He is exactly right, I served in Iraq and saw firsthand what bullshit the war really was, and the non military families back here don't care at all about the war, they'd rather watch American Idol or Britney Spears, their "support" goes as far as buying a $2.99 "Support the Troops" magnet, and that is it.

Yeah, I'm getting this spam for a guy who's convinced the Repubs are the lesser racist party. They live in a fantasy world. What can you do? Repubs see W. as a war hero vs. Kerry. Repubs compare Max Cleland to Osama. Repubs deny benefits for soldiers. It goes on and on and on. It's a sickness. You always have to understand that there will be no daylight in a conversation with one. It's like they're vampires.
Also, afirmative action. If you support it, to a repub that means you're racist. If you believe that racism exists and that granting blacks the right to sit anywhere on a bus didn't happen until a few decades ago so they might need some help, you're a racist. Like I said, it's a mental disorder.

Just for the record, the AP released an article yesterday (june 16, 2008)stating the tipping point in Iraq may have been passed and the war is basically won. I know how sad that makes many in America as they were counting on the troops to lose so they could say "I told you so". I have known this was coming since they started pushing into Bqagdad in february of 2007, and here it is june 2008 and the media finally and begrudgingly is admitting maybe we won. It must have hurt the AP to admit it.
Today was the worst day in Iraq since the so called surge 51 killed in the so called saf green zone,Al Quaida are stronger than ever in Afghanastan, and once again have control of nearly half of the country and you say things are fine?BTW,the AP is the least reliable source for news now,all their news is skewed to the corporate point of view. They have becaome the Fux of News Services.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes, very tragic and very sad. The numbers reported are now higher. But it wasn't in the green zone. It was in north bagdad and it was the highest since march, not since the surge began. I don't like AP either, thats why I found it unusual that they would report such a story. They normally focus on numbers killed, by day, week, month, total for year, etc. and rehashing every misstep ever made in the war, rather that telling what is actually happening

Obviously your son in laws with four tours coming up have reenlisted. Tells me they believe in what they are doing. While you use thier sacrifice for your own political needs. I respect your son in laws.
They re-enlisted because of the wonderful Bush economy and lack of jobs.they both have this tour and then they are getting out. They like me have had enough. You NEOCONS can all go straight to hell.
Everything coming out of your posts are ignorant simplistic NEOCON BUSHIT.People like you say you support the troops, but don't give a tinkers damn in hell how many times they have to go back.Your no patriot you are a fool.True patriots do their duty and my duty at the moment is to do everything I can to stop this madness started by people who were to GUTLESS to fight. All you are is a cartoon character like your hero Dumbya.
Read the polls Mr. NEOCON,a hell of a lot more on my side than yours.Change is coming and when it does,I hope the change bus runs over your ignorant mis-informed ass.
I see that you are 17,when I was 19,I was fighting a war that I didn't ask for.I was drafted and fought for my comrades in arms and to stay alive.I didn't ask to be sent to kill other people, but if its them or me,than I'll kill them everytime.Maybe you need to learn a little more about life before you accuse or disparage others for actions you know absolutely nothing about.
blair227: You're right. We DO need a draft. If everyones' children had to concern themselves with either serving, or finding a way "out" of serving, as Dubya did, we'd find an exit strategy in a hurry. Right now, it's just poor kids serving, so that they can earn college money... meanwhile the children of the rich are already IN college, and joining "Young Republican" clubs, so that they can defend the war. It's appalling.

