i loved the last finale, i was emotionally moved and it showed physically watching the ending, probably the most beautiful thing i have ever seen, but when i saw this finale and the crate showing john in it, i trembled with fear at what this thing (fake locke) was ,and then when he said 'you have no idea what i have gone through to be here' i shook and my mind raced through all 5 previous seasons, added everything together and i was completely shocked, goosebumps running all over my body.......
i dont think i have ever in my life watching something got so many chills, when the MIB says ' you have no idea what i have gone through to be here' everything just fell into place for me, my mind worked everything out about 0.245 seconds after he finished that line. i worked out that who ever this man was, was taking the form of christian, locke, yemi, dave and other characters and i was so gobsmacked it was like i had been told the meaning of life by god
When he said "They're coming." perhaps he meant the remaining candidates, since they were teleported from the 70's to the present day, which was the ultimate downfall of MIB
One of the things I didn't like about the season 5 finale was the way they completely retconned the scene in s3 where Ben takes Locke to Jacob's cabin. If Ben had never met Jacob, how'd he know about the cabin and why was Richard so cool with letting Ben go to meet Jacob? And are we really to believe that Ben was just trying to put on a show for Locke before?
@MyMojosSoDope By Ben's own admission, what happened in the cabin was a complete surprise to him. We can now surmise that The Man In Black was the presence in the cabin at the time and caused things to go flying around. It makes sense that Ben tried to put on a show, he was jealous of Locke from the beginning. I agree that the cabin itself was never really explained, though, and it's one of the show's more glaring unsolved mysteries, though not the worst by far.
@anarchymethod I realize Ben said he was lying, but I feel this is a sloppily handled retcon. For One thing when Ben takes Locke to see Jacob, Alpert seems ok with it and says nothing, even though we know Alpert never took Ben to see Jacob and told him he had to wait. So why did Alpert say nothing, and how did Ben even know about the cabin in the first place? Furthermore, when the cabin started to shake, Ben actually grabs the chair and asks "Jacob" to stop, he didn't seem like he was pretending
Not sure if this has been mentioned already but in "Dr Linus" in Season 6, Miles told Ben that Jacob, right until the knife went through his heart, hoped he was wrong about Ben. Jacob said "What about you?" in order to see if Ben could be redeemed or if he corrupted (although at the time we all believed that Jacob was just ignorantly dismissing Ben). This idea was also conveyed in "Ab Aeterno" in Season 6 when Jacob told Richard about how men need to choose good over evil by themselves.
@Dharahion No, it regards the man in black. He can't kill Jacob on his own, he needs someone to do it for him. But this person needs to be able to get access to Jacob, and so the "loophole" was the man in black assuming the disguise of John Locke (the new leader) and being able to manipulate Benjamin Linus into killing Jacob.
There's a fundamental issue with your theory, in the fact that the loophole was discussed well before Benjamin Linus even existed.
@Damon242 I guess you're wrong, did Jacob stop Richard when he was manipulated by MIB? Yes he did because Richard wasn't touched by him yet , Jacob is only vulnerable to the ones he touched. The loophole is something like the Jacob traitors. Jacob talked about loophole way before because he thought he would never be betrayed. The manipulation reffers to "found your loophole"
if Jacob is only vulnerable to the ones he touches, why did he beat the crap out of richard and disarm as he marched to kill him?
And in regards to Ben, Jacob never touched him. When Ben was a child he was taken into the temple and thanks to the scenes in 'LA X', we know that he was healed in the pool. There is nothing to indicate that Jacob was at the temple and touched Ben.
The loophole is that the man in black needed someone else, and someone with access.
Why did MIB kill Jacob? In this scene Ben only stabbed Jacob, MIB kills him, why? Because Jacob lost his inmortalty in the moment he was betrayed by his own people, Jacob brings people to the island to prove MIB wrong but he wasn't wrong, Ben is the loophole that determined MIB was right.
Jacob is vulnerable to his own people and people he touches obviously.
@Dharahion Ben's blow is what killed Jacob - notice the bleeding to death? His struggling to speak? And his absolute lack of resistance when hitting the fire (living people don't just lie still when burning, they thrash) - Jacob was dead because of Ben stabbing him in the chest.
Ben lost his immortality the moment Ben plunged a knife in his chest.
Jacob never touched Ben, I already mentioned this. So your theory doesn't work anyway.
