@ alwilliam: the thing right before the light on the drivers side isnt a scanner. It's a bord indicating that there is a high piece in the middle, and you have to pass it on the right side of that bord, this form has a build in light, but doesnt seem to be working. But it's not a scanner.
Nothing evil or stupid about it. That wasn't a public street. Clearly it was an entrance or a ramp to something that requires VERIFICATION. Notice the SCANNER in front of the light by the drivers side. The light will turn green after scanning your verification infrared or magnetic from a device in your windshield or dashboard or your plate. Simple as that.The stopper was there to stop people from passing red lights without being verified. Some people are just stupid to ignore signs and warnings.

This road is a common route to bypass the very crowded A13 highway. People in the small town this road goes through were fed up with drivers speeding by (the one street you drive is very narrow so no escape route there). I guess their complaints caused the city planners to go for this kind of light. It's to take the speed away and to discourage going there when you don't need to be there. There's usually a cue of about 8 cars so you loose your advantage.

A motorcyclist taking the outside of the lanes would miss the pole. Dead on a high speed with gear wiuld be critically injured or dead. Slower speed it'd be, "Ah shit." and a few bumps and bruises and maybe a broken bone.
This is only for two lane rodes it seems. If it were more lanes, the pole would be too dangerous to the safe drivers because of others crashing.

To get the block go down and the lights go green you need a sender. Only special cars (taxi's etc. ) and buses can get through because they have a sender in their vehicle provided by local government.

These are not regular traffic lights. In this case you are entering a restricted area or a road that will be closed down at certain times.
It is being used to prevent people -- who do not live in the specific area -- from taking sneak routes in case of traffic jams or to reduce traffic.
If you don't live there or the road is closed, you don't have access.
This driver is just nuts and should look at the major warning signs.

That particular light and many other similar ones are heavily laden with warning signs.
Anyway the light did turn red and the driver clearly drive thru it - serve him right.
Usually such lights like this are usually to prevent cars driving thru public transportation only routes, carparks, toll roads and motorway freeways.

We actually have these here, and quite a lot to be honest. This is to prevent people massively sneaking through residential areas to avoid the high ways at rush hour. You need to wait like 30 seconds to 1 minute before you can actually pass.

Jump a red light - fair enough, get a fine but trashing the car is just plain sadism by a psycho local town hall. Punishment should fit the crime! Love Amsterdam though - yeah baby.

A motorcyclist taking the outside of the lanes would miss the pole. Dead on a high speed with gear wiuld be critically injured or dead. Slower speed it'd be, "Ah shit." and a few bumps and bruises and maybe a broken bone.
This is only for two lane rodes it seems. If it were more lanes, the pole would be too dangerous to the safe drivers because of others crashing.

dude, here in the netherlands, we get fucking traffic lights at every fucking point you can t urn off to another road. well exept for on highways, but even then you sometimes get them (when you go on the highway). its a full country lotsa cars xD

To get the block go down and the lights go green you need a sender. Only special cars (taxi's etc. ) and buses can get through because they have a sender in their vehicle provided by local government.

its a gate man, closes the way from people whore not supposed to get there. (mainly on sneak passages where theyre used to prevent that masses of traffic will use those roads or something like that.)

WOW. we definately need that in americas big cities. i cant tell you how many people run the CLEARLY red light. at least two, but ive seen up to four. if we employed this, people would never run a red light again. awesome.