I just came from McDill AFB the other day as my wife had to get her ID updated. There were many soldiers, airman, and marines transiting through but I did not see any children. I did see many men and women in thier 20s, 30s, and 40s though. Didn't see anyone who looked dumb or poor either. I think most of those troops would be very offended by your characterization of them.

by all reports, american forces are kicking the shit out of al qaeda. My problem with bush is his refusal to secure the mexican border. The soldiers come home and they can't tell if their in america or mexico.
BTW, gerry... I've talked to veterans who served in 'Nam. They've told me the same kind of terrible, bloody stories Kerry told to Congress back in the 70's. I first began to hear of those atrocities in 1980, long before I even knew who John Kerry was... I was horrified that our soldiers could do such things. But then, war turns people into animals after awhile. Some people, anyway.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I strongly recommend you read the book "Stolen Valor". I believe it came out about 10 years ago and was a best seller. I too have heard alot about atrocities in Vietnam. You need to read the book.
gerry301: It's YOUR president, and YOUR Republican presidential nominee who are against giving our veterans the benefits they deserve. I would GLADLY pay more in taxes, if my money were to go to our troops AT ANY STAGE OF THEIR LIVES, or to universal health care for all of our citizens. I'm paying out of the ass NOW, but all of my money is going to Halliburton, Raytheon, Blackwater, and GOP pork. Take my money, but spend it wisely. You folks don't care, just as long as it doesn't go to the poor.
The first contracted out war in our history. If you want to see real waste in action look at the war profits hauled in by blackwater and KBR etc. This fucking war has cost us more than all the wars in our history.Yeah that big business is so much better than govt. with my tax dollars. The draft should have never been done away with.If we had a draft now the war would have never occured.BTW it was Rumsfeld who further wanted to shrink the military.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I thought you were in Vietnam? If you were you would have known much of the war was contracted out. PA@E was a prime contractor for building bases, communications, etc. etc. the same as in Iraq. Noone in the military wants the draft back. The troops train together get shipped over together and watch each others back. They do not want 2 year draftees that don't want to be there and can't be depended upon.
Of couse there were civilians in Vietnam, but not to this extent and yes the draft is needed.Nobody needs to spend 4 and 5 tours in a war zone unless you have no grasp of what even a year of hevy combt can do to a man.You get numbed to the horror but you never forget it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I served when they had the draft but most of my career was with the all volunteer force. Nobody in the military who remembers the draft wants it back. The Army/Marine numbers are being increased as the war is winding down.
Thats pure bushshit. The army is now taking convicted felons and lowered their standards to the point that 43 year olds can now enlist. The only way you can fight a war like this is to bring back the draft. When I was in, most of the draftees had some college and on the whole were a very intelligent lot.Obviously as I mentioned before you really don't care how many times the current guys have to continue going back.BTW I never heard of anybody being drafted into the Air Force.
Righties have a comic book view of the world. Terrorism and its nature is not something they can understand. They think there is this troop of Black Barts of a certain number and that when they kill the last one terrorism is over and the "War on Terror" will be won. It's really quite embarrassing.
47f0, gerry301 isn't so much a liar as he is ignorant. A common affliction among neocon apologists.
In the face of the barrage of purposeful LIES and disinformation and during a time when support for Bush was very high, 156 Congress Members Voted NO to the invasion of Iraq.
To call into question the heroism of John Kerry shows your lack of knowledge and your bias. John Kerry was a war hero,Bush and Cheney are draft dodging cowards and war criminals. You are an apologist whether you admit it or not.I'm a Vietnam Vet with a daughter disabled from this idiotic war.I see you are retired Air Force, tell me apologist how many times were you actually shot at? I flew as a gunner on a UH1 on 135 combat missions.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hmmm, You have my sympathies on your daughter. biased? Perhaps. A war hero? I don't think so. he wrote his own medal. I could care less about Bush and Cheney. Shot at? Yes, often. We had 19 wounded and two killed in one night attack. We had constant fire from charlie. Had a 122mm Russian rocket land in one guys hooch and didn't explode. Had bombs blowing up on the runway. If you were a gunner on a helo, I salute you. But I won't salute Kerry.
And I won't salute cowards like Bush and Cheney, who hide behind our soldiers yet had to be brought kicking and screaming to properly equip them with body armor and armored Humvees.I had to pay for my daughters body armor myself and thankefully it probably saved her life.

