of Nashville. Be sure to listen to his "She thinks I still care" live from glasgow.

  • me too I stil watch all the videos from Lenard Cohen tribute

  • i still go back to this video after 4 years

  • Beautiful rendition

  • From which album is it?

  • @m1cab "I'm Your Man" (Tribute to Leonard Cohen)

  • Stupid but beautiful song transformed by the incomparable Teddy Thompson who makes it soundl like real poetry.

  • Great interpretation of a great song; for the doubters out there, it is always interesting to hear what Leonard Cohen has to say about reworking of his songs. All of the performers in this tribute show get big wraps from LC. You have to remember these are all long term friends, associates and collaborators of Leonard who know his work intimately. Thank you Teddy.

  • guy I will always love you. I wish it were not such a sad memory. I wish we were happy together everyday.

  • Great rendition-sadly, Teddy Thompson's own album B.ella was a great disappointment .Country? What a waste of such a beautiful, soulful voice.

  • wonderful!thank you leonard for a GREAT song!you are genius as always!

  • Beautiful song. Amazing singer!

  • I agree with Nicomadriz!

  • I love this! However, nothing will EVER compare to Leonard Cohen

  • Very beautiful, deep, nuanced, wow

  • Imagine growing up in the Thompson household......Your Mum+Dad are singer.songwriters....there's music all around you....It don't get any better than that

  • Preciosa Musica, cancion Excelente.

  • it's brilliant!!! I love the song

    Syde

  • Can anyone tell me what chord he plays after the chorus, before he goes back to the verse?

It looks like its somewhere around the fith fret

  • Hi.

I posted a version of this a couple of months back - nothing like this, but it does show the chords and lyrics. My version is without a capo. Hope this helps.

  • i love this song! <3

  • guy, I will always love you

  • This song and the voice of Teddy make me so weak... goosebumps!

  • @MsEekhoorn Background check = OK! This way of making your spare time usefull is acceptable.

  • me too also! Cannot get enough, have yet to find a cover that he cannot sing beautifully... seeing him live at The Ironworks in Inverness on the 28th this month..there's still tickets ppl!! Go see him live, total genius!

  • This man has a wonderful voice....looking forward to seeing him live at the Barbican, in February.

  • Love the old mans laughter in the beginning... It is so joyful:)

  • @Stewerrvideos

    It's Leonard Cohen.

  • @mondo4422 Okay ^-^

  • Teddy Thompson is a brilliant performer. If any of you out there get the chance....go and see him live.Up there with the best.

  • Just gorgeous....

  • @ropavejero ...et en français ça va ?

merci à vous, c'est beau et émouvant

  • Gracias por el video.. No me canso de verlo <3

  • Bellísima interpretación <3

  • gracias tio es muy bueno

  • The backstage warm-up he did of this--also on YouTube--is better, if you can believe it!!

  • @fek2000 Yes I agree, that's the version that stays in the mind longest I feel. The album this came from is superb......a real tribute to a legend....as Bono says: "A rare talent" Go get the DVD......Gives a great insight to Cohen.....Love That Guy!

  • @fek2000 Yes, I agree, thats the one that lingers so beautifully in the mind.

I agree too with the comment that Cohen sings it as a slightly "bitter" song, but Teddy, brings out a true loving adoration in the words. Brilliant.

I'm a lifelong Cohen Fan........This Film was a true heartfelt tribute to a Genius

  • goose bumps!

  • bueeeena excelente la letra!!! es una excelente voz y se acompaña muy bien con el rítmo folk/country.... muy buena!!!

  • This song reminds me of the one who got away. Now two years removed I still think about her, and I know I'll always love her. In fact I can truly say she's the only one I've ever truly loved.

I saw "I'm Your Man" in the theaters about four years ago with her, and this was our favorite part. Beautifully done by a very talented artist.

    Love is a bitch!

  • @Stereophonics81 go back & tell her; do you want to remember her for 20 or 30 years?

  • @stjulienlepauvre - Too late for that. Such is life.

  • A very good copy loved by leonard his self

  • This version destroys me. I've been in love like this before.

