@blarghblargh5 meh, ff7 was the first one from the transition from snes to playstation. the movies and graphics for final fantasy fans was enough to make their hair stand up... and the storyline was equally as impressive for it's time. i hardly would say it's overrated, it deserves the respect it gets. guess you'd just have to be a final fantasy fan to understand though.
@McScreamo That's not fair... I'm a huge fan of Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu, Chrono Trigger, and many other rpgs. I would have to strongly disagree with Final Fantasy being 'overrated' though... if that's what you are insinuating :) . I grew up with the Final Fantasy series and these other games... maybe if they would've made 15 Chrono Triggers or 15 Secret of Manas they would've been a bigger part of my life... unfortunately though, Square decided not to.
I love Seiken Densetsu 3; it was so different from other games. I loved how each character had their own personalities and had their own stories. Also I like how the story changes depending on the teammates you choose and that each character interacts with another. I had to play it 3 times to see the different interactions and different bosses on the characters you choose. To all you fans of this song. i found a really good video to sinc it too. look up "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon fight scene" and it's between two chicks. it goes very well with it.
@AFallenAngel91 It seems like a lot of people bash Evermore as a scapegoat for SD3 not getting released outside of Japan. I'd heard that Evermore had no impact on the reasons why SD3 wasn't exported, though. Wish I could cite a source, but I forget where I read this.
There's an interview on Hardcore Gaming with Ted Woosley, though, where he says 40% of Secret of Mana's translated script was stripped due to space issues; that removed "lots of story elements, nuance, personality," in his words.
The third song in the game (along with Meridian Child and Nuclear Fusion) that takes excerpts from Meridian Dance from SoM; in this case, the beginning of each song is the same.
I have to see a game that gets to have 6 characters with at least 2 of them having a fixed storyline and EACH. ONE. having an unique story, motivations, ambitions, dreams and even relationships depending of what characters you choose to play with...
Secret of Mana 2, or better say, Seiken Densetsu 3 was and is still one of my favorite RPGs.
It's just sad to see most of games nowadays lost their bright thanks to people who value graphics over a good story or gameplay... Meh.
One thing i dont understand is why so many rpg fans fight over this one is better than this one I loved most of the games in this list and FF7 for all the criticism it gets, I mostly hear it being criticized for being popular, well its a different try to make a narrative of an epic story unlike previous 6 FF making it move in a more dinamic fashion and it did have a lot of graphic appeal but the feeling behind every character and place is at FF lvl and thats saying a lot (7 not my fav) still <3
@TailsSilver This music played when you fight the final boss (depending on your main character). This is almost close to the end of the game. This part is where you fight the final boss.
It's the final boss theme. There are three possible final bosses. Dark Lich is the final boss for Charlotte and Kevin, the Dragon Emperor is the final boss for Angela and Duran, and the Archdemon is the final boss for Lise and Hawkeye.
Kingdom Hearts: actualy isn't bad if you ask me, it's not a typicall RPG, more like a action adventure with exp- and equipment-interface of RPG's, but it's still a good story with some nice characters and all. Music ain't bad either. Not a masterpiece like this but, still good.
@kauyun cool; although i always keep hearing kh is the best game ever and it pisses me off. never even really liked the game. but all i know is that both get over-hype a lot
@McScreamo as much as a big kh fan as i am, i really have to agree with you.. ff7 i really never care for, since i lost interest in it after advent children. the thing about kh that pisses me off is the yaoi and the fangirls.... they make me want to kill myself. and yes, both games are nowhere near as good as this one :D
@lastblade3 lol for FF7 they should have just stayed with the 3 disc playstation original instead of firing movie tributes, sequals, prequels and all that useless shit xD !!
@McScreamo thats because most retards only care about the graphics now and days. Ive played dozens of good ol rpgs that were never notice due to the lack of advertisiing and suppose ground breaking graphics. As long as the storyline empresses me I'd consider it a good game. Sadely no 3d ground breaking graphics means udder crap to most new age gamers.
@McScreamo agreed. this game though, seiken 3, wasnt released in america so its impossible for it to be rated. the common american wouldnt bother going through the trouble of getting the DeJap rom.
To be honest, most RPG are underrated, even ther likes of Final Fantasy 7, that are very popular RPGs, get dawrfed down by the popularity of tons of FPSs and shitty rpgs like Pokemon...
However, the entire video game industry is underrated when compared to the movie and music industry...
@BinaryDood While movies and music are enjoyable for everyone, videogames only appeal to a certain sector of the population, and then RPGs only appeal to a narrow sub sector of that, which is not bad actually, just look at what the rising popularity of videogames has done to their quality in the past decade.
@McScreamo if they make a Remake of them, the classics series of [Secret of] from the Snes or any from the 4ºGen from above, they could EVEN surpass ff7 and KH, for example: I reeeealy hope to play FF6 on WiiU or PS VITA man..
This game was amazing, all the sountrack were really good and they all fit on whatever you are doing, if the battle is intense or quick( like the battle of those 2 ninjas who i forgot the names) the music is the same, if the battle is mysterious, the music follows. Now days most of the RPG now are quite the same thing or same cliches lol.
Long live Seiken Densetsu 3!!!! The best game ever!!!!!!! I hope they remake this game and release it in US and Europe!!!! I bet 13 people likes to play Halo and Modern Warfare instead of classical video games which is ridiculously stupid....
@jeremy9210 interesting remake of the song, i still prefer the original though :p
I really hope there will be a remake version of the game. despite how much the game is worth replaying, i really wished the storyline could be extended further, and many bugs fixed, like the defense cap, evasion, and shield