I don't like politicians as a rule, so I have no problem with your comment. As far as equipment, I'm sure you remember the "procurement holiday" we had for eight years previous. Of coarse, I'm sure it slipped your mind. As well as a sec def who got the job because he was the most antimilitary person in the senate. Les Aspin. But you may not remember him, I do.
There was no procurement holiday as I remember so don't blame Bill.My son in law was in Kosovo and he had everything he needed and more.Thats the difference with running the military in a professional manner and listening to the commmanders instead of firing the ones who don't follow in lockstep with the 2 goosestepping morons today.BTW,if you don't think atrocities happen in war then you're truely a delusionl man.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There was a major procurement holiday during those years with few if any new systems added. The military was dispised by the administration. Do the research. Yes, atrocities do happen in war. But I like to keep a little perspective on it. Can you tell me how many atrocities we had in Vietnam that were investigated and found legitimate? I can. Kerry should not even be in the senate, and his remarks to congress were opportunistic at best and treasonous at worst.
Ever hear of Mai Lai? Man you show your ignorance on real combat. Atrocities always happen in war, it is unavoidable. When your ordered into a village to search and destroy what in the hell do you think that means? No one wants to kill innocents, but it does happen and has happened in every war in history. My daughter was a supply sergeant supporting the 82nd Airborne and while in Kuwait awaiting the Iraq invasion 2 women she knew were raped.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes. How many died at My Lai? (There was one more you missed:) Now, give me the low estimate of atrocities commited by the NVA and VC. No, two wrongs do not make a right, but they do give it a little perspective.
I knew some swiftboaters, one who served with Kerry was a frat brother of mine.He said Kerry was a true hero and I'll believe a real combat vet over the swifboat liars. If anyone has no honor it's tools like John O'neill who was a Nixon lapdog. We weren't supposed to be in Cambodia either but on at least 7 occasions in late 70-71 we flew in and extracted special forces there. If Bush and McCain are such lovers of the military, why won't they sign off on the new GI Bill and the new pay increase?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Read the book "SOG". It details many of the missions into Laos and Cambodia as well as the politics of the time. Also recomment you read "Stolen Valor". Came out about ten years ago and was a best seller. The second atrocity committed by US troops in Vietnam was by a group of marines who killed 10 innocent civilians. Again, what was the low estimate of innocent people murdered by the NVA and VC?
I don't read right wing revionist claptrap.I was there during that time and I know what went on.I don't need to read idiocy from right wing think tanks,I get my info from people who were really there and went through the horrors of war not some retired 2 of 3 star who never got out of his fucking bunker long enough to even know what was going on.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
SOG was written by a Major John Plaster who was a three tour vietnam vet. No revisionism, no claptrap. It details many of the SOG operations in and around the Vietnam war. Excellant reading. Stolen Valor is by another Viet vet named Burkett who started uncovering many many people who claimed to be heros, or had stories of atrocities and were found to either never to have served or were not who they claimed to be. It includes congressmen, community leaders, commanders of the VFW, etc etc.
Like I say I don't read books with a point of view to hawk.I'm supposed to believe these Sam Spade wannabes? I'm sure they were very honest and openminded-NOT.I was there,I know we un-intentionally killed innocents, mainly it was bad intelligence or the enemy had left before we got there via their vast tunnel systems.BTW you Air Force guys killed more innocents than we did with your Napalm and carpet bombing.Wish I could have spent my war 5 miles above it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Actually I think you would like both books. Not wannabes by any streach of the imagination and tell it very much as it was. You can buy it cheap on amazon. I had a good friend in the 2 battalion, 7th Cav, Ist Air Cav Div from 1968-nov 1969, was involved in operation pegasis (sp) and soon after in the A Shaw. I was at Bein Hoa, 1970-71.
That's right Frank. And give them the Jim Webb GI Bill too. Assholes hide behind those serving. Give them the real support they need. Don't be an asshole...um...you know who.
I had recalled "Rand" as being someone whom, in the past, I thought was "one of the good guys". But I have to admit that it hadn't occurred to me that he was just being sarcastic when he posted here. I thought that I must have remembered him wrong. I guess maybe I've just been dealing with too many folks like gerry301 lately. I apologize to "Rand". May he get some satisfaction in knowing that my face is red right now. MY BAD!
@gerry301 , no disrespect to your military service. Especially on Memorial Day , thanks for your service.