  • The more I hear this song the more I like it ... nice to see Julie Christensen doing backup on this song. She has come far from her girl days growing up in Newton, Iowa.

  • best ever cover of a l.cohen song.

  • awesome version.

  • An awesome version, even Leonard Cohen said he loved it.

  • This is, without question, my favorite cover of any song by any artist. The song is a masterpiece and artist's interpretation is outstanding.

    My fave.

  • @HBobHobby I like this a lot. But try Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt."

  • fantasticccccccc... love this so much!

  • Saw this guy in 95 supporting Martha that voice to this day been never matched truly an amazing performer.

  • When I first heard this, heard Thompson sing it. He does a great job and is better in delivery than Cohen. But the reason we love Cohen is for simple phrases like this: "Tonight will be fine for a while." Usually, a while of fine is all we get. Some writers, like Cohen, get to the essence of reality, and they do it with disarming simplicity and honesty.

  • still amazing after sooo many years..

  • Super version of this song ... it stopped me in my tracks the first time I saw it performed on Cohen's "I'm Your Man" DVD. I kept backing up and playing it over and over.

  • The disciple surpasses the master in this rendition of Leonard COHEN's Tonight Will Be Fine, he clearly does. Whatever the latter's talent, of whom I am an unconditional admirer. Teddy THOMPSON's performance seems consensual. What bliss !

  • I dont understand why Nashville hasnt beaten down this guys door. He could write his own ticket in Nashville. Great talent

  • Is there anywhere a better songwriter, better lyricist than Mr Cohen? My first love has always been a fine vocalist and thats probably why I never really listened to Cohen before. A "fine " vocalist he is not. Thank God for the artists like Teddy , who have taken his songs and interpreted them for us. Thanks for post this video, a fine performance.

  • @Mannati A "better" songwriter? Depends on your preferences. But... if you want one with equal or even better skills with words, PLUS a greater range of musical genres, PLUS a great sense of humor, PLUS a better voice, PLUS guitar playing of the highest order... it would be difficult to find one better than Teddy's father, Richard Thompson.

  • if i've got to remember... that's a fine memory...

  • hoy se confabulo todo para sentirme tan mal , espero solo la caida de este viejo amanecer y que me pueda brindar un poco de luz porque este ardor de la sal de este agua me esta dejando corto de vista , recuerdo y extraño tantas cosas ..

  • I love this so much.

  • aaaah

  • The song fits Teddy like a glove. He does a great job of it. He lifts the song to new heights with great tenderness.

  • Amazing, I always thought the song is bitter, it sounded this way by Leonard Cohen. Teddy Thompson gave interpretation of unique love with his wonderful voice. thanks.

  • @Doritify - not bitter -- "You kept right on loving, I went on a fast - now I'm too thin and your love is too vast." The song's author felt inadequate to the giver, and then later sorry for the results. Cohen's original seems to hide behind a fear of being too vulnerable... then Teddy came along with the added message - "you set the stage, Leonard, and we've since been freer to sing what we really feel." This version is a great tribute as well as a better effect.

  • obeyluciano, I understand. Raw talent is sometimes hard to accept at first.

  • much to the contrary, is one of the few covers that actually improves the original, which is kinda stale, 60s folk by the numbers really. he brings new life to the song, just as if mr.cohen's version was only a sketch, something to work with. and i'm definitely an utmost fan of leonard cohen.cheers

  • Exactly!

  • I agree Hunter172!

I just heard this for the first time tonight and it was so powerful, I felt like I was punched in the chest!

    Incredible performance Teddy. :)

    -Peace

  • I think Leonard wrote this for Teddy to sing, he just didn't know it.

  • Love the way he sings this song...fell in love with it, and him all at once.

  • beauiful song

  • Thanks very much! :)) *

  • Teddy, why such a long face? Tonight will be fine...for a while.

  • Preciosa canción e interpretación!!! Gracias por subirla!!! :)

  • Awesome - thanks so much for uploading this vid. Can anyone recommend a good Teddy Thompson live CD?