@Taranis501 LMAO walking up to your wife and making out with this is crazy awesome!!! Can i please be your best man? Ill jump through the window calling out your wifes name to "High Tension Wire!!!" and land to the game over music in this game!
Is it just me or am I reminded of Kirby's Underground Adventure (Or something like that.) I just remember that I got a ginormous kick outta that game as a kid, and this boss music really reminds me of the boss battle themes for that game. :/
My last boss battle was epic in this game I was about to die and then this song started to play so that let me no the boss was almost dead I heard this music and I just went hard at the boss I had everyone doin they special attacks until it died.
Your point is well made. With all the time they put into games like FFXIII (which I'm playing as soon as I get back to the states...) they need to make the most out of it. I guess what I'm hoping for is a small developer to make a break-away hit that appeals to old school gamers from the early/mid 90s. I'd be such a happy guy.
Often I reserve my comments but this is a song that deserves credit. Also @Zyel21, I somewhat agree. In the old days music did set a huge theme for games, but good graphics, which SD3 had, also set the theme quite well. There is no question however in regards to this piece and what it conveys. Final battle in SD3, a huge, epic game, tons of things going on, massive save the world fight... Yeah it needed amazing music and it got just that.
@dragon0085 There are a few good SNES emulators out there with the fan translated version, since the game never got release outside of Japan officially...such a shame to be honest.
omg i'm soo glad one of seiken densetsu 3 made the top 3 but i' not sure this was the best theme song in the game but it's been too long since i've played
it is! i think that they got really cool final battles and really diffrent ones from other games. You have three final bosses one of them is the dragon emporor which are ok but the two others are really badass! They are called Dark lich and Archdemon and they will appear if you choose a certain character in the beggining.
this one should have been number 1.... I like this one because it just gets you in the mood for a battle... number 1 sounds like some music you play when someone died -.-
This song is really catchy! It's really sound «this is the final step!» Now we can't heard composition like this anymore... I would like to heard some good song like this again on the new video game!
Anyway, thanks for uploading it! I really love this song I finished the game yesterday just to listen to it :)
This tune has great effect when you're fighting the Archdemon because of how he changes into his totally awesome final form different from the other two possible final bosses... Man, I remember when I heard this one for the first time, that was some epic game, and it's music (despite being the 16bit era) nothing short from amazing.
i just finished this game for like the 5th time yesterday, i did duran's quest... for some reason i never did his, i did arch demon and dark lick twice, after this, i'm gonna make anggela the heroine
the feeling in the final boss when this song begins and you hear it for the very first time... its so fucking INVIGORATING! an excellent final boss song, and a very good choice in your Top 100
This and Rolling Cradle were my two favorite boss themes on this soundtrack. This one is epic and well composed for something that was back on the SNES, while the Rolling Cradle was just energetic and got you going in the rather fun battle it plays in.
Japan doesn't hate us lol. This was a release for the Super Falcom thus our SNES but Square and Nintendo fight had already started and any Square made games were put on hold in the US between negotiations which shortly after Square had turned their back on Nintendo and went ot Sony - there's nothing Japan could have done to get it released in the States.
Not only that, but this game, despite how fun it was, had some pretty ugly bugs/glitches in it. Buggy games usually didn't get shipped globally either. Even if the game was fun enough to overlook them.
If anything, Europe would be hated for not getting gold like Chrono Trigger until the DS release. Haha... >_>
God damn I hate it when the Japanese do not release some of their best games over here. I am thankful for what we have gotten (ie Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Persona games, the more Japanese-y stuff that would not have a clear chance of selling well like Mario would--eh, sorry Earthbound...), but the fact that they keep this secret of Mana sequel (excuse me if that's wrong) and a game like Mother 3 from us is just bemusing to me. ESPECIALLY Mother 3--have they seen its crazy fan base in the US?
LOL i feel the EXACT same way as you!!! Like the snes remakes of DQs 1-3??? and then 5 and 6??? Also FFs 2, 3, AND 5??? And of course lotsa other games too!!! Just cant come up with them at the moment........but yea and NOW that good games are less common they can send everything to us???