But you were in the service , so I doubt you would question the motives of your superiors, that's all. It's damn sure not the troops fault if they are ,at times ,used for nefarious purposes.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You are very correct. And what bothers me so much is, I was witness to it before. So I do not want to see it happen again. When you're 21 and your country tells you you are going to war, you go and do your best. Our troops have done thier best and have won the war. Yet it is the war at home they must fight as well. The politicians could care less and worry more about being reelected. The war is an issue, so they will sell thier soul for a vote.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
As far as the issue of questioning superiors in the military, it is encouraged. To ask why someone has to do something is very american. In a combat situation with lives at stake, and when deadly responses are required one does not have the opportunity to discuss the ramifications of world politics at the moment. Legal briefings as to the rules of war, and current rules of engagement are a weekly occurance for the troops in Iraq and Afganistan. Are you up to date on thier legal discussions?
Frank - good work, as usual. There are millions of veterans. Retired, active, disabled. EVery group has been promised medical benefits. Every group has benefits delayed or denied. They have been betrayed. We must work to end this madness and take proper care of the people who serve. May we never again be an aggressor nation. War Criminals are in the White House.
RandWasAnAsshole: I once thought that you were fairly "cool" and intelligent. I guess I was wrong. You've misjudged yourself... you, apparently, ARE a dumbass.
Frank: You need to run for political office. Nevermind... you could never win. You're too honest, caring, courageous, and you have too much integrity. Another fine video, Frank. Everyone supports the troops... we just don't support the neocons who started the war in Iraq in the first place, for the sole purpose of ambition and financial gain. It's a travesty. I, too, would pay more in taxes if it meant better benefits for our soldiers and veterans. McCain and Bush don't seem to care.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Chiffon, give it a rest. I don't think you are capable of separating politics from the troops. I am one who certainly hopes you get to pay more in taxes to support those who are doing the job they were sent to do. But if memory serves me right as soon as the war is over and the troops come home you'll be yelling to stop spending on defense. You want it both ways. You do remember the empty Army after Vietnam don't you? I do, along with the no pay raises, no support etc.etc.
You forget your master McSame and Bush have no intention of troops coming home, why 58 permanent bases and the largest and most fortified embassy/cia/nsa facility in the world?
The neo-cons have planned from the start to occupy the entire middle east. We intend to stop them.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I believe of the "58" or so bases most are of the very small training type. I think there are only 3 or 4 of aany major size. Since you are from Russia, I am not surprised you want to stop the US. I'm sure Putin would like nothing more than to have Iraq in his pocket.
Maybe you would have more credibility if you did not jump to conclusions so much, in this case about bases that are obviously not small training bases and my being Russian. I happen to live in Russia but also have homes in California(where I was a 5th generation Californian) and other places with roots dating back 300 years in what later became the USA. Do a little research on the major permanent bases before guessing they are small.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Your bio says you are Russian. I have 300year old roots in France. My sources on the net says most are small bases related to training. But I would guess others may be radar, or listening posts. Lets see what the finale treaty says. There is no need for more than three or four major US military bases in Iraq to insure its security.
Seriously, see how jumping to conclusions are not iluminating reality? You guessed and assumed about me from information misread, you assumed about the bases contrary to many published reports of the constuction details and sizes, and you assumed I was Russian because I have a home in St Petersburg and am posting from there. All these assumptions have distorted your view of what is quite plainly available. Next time you read a claim, try to get contextual background or you might guess wrong.
Any bases by a foreign power, according to polls of Iraqis will be against the will of the people. They do not want us there. So much for democracy. We will continue to be the source of conflict as long as we continue to occupy their country. We have no legitimate reason to occupy their country unless you think maintaining control of the oil for Bush friendly oil companies is reason enough.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I did not misread your country as Russia. Its what you listed. I did not mistate what I said as it is what I have read. My view would have been the same had you listed San Francisco. The Putin remark, was too valuable to let go:p
How on earth would you claim I am Russian simply because the place of posting in listed as "Russia", not Russian citizenship, not Ethnic Russian. You do not see how that jumping to conclusions not base in fact has made your assumptions about Putin and the 58 bases equally groundless. You know nothing about Putin or Iraq is appears, just as you could not tell there is a difference in place versus ethnicity. Does that no worry you that such simple mistakes in logic cause you to be wrong so often?