  • I love his version soooo much. I especially like the rehearsal version in the special features of the movie. Actually brought a tear to my eye. After hearing him perform on the Cohen tribute, I went out and bought two of Teddy's albums.

  • Teddy's got a great voice, I'm going to the Albert Hall , London on the 9th December 2009 to Not So Silent Night--Rufus Wainwright's xmas concert, I understand Teddy is a guest there.

  • Singing backup is Julie Christansen, who alog with Perla Batalla baacked up LC for many years. She's a wonderful singer. Check out Joan of Arc here on YOuTube.

  • Love this version, LC might be more up beat but this is no durge.

  • Teddy's rendition of this LC tune is the best thing i have heard in a long time. Makes me want to cry it is so fine.

  • This version is great and Teddy puts his personal stamp on the song with genuine feeling for the lyrics and the tune.

  • This is just Teddy's style. I like it when people put their own touch to other's songs. Otherwise it's just karaoke.

  • Muchas gracias por los subtitulos. Claros y puestos en tiempo. Chapeau!

  • Beautiful version

  • If I tear up just about every time I watch this video, does that mean I really lke it. I'd say yes.

  • Too slow for my taste. Leonard's version is much more upbeat and humorous. And LC holds the pause much longer between the words "will be fine" and "for a while", which makes it more ironic and tongue in the cheek.

  • I couldn't agree more. When Leonard does this song it's fun and humorous. It's sad when someone takes an upbeat, tongue in cheek song by LC and turns it into something so depressing. LC has done his share of sad songs. It's just not right to turn one of the lighthearted ones into a durge.

  • This version is more lugubrious--but I still think that the original version is painful and poinant, even if the tune is more upbeat.

  • this version is a lot better when it's just audio. i agree, he's a little painful to watch. i have the CD and love it.

  • Just a wonderful rendition....and his backing vocals are velvet!!! Love it!!!

  • Thank you Leonard Cohen

  • Not only a great performance of a beautiful song but a real aid to anyone wanting to learn some Spanish!

  • This song is amazing, but the documentary has a bit too much Wainwright content for my liking...

  • "too much Wainwright content"

    No Such Thing! Ha!

  • Amen brotha!

  • i love that version of the song.

  • I still think this is the best version!

  • Wait, does Teddy's shirt read, "Like Father, Like Son"?

    Awesome.

  • also check out IF IT BE YOUR WILL by ANTONY

  • this is the best song of that documentary although the whole thing is awsome you can get it off of the pirate bay if you have problems you can email me

  • I would like to know how to get songs (videos?) off the pirate bay

  • What is the pirate bay?

I can tell you how to abtract them from you tube or a torrent file.

  • It's from a documentary about Leonard Cohen, it's called "I'm Your Man". There is also a CD available, called "I'm Your Fan" i think :-)

  • "Im your fan" is a tribute-album (from 1991), and not a very good one compared to the performances on "Im your man"...

  • my favorite performance from the film! so bautiful...

  • Hi,

This is perfect!!! Is this song on DVD or CD?

If not, can i download this performance somewhere? If this guy goes on he could reach Jackson Browne or even (after 40 years :=) Bob Dylan.

  • "If this guy goes on he could reach Jackson Browne or even (after 40 years :=) Bob Dylan."

    Or his dad, Richard.

  • me too! i was like, "wait, what's the title again?"....hahaha

  • This is a completely staggering performance. There's a bunch of great stuff in that film, but for some reason this is the one that has stuck with me.

    Wow.

  • somehow,. this and every performance,. reminds me on Cole Porter,. especially this song,. and then "If it will be your will " by Antony,. Cohen opens up for interpretation every one of his songs,. just like Cole Porter did,. or Chelsea Hotel by Rufus,. I think Cohens music will live for quite some times

  • does anyone know the chords he's playing?

  • I watched this documentary a few months ago and have been haunted by this song/performance ever since. This performance makes me want to marry Teddy Thompson and then drift apart from him so he can sing this song to me. Sigh. Beautiful piece.

  • Teddy is the son of the great Richard Thompson, seems to have inherited some of them talent-genes.