For a very old Snes game with not just epic and legendary music but with high replay value. You got to owe this to square and maybe they can make a remake of this or another Secret of Mana that is like this one.
I'm pissed that they still haven't released this game in the US. They unload crap like Children of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 4 on us, but leave us in the cold with this one. I'd rather have it on a console than a portable because of multiplayer, but I doubt they'd go through the effort of translating it. They should just pay the fan-translator and sell it on a disc with another Square classic.
Actually man, I played it on PC and loved it. I just with they officially released it over here. I'd really like to play it with a controller and on a TV screen.
Even so I didn't enjoy it as much as Secret of Mana because of the changes to combat - I dislike the button mashing, preferred the 100% charge mechanic and critical attacks.
sorry, replies arent working. that was meant for the guy saying that square censored sex scenes in this game. I find that hard to believe for some reason. Anyways, yea I listened to the song all the way through, wow! absolutely incredible. This is definitely one of the best game songs ive ever heard. at 0:59 it goes from bein good to incredible, and then again at 1:25 it gets raised to EPIC!
I absolutely agree! I dont know why, but developers just arent putting the same effort into the music... or maybe its because theyve moved on too much from the "video game" style of music and gone for this crap realistic type music we can hear on an every day basis if we want to. The old school RPG music is just so much more catchy than most of todays stuff. Ive never played this game but this is an incredible song, one of the better themes ive heard.
I believe that with the less powerful graphics, the music definitely played a much larger role in conveying the emotion and intensity in old rpgs. Nowadays, developers seem to bank on their high graphics invoking the emotions and feelings.
I absolutely agree with you skins. I think we need to go back through a revival of some of the old games. I wish a developer had the balls to go and make a compelling modern rpg with a retro feel to it for all of us purists.
You are right. We rarely see soundtrack as epic as this one, CT or Lufia II.
Now all we see is Sakuraba. I love this guy, but too much and they all feel alike now. His works on Baten Kaitos and Tales of Symphonia were awesome, but now I feel like I'm hearing remixes of Baten Kaitos' soundtrack everywhere O.O
Ok late response but I do agree with all u said there. The main problem for companies is that when they spend more time creating everything in hi-res 3D they want to make it as mass-appealing to everyone, if they don't they fear they miss out on alot of potential buyers, and that means a loss for them. (Hint: look at FF13)
@nisbahmumtaz909 Never messed with the PSP although I know that quite a few classics are there. It'd be a good idea to go a borrow one so I can play those. I'll have to look into that game if/when I borrow a PSP.
@Chlero I played 3D-Dot Game Heroes and loved it. SO many awesome references. I did give up on it when I couldn't get that ridiculous dash stuff down. Block defense was fun though.
@TempestDacine That sounds like a really interesting idea and story concept. If/when I get my hands on a 360 I'll definitely check that out. Right now I'm replaying Chrono Trigger for all the endings. Oh the good ole days... sigh. XD
@BWEEBLAST FFXIII was interesting, but overall a fail. With all the sidequests and challenges in the later FF series, no strategy guide covered them all; however, FFXIII's guide did cover them all... because there's like only 2 sidequests. :(
Paradigm shifting = annoying
God I miss Nobuo Uematsu as well. Out of FFXIII I only liked about 3 songs. Pretty to look at, but pretty shallow. I hated the story through most of the game, only at the end does it get a little better.
@BWEEBLAST No, Square Enix Company did not get rid of Nobuo Uematsu. He left Square Enix in 2004. Square Enix games just sucked comparing to old generation of Final Fantasy games and Squaresoft games from the 90s.
@AmazonessLise no, after nobuo left, he made his own game company called mistwalker, and they've only made two games, lost oddysey and blue dragon. here's a link to a lost oddysey sound track. /watch?v=xZX5yRvBblA
@lastblade3 Is Lost Oddesey and Blue Dragon as good as old generation of Final Fantasy games and Mana games like Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3?
@lastblade3 All right, thanks for telling me about what am I missing about Nobuo Uematsu! I hope I can play these games if I had time! I finally know about he made Mistwalker series! I hope it's as good as old Final Fantasy games (1-10), Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3! I'm going to give it a try!