you hate your daddy! you are a commie and you hate the troops. r u a librul? i tink u r. u wnat my gun and thats rong. libruls are killing our troops with there commie ways. u r a baby killr. u r hurting our poor rich pewople with yor taxes. our rich people are vry good cuz teyr rich and oly good ppl get rich. commie!
Not really, just kidding. I can already see that the "independent" thinkers are having comprehension issues. Rock on brother! IVAW baby!
Frank, why so hard on Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice? Don't you know it's Dick Durbin's fault we went to war in Iraq? Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are former Hallibuton employees and stock holders. The "Democrates" are to blame. Except if the war is percieved a victory. Then it's Dumbya's great leadership.
Got it? Stop being such a partisan hack! This sounds like a commercial for the Democratic party (if I was a dumbass).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Methinks you forgot "Dick Durbin" and his statement "the american troops are worse than Pol Pot, Stalin or Hitler". And "Murtha" who called the marines "Cold blooded murderers". How about "Kerry" and his "get an education or you could end up in Iraq". Lest I forget, "Harry Reid" and his June of 2007 remarks on the surge "We,ve lost". But these were all democrates. Sounds more like politics as usual to me.
Bull. You destroy your own hawk arguments by including such things as Kerry. Kerry was clearly referring to our idiot-in-chief, as any reasonable person could tell from the context. Kerry shouldn't quit his day job for a comedy career, but he was not attacking the vets he served with, unlike Bush and Cheney, who avoided service - George by hiding out in the guard, and Cheney with his five deferments. By the way - we haven't lost against Iraq - but we can't win either. It's the wrong kind of war.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You seem to forget Kerry made his reputation at the Winter soldier congressional hearings where he stated the troops were raping, pilaging cutting off ears in the style of gengis kahn. Even tho ALL the allegations he brought up were investigated by the DOD none of them, not one turned out to be true. Yes he served, yet he still won't release his military records. Many believe its because he was discharged under less than honorable conditions and later pardoned under Carter.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
By the way, you seem to be out of touch as the general consensus amoung the troops I know seems to be we are kicking butt, and have been so good at it its getting harder to find butt to kick. No kind of war is the right kind, but you seem to have forgotten very quickly how ALL the congressmen/women voted for it and ALL told us Sadam was a danger and had WMDs. This country sent the troops and those who did better damn well support them. You're a politician in disguise.
And you are a not very thinly disguised liar, which qualifies you for politician status far more than I could ever aspire to. Your use of false absolutes gives you away. Now, for your spanking and homework, go find out which representatives did NOT vote to give Bush his blank check. I damn well do support the troops - my son is one of them. They were sent on the wrong mission. Support them by only using them for what they signed up for - defending our country. Iraq was never, ever a threat.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Sorry, I am none of the things you call me. Glad your son signed up, I salute him. For you the only war you seem to have been willing to fight, was the civil war. The rest of my comments stand on thier own. Have a nice day. Vote 4 McCain in 2008.
It passed the Senate by a vote of 77 to 23, and the House of Representatives by a vote of 296 to 133.
In the end, 156 members of Congress from 36 states had enough information and personal insight and wisdom to make the correct decision for our national and the world community.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'll stand with the troops and support them in the job they were sent to do. I will not support congressmen/women who voted to send them to war then turned thier backs on them. Kerry, Hillory, or any of the others who did the same. Actually I also like Obama as he did not vote for the war, and speaks honestly about it. But I will never vote for those who count votes for reelection when peoples lives are at stake.
War profiteering is not new. The East India Company conquered India had a war started with China to force them to allow the sale of Opium.
In the US, Smedley Butler's "War is a Racket" and his speech on intervention also shows war profiteering has existed for over a century but its not in schools and people know little or nothing about it
This admin takes privatization and parasitic corruption to self-destructive unprecedented new level
You hit the nail on the head Frank! The problem is the majority of the people are either dumb, or they don't really care until it affects them personally!
I wish the country would just wake up, and march down to Washington, and as someone once said "Smoke 'em out!"
I agree people dont care enough, Bread and Circuses, but the problem is bigger than people
The Media is used as Propaganda. The CPI during WW1 in the US inspired Nazi Propaganda.
Despite propaganda the people voted for a bring troops home mandate, which had no effect. So democracy is a front, a facade, people are brainwashed by the elite and their vote changes very little. There are anti-war protests but on TV its as if there arent any and most people dont know.