Rewatching the whole series makes me think differently about this scene. It's like Jacob is saying "yes, what about you, why can't you be the good protector that this island needs?" It's if he's trying to make Ben see his weaknesses and also to challenge Ben to change his ways.
@mutantemma Really? I saw it more as Jacob trying to convince Ben to find the answer for himself. That no one will be able to answer Ben's question, but himself.
Ben really did so much for Jacob, but he did it in a deceptive, sneaky, and ruthless way. Whatever Jacob's laws (commandments) were, Ben broke every single one of them.
I don't care what jacob's intentions were. He was a manipulating, self-rigeous, prick who played around with so many people's lives with the endgame of resolving his own personal family problems. He was little better than his brother. So he got what he deserved.
@OneGaurdian No, Jacob wasn't evil. Jacob believed that everyone needed to make their own decisions. He was wise and compassionate, unlike his brother.
@Scoonertuna I wouldn't call Jacob 'wise' or 'compassionate'. Jacob was petulant most of the time. He only seemed to grow up and start assessing the situation properly when he started planning towards his own demise.
He admits in 'What They Died For' that the entire situation exists because of his own mistakes.
@Damon242 You're right. maybe kind and compassionate were too strong of words to use. I saw him as one of those people who accepted things the way they were and believed that things would get better.
@Scoonertuna lol a blind optimist then. I always thought of Jacob as one of those people who complained about things, wanted things to change, but never bothered to do anything about it.
I guess it wouldn't be so bad if his laziness didn't cost the lives of hundreds of people...
@OneGaurdian Lol...He believed people should there own choices and not follow whatever someone told them, seems to me you dont like the actor or you need to watch lost again.
@JimmyThaCrazy I like the actor a lot actually, in Lost, Supernatural, Being Human and other stuff. Again, his intentions may have been good, but in my opinion he went about it the wrong way, over and over again. There were times when he should've actually stepped in and done something. He may have not been a merciless killer like his brother, but he made plenty of mistakes and should've carried around plenty of guilt over his actions - or lack of.
@OneGaurdian But then again, it's not like he changed their lives for the worse. All of the candidates had miserable lives. Still though, I guess the lines between good and bad are never really defined in Lost. There's not one character I would call purely good or purely bad, including Jacob. He even admitted it himself that he's flawed. But I guess that's one of the themes of the show. :)
@OneGaurdian It's not like he took anyone away from a great beautiful life, they were all miserable and flawed, like he said. If the black smoke would've got away from the island, the whole world would be screwed and evil.
@xoxojollyy I'm not arguing against his motivations, but his methods were just as flawed as his 'mother's'. He behaved a lot llike someone who thought it was okay to manipulate things and people the way he did. Despite the things he could do, he was still only human, but at times it seemed like he thought of himself as more. My problem with Jacob was that he talked about people and the good they were capable of when didn't really live up to that idea himself. Not in my eyes, anyways.
@OneGaurdian I think he did them a favor, Kate would've eventually gotten caught and went to jail, Jack would've end up like his father, Locke probably would end up killing himself, Sawyer would have been arrested, Sayid life was going downhill, Hugo was cursed, Charlie was an addict, the Kwons were unhappy. Them coming to the island, helped them more than they could ever help it. And like I said before, the whole world would be evil if the black smoke got away.
@xoxojollyy Sure, but Michael also ended killing Ana-Lucia and Libby in cold blood. Walt and Ji Yeon both ended up parentless. Ana-Lucia accidently killed Shannon. Then, of course, more than half the passenegrs and crew in the plane died, and a majority of the survivors wound up getting killed later on; a good number of them at the hands his Others. He also allowed Sayid's wife to die, only saving Sayid because he was a canidate.Claire also missed three years of her son's life. Not a fair trade.
@OneGaurdian Alot of those things, were not Jacobs fault or doings. Claire going crazy wasn't her fault, she DECIDED to follow her wanna be dad in the jungle, Michael decided to kill Ana-Lucia which lead to him killing Libby. Now,Jacob did think that Walt special, which he was, &should've never left the island. But most of things were "The Others" fault which is most of Bens doings. Now Sayid, yeah Nadia died, his soul mate. But him and Shannon i think belonged together. He got 2 chances at love
@xoxojollyy Still, someone who really cared about people would've stepped in and tried to actually do something - but he didn't. Jacob mostly hung back and watched as if he was above it all, when he wasn't. He should've found better ways to bring his canidates to the island than crashing a plane that killed a whole bunch of other innocent people. Before that he was bringing other people to the island knowing exactly what his brother would do and didn't lift a finger to stop him.