  • Très joli, mieux que la version originale, mais le merite revient à Léonard Cohen.

  • This version is even better than the original! It gives me the chills. Beautiful.

  • The chills are just the beginning. Absolutely awesome! That is if you really enjoy passionate music.

  • the version on the official soundtrack is not quite as good. it's a bit overproduced and his vocal lines are a bit different. it's still good, but this one is better. or maybe i just think that because i've listened to this a zillion times and am accustomed to it.

  • what a beautifull performance! really moving!

  • This version for me is better than the original, and the original is great

  • wow this man is fantastic what a song carnt stop playing it thanks for posting it

  • Just found this - it's brilliant. Found out Teddy is supporting James Blunt at his concert in Sheffield in October. Can't wait to see both of them now!!

  • All that I can say is Wow! what a phenomenal song and what an awsome singer!!!

  • teddy thompson's soul purpose on this earth is to sing that song. what an amazing choice to have him perform it. such an extraordinary concert this was.

  • so beat down, so beautiful!

  • Teddy Thompson came in to our studio this morning. Check out my page for the videos.

  • durante un rato. Thank you.

  • I randomly watched the DVD "Im your man" one night I couldn't sleep and this song came directly all the way to my top 5 musical experience. Good Job Teddy !!!!

  • me too

  • Yeah, I'm going to put this into top two Leonard Cohen covers in my book. This one for interpretation, craft and skill.

The other is Sting and the Chieftans on Sisters of Mercy, for originality and sheer fun.

  • OMG! What a soulful voice. Great musicality and control. I came across Teddy's while looking for Richard Thompson youtube. Great contribution you have made, Sir Richard. Thank you.

  • Anyone have any idea what chords he's playing? I know he's using a Capo fret second fret. Can't make out the chords though.

  • To me leonard has the "Golden voice" Teddy's is platinum.

  • Amazing. Much different than Leonard sang it, but I'm sure he had a wow moment when he heard Teddy's interpretation.

My newest favorite Cohen song 40 years later.

  • tower of song... is the best one for me.

although this one is beautifur too.

  • this was the best part of the movie

  • I find Teddy's version even better than Cohen's and I am a huge Cohen fan.

  • which cd is this song from?????

    beautiful song!!!!!

  • this is from the Leonard Cohen Documentary "I'm Your Man."

  • thanks for replying, i just watched I'm your Man on sundance channel, but i wondered if leonard put the song out on a cd i am happy i discovered this young man he is great and the song is so beautiful, thanks again

  • Yea, I think even L Cohen would admit Teddy Thompson owned the song.

  • i like this version better than the original.

  • He's cute too!

  • SOO cute!

  • I love this song! is the best version in really

  • Thanks a bunch! I intend to buy it and watch it over and over! This is the best version of this song...

  • Does anyone know where I can find the DVD zenboy23 mentioned?

  • It's on the DVD "I'm your Man" in the bonus features. Hope you get yourself a copy!

  • I like better the rehearsal version from the DVD than the live take

  • Perfect rendition - the best! Go Teddy Thompson!

  • Thank you.I thought it was.I too thought the rehearsal was emotional.

  • Does anyone know if that's Linda,Teddy's mother, singing behind Teddy?

  • Yes, it is Linda.

Rent the DVD this came from, Leonard Cohen, I'm Your Man. There is a rehearsal version of Teddy doing this song that is even better and more emotional than this version. It will knock your socks off!

  • No it is not, it is Julie Christensen who backed Leonard Cohen with Perla Batalla for many years

  • Sorry.....Teddy Thompson "Separate Ways"

  • You guys.....I love all of Leonard Cohens songs.....I'm not saying this song is depressing! And I love Teddys voice. What I'm saying is I've listened to the lyrics of the songs that Teddy WRITES, and they make him sound like he's a depressed person.Listen to his songs on "Teddy Thompson"

  • This is a Leonard Cohen song, one of the greatest songwriters/poets that ever lived. I don't think this song was meant to be depressing at all... beautiful BEAUTIFUL cover by Teddy Thomson.
