It's a fact that Mike Myers (the man of Austin Powers) early in his career was too shy to speak normally at interviews and often got into character in attempt to dismantle any apprehension. So, yes, there are shy actors. There's a difference between being on set (where he's most likely most comfortable) and in a room filled with a large amount of people being interviewed.

Then there are those who enjoy being famous as well, and in the limelight, and I do not perceive Depp as being one of them. Appearing at some shows like this is part of promotion for a film. He doesn't necessary like it. And he never watches his own films, not even on the premieres, because he is not comfortable with seeing himself on the screen.