@OneGaurdian The island brought the people to the island, and the island made the plane crash. All he was was the protector. But yeah I understand that alot of people died, and Jacob did nothing, but their was no way for him to stop smoky.
@xoxojollyy He could've tried. people who really want to help their fellow man step in and lend a helping hand, instead of doing a little manipulating here and there and just watch everything go down from the shadows. Anytime he took some sort of action, or showed concern for others, was when he was in danger of losing too many candidates. Nothing that I have seen about this character makes me see him as someone worth blindly following.
@OneGaurdian You've got a point there. I have nothing to say back. But he was thinking of the island, and the rest f the world. Those were his intentions, even if he went about them the wrong way.
Its funny I started off thinking from his first episode that Ben was just an evil slimy prick nad as the show went on it made me feel more and more sympathetic towards him. To me 2:15 to 3:15 is the final nail in that sympathy coffin. I just felt so bad for him.
My interpretation of Jacob's response to Ben was that he was testing him. The question "What about you?" is a call for Ben to make a choice, to prove himself one way or the other if he was to play into MIB's hands and kill Jacob. But of course, Jacob had a plan, and Ben murdering him was apart of that.
This is simply one of the best scenes in Lost. I can completely relate to this scene since I've been dealing with similar issues Ben was going through in this scene. But that's beside the point. Michael Emerson is a phenomenal actor, and even though Ben killed Jacob, it goes to show you how well a show is crafted when you understand why someone commits a horrible act like this. Best. TV. Show. Ever.
@111fearless1111 That scene in my opinion made Jacob look like an asshole. What about you? That was an insult at its finest. Here is a man who gave his life unquestionably to the divine will of Jacob, and the only response he got was, What about you? Reminds me of the story of Job.
@IIXtremeBoxII I think that more than wanting the MIB dead, Jacob was tired and realized he was no longer fit to protect the Island. He could never kill the MIB and he was weary of trying to keep the MIB there. So when he finally found his replacements, he could leave without leaving the Island without a protector who could do what he couldn't- kill the MIB.
@IIXtremeBoxII I also think that he was sincerely sorry for what he did to MIB and that is why he could never kill him. I think he wanted to make amends far more than killing the MIB.
@IIXtremeBoxII No he didn't, don't you remember the beginning of the episode, Dr. Linus? Miles uses his powers and says right up until the second the knife went through his heart, he was hoping he was wrong about Ben.
@surshot56 Actually, I don't think it was an insult at all. Ben asks him what is wrong with him, and Jacob repeats his last sentence to him "What about you?". In other words Jacob is saying, THAT is what is wrong with you Ben; your selfish attitude. You are only thinking about yourself.
@manchesterfellow He was only thinking about himself when he did what he was told? He was acting selflessly his enitire life and when he asked about himself he gets the privilege of being told hes selfish? I'm not sure I follow your line of thought. Did you miss his story about him serving Jacob unquestionably?
@surshot56 First of all surshot, lose the sarcasm. If you are going to address me address me properly.
Now, did Ben serve Jacob unquestionably? He tried to kill John Locke twice - and succeeded once. He returned to the island when banished. It became clear that Ben was being manipulated by MIB for years (dead Mother?) Try to remember the last series. We thought for four seasons that Ben knew everything - he didn't. We found him to be a jealous scared individual craving power. "What about me?"
@surshot56 On the surface, yes. But while jacob was hoping he was wrong about ben (to simplify his own plan or further delay MIB), he also knew that allowing ben to kill him would: 1) let MIB think he had won and actually attempt to destroy the island (so jack could stop him) 2) allow himself to appear to the candidates at will to direct his plan of destroying MIB from behind the scenes. It was tragic that Ben gave himself to Jacob and he apparently didn't care, but ben failed to realize (contd)
@surshot56 that this was all part of a MUCH larger and more ancient plan, which was coming to a head after millenia of stalemates -- and his devotion to Jacob and the misery he experienced was a consequence of how this game was to be played out (i.e. Jacob's rule of no direct intervention - "it's pointless if I have to force them to do anything - why should I have to step in?")
@surshot56 One could also argue that Jacob was testing Ben by reacting so coldly, to see if he would know right from wrong. and knowing Jacob, it would seem he has a backup plan for either outcome.