"The majority of the people are either too dumb, or they really don't care until it affects them personally". Or it could be the people are smarter than you and can see a good result from what is happening in Iraq and Afganistan.
The "good" in Iraq and Afganistan? An illegal occupation of a country that resists our attempts to dominate them, reinforced Taliban controlling over 50% of the country, record opium poppy production, no political solutions in Iraq, no-bid oil rights given to Bush personal friends against the wishes of the people of Iraq, a completely failed infrastructure, almost complete ethnic and religious cleansing of major populations centers(the real reason for less violence,no one is left to fight)....
What do you have to say for war-mongering Obama now Frank?

If people have to fight at all it should be to defend those they love, not a country.

blair227: You're right.

They do not want 2 year draftees that don't want to be there and can't be depended upon.

I believe of the "58" or so bases most are of the very small training type. I think there are only 3 or 4 of aany major size. Since you are from Russia, I am not surprised you want to stop the US. I'm sure Putin would like nothing more than to have Iraq in his pocket.
gerry301 3 years ago
Maybe you would have more credibility if you did not jump to conclusions so much, in this case about bases that are obviously not small training bases and my being Russian. I happen to live in Russia but also have homes in California(where I was a 5th generation Californian) and other places with roots dating back 300 years in what later became the USA. Do a little research on the major permanent bases before guessing they are small.
km6xz 3 years ago

Your bio says you are Russian. I have 300year old roots in France. My sources on the net says most are small bases related to training. But I would guess others may be radar, or listening posts. Lets see what the finale treaty says. There is no need for more than three or four major US military bases in Iraq to insure its security.
gerry301 3 years ago
Seriously, see how jumping to conclusions are not iluminating reality? You guessed and assumed about me from information misread, you assumed about the bases contrary to many published reports of the constuction details and sizes, and you assumed I was Russian because I have a home in St Petersburg and am posting from there. All these assumptions have distorted your view of what is quite plainly available. Next time you read a claim, try to get contextual background or you might guess wrong.
km6xz 3 years ago
Any bases by a foreign power, according to polls of Iraqis will be against the will of the people. They do not want us there. So much for democracy. We will continue to be the source of conflict as long as we continue to occupy their country. We have no legitimate reason to occupy their country unless you think maintaining control of the oil for Bush friendly oil companies is reason enough.

gerry301 3 years ago
How on earth would you claim I am Russian simply because the place of posting in listed as "Russia", not Russian citizenship, not Ethnic Russian. You do not see how that jumping to conclusions not base in fact has made your assumptions about Putin and the 58 bases equally groundless. You know nothing about Putin or Iraq is appears, just as you could not tell there is a difference in place versus ethnicity. I agree, I believe every congressman/woman who voted to go to war in Iraq should never be allowed to hold public office again.

Good video commentary