The US releases for this team kinda annoyed me tbh,
Final Fantasy Adventure - Seiken Densetsu
Secret of Mana - Seiken Densetsu 2
Secret of Evermore - US compensation for not gettin Seiken densetsu 3
Evermore isnt a bad game by any means, but still would have preferred Seiken Densetsu 3, glitch infested and all. =( Zsnes ftw
Favorite is still 2 though =)

@Zeehoos
Amen. That was such a good game in all ways. I still need to go through and beat that perfectly. Thanks for pointing that out. :)
@timbo22475
Your point is well made. With all the time they put into games like FFXIII (which I'm playing as soon as I get back to the states...) they need to make the most out of it. I guess what I'm hoping for is a small developer to make a break-away hit that appeals to old school gamers from the early/mid 90s. I'd be such a happy guy.

would love to hear this with some real metal instruments. would kick butt.

@thisbarb
You need to be an experienced player for that :P But this team can be awesome end game.

Yeah it needed amazing music and it got just that.
timbo22475 1 year ago
@timbo22475 See my post on Zeehoos' reply.

Though I never played this, you can still feel the epic-ness that all SNES RPGs shared. Damn, good days back then.

@dragon0085 There are a few good SNES emulators out there with the fan translated version, since the game never got release outside of Japan officially...such a shame to be honest.

@ivamoses almost. #4 isn't quite top 3. =p
However, I don't really consider the actual #1 on this list, so in some sense, I guess it is #3.

Never played SD3, but it's very obvious that the composer didn't get fired after SoM. It sounds like a final battle theme. :)

@SeppelSquirrel never???? please play it! its worth playing it :D is one of the best rpgs out there :)
also has 3 different final bosses, depends of the characters you chose :)
so u have game for loooong time :)
saphi20 2 years ago
it is! i think that they got really cool final battles and really diffrent ones from other games. You have three final bosses one of them is the dragon emporor which are ok but the two others are really badass! They are called Dark lich and Archdemon and they will appear if you choose a certain character in the beggining.

Top 3 Seiken dentesu for me:
1. Final battle theme
2. Rolling cradle
3. God beast Dolan battle theme

Sigh... I can't believe how good this game is despite all the bugs in it. My favorite RPG on replayability alone.
Still remember how pumped up I got when this tracked kicked in on my first playthru (twas Dark Lich for me).

This song is really catchy! It's really sound «this is the final step!» Now we can't heard composition like this anymore... I would like to heard some good song like this again on the new video game!
Anyway, thanks for uploading it! I really love this song I finished the game yesterday just to listen to it :)
MrCoussin 2 years ago
This tune has great effect when you're fighting the Archdemon because of how he changes into his totally awesome final form different from the other two possible final bosses... Man, I remember when I heard this one for the first time, that was some epic game, and it's music (despite being the 16bit era) nothing short from amazing.

This and Rolling Cradle were my two favorite boss themes on this soundtrack. This one is epic and well composed for something that was back on the SNES, while the Rolling Cradle was just energetic and got you going in the rather fun battle it plays in.

Japan doesn't hate us lol. This was a release for the Super Falcom thus our SNES but Square and Nintendo fight had already started and any Square made games were put on hold in the US between negotiations which shortly after Square had turned their back on Nintendo and went ot Sony - there's nothing Japan could have done to get it released in the States.
operations1000 2 years ago

ESPECIALLY Mother 3--have they seen its crazy fan base in the US?

skwalll 2 years ago
For a very old Snes game with not just epic and legendary music but with high replay value. You got to owe this to square and maybe they can make a remake of this or another Secret of Mana that is like this one.
parlazente 2 years ago
I'm pissed that they still haven't released this game in the US. They unload crap like Children of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 4 on us, but leave us in the cold with this one. I'd rather have it on a console than a portable because of multiplayer, but I doubt they'd go through the effort of translating it. They should just pay the fan-translator and sell it on a disc with another Square classic.
TraeThaTruth 2 years ago
well why not just play it on the PC witha emulator.... i played the translated version of this game on a SNES emulator =o

This is definitely one of the best game songs ive ever heard. at 0:59 it goes from bein good to incredible, and then again at 1:25 it gets raised to EPIC!
skins4thewin 2 years ago
Hmm, sounds pretty awesome. Actually makes me want to pick this game up again, though I'm not too far in it...
If any one gives a shit (which they don't) setup is Angela (main), Duran, and Lise. Shitty, I know.

The old music have so much more heart then the new ones..
Santuros12 3 years ago 9
I absolutely agree! I dont know why, but developers just arent putting the same effort into the music... or maybe its because theyve moved on too much from the "video game" style of music and gone for this crap realistic type music we can hear on an every day basis if we want to. The old school RPG music is just so much more catchy than most of todays stuff. Ive never played this game but this is an incredible song, one of the better themes ive heard.
skins4thewin 2 years ago 6
There are still some good songs now and then, but for the most part, I agree. It all started to go downhill after Chrono Cross.
TraeThaTruth 2 years ago
Man in the old SNES and early PSone days, music like this would just inspire you in a way.
You just don't hear it anymore with the new games.
It's kind of a shame.
Asteroidblues18 2 years ago 7
Agreed, while some games still have epic songs, they lack that feeling that moves you.
PenguinsRuleThaWorld 2 years ago 2
Unfortunately agreed in many ways.
daboys121 2 years ago
I believe that with the less powerful graphics, the music definitely played a much larger role in conveying the emotion and intensity in old rpgs. Nowadays, developers seem to bank on their high graphics invoking the emotions and feelings.
I absolutely agree with you skins. I think we need to go back through a revival of some of the old games. I wish a developer had the balls to go and make a compelling modern rpg with a retro feel to it for all of us purists.
Zyel21 2 years ago 52
I totally agree with you dude they will hopefully do that with dragon quest 10 wich is supposed to be for the wii
blackshadow148 2 years ago
@Zyel21
You are right. We rarely see soundtrack as epic as this one, CT or Lufia II.
Now all we see is Sakuraba. I love this guy, but too much and they all feel alike now. His works on Baten Kaitos and Tales of Symphonia were awesome, but now I feel like I'm hearing remixes of Baten Kaitos' soundtrack everywhere O.O
warior98 1 year ago
@Zyel21
Marciejjj 1 year ago
@Zyel21 well tales of symphonia was 1 of those game.. it has an awesome retro feeling to it if you ask me :D

BWEEBLAST 1 year ago
@BWEEBLAST FFXIII was interesting, but overall a fail. With all the sidequests and challenges in the later FF series, no strategy guide covered them all; however, FFXIII's guide did cover them all... because there's like only 2 sidequests. :(
Paradigm shifting = annoying
God I miss Nobuo Uematsu as well. Out of FFXIII I only liked about 3 songs. Pretty to look at, but pretty shallow. I hated the story through most of the game, only at the end does it get a little better.
Thanks for replying!

@Zyel21 they got rid of nobuo uematsu??? those idiots..

@BWEEBLAST No, Square Enix Company did not get rid of Nobuo Uematsu. He left Square Enix in 2004. Square Enix games just sucked comparing to old generation of Final Fantasy games and Squaresoft games from the 90s.