@ashlathelight The why should I have to step in question seems fitting for a lazy so called benevolent being. Which is one of th reasons why i'm not religious anymore. We a person (ben) who didn't ask for any involvement in this sick twisted joke played by Jacob and all he did was remain loyal and obedient to Jacob's will and the only response he got was, "what about you?" Really? Hes an asshole.
@surshot56 But Ben did ask for involvement. He asked for involvement when he ousted Widmore to take over the others. The reason Miles tells Ben that Jacob wished he was wrong about Ben is because Jacob knew Ben was selfish. "What was so wrong with me? - What about me?" "What about me" (You Ben, are selfish. You are supposed to be sacrificing your life to protect the source, and all you have thought about is yourself and your power). What about you indeed.
@surshot56 You have to remember also though that Jacob, who is almost 2,000 years old, has been raised in the only morality he knows -- protecting the island. To him, the manipulations and games that were played over the centuries were a necessary evil in order to prevent MIB from leaving. Mother died leaving these rules (e.g. cannot harm each other) and Jacob had to handle this potential apocalypse as best he can, even if it costs lives because ultimately the fate of the world is at stake.
@surshot56 What about you? its not an insult its more like give him (ben) an excuse to kill him (jacob) ... Dont you somtimes tell's ppl exactly what they want to hear ??? ... anyway that my opinion.. Miss LOST ..R.I.P..♥
@surshot56 Lol, maybe the fact that he has lived for thousands of years in the island, maybe because he had some "replacement" on the way..maybe because he didnt fight? In ab aeterno he beat up Richard in a similat situation. And odnt forget that protecting the island is a burgain, when mother died she thanked her murder..
@surshot56 Later the man in black, or was it the dead guy psychic dude, says "Till the very last second he was hoping he was wrong about you", in other words, Jacob baited Ben in the hope that he was wrong about him, but Ben proved him right and murdered him in rage.
@ChristopherDone He could have just Ben what was really up. All Ben wanted was to know why Jacob put him through so much stress is that to much to ask? I mean really? You see the religious nut jobs posting in favor of Jacob and thats because they missed the whole point of divine authority. Since Jacob is divine and Ben isn't he can't be challenged. Ben, because he is human can't challenge the authority of Jacob. Its about power. You ever read the story of Job in the bible? Same thing.
@ChristopherDone Job is powerless against the destructive nature of God and can't do anything to stand up against God's might and power and must therefore take whatever cruel and unusual punishment he was receiving from God. People often times say oh God was testing Job faith but if you read the damn story thats not what God was destroying Job's life for.
@surshot56 It's not about faith, no; it's about integrity. Job was tested by seeing if he still behaves righteously without God's support. Ben was tested the same way, and as we have seen throughout the show, Ben has no integrity, and he settles it by murdering Jacob. Hence, "he was hoping he was wrong about you".
@ChristopherDone "it's not about faith, no; it's about integrity. Job was tested by seeing if he still behaves righteously without God's support."
I can tell you either didn't read my comment correctly pr your didn't read the bible and i'm inclined to believe both are true judging what you wrote. No where in the story of Job did God test Job to see if he would still behave (I hate when religious people use that word) without his help. God ruined Job without any reason or cause.
@surshot56 I read your ignorant comments and I have indeed read the book of Job in the Bible which you clearly have not (and I don't know why you keep saying to people 'have you read the book of Job' when you evidently haven't at all), and I will quote it verbatim in following comments.
There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. [1:1]
@surshot56 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. [1:6]
And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? [1:8]
Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? [1:9]
@surshot56 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. [1:10]
But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. [1:11]
And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. [1:12]
@surshot56 So, there. God's saying, “Look at Job, he's a good man and eschews evil.” Satan says “Job's only a good man because you give him all these blessings and good fortune. If you didn't, he'd curse you to your face.” God says, fine, I'll stop protecting him, do what you will to his estate and fortune and we'll see. Continuing:
@surshot56 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly. [1:22]
And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me againsthim, to destroy him without cause. [2:3]
@ChristopherDone "Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason." Job 2:3
"you incited me"
Incited: Urge or persuade (someone) to act in a violent or unlawful way (not suppose to be possible with God)
God and Satan's actions aren't the point. The point is that being righteous is a matter of profound principle, not of convenience or circumstance. Ben has no conscience, never supposed to be the others leader, killed person in charge, did atrocious things throughout (not in the name of Jacob), and Jacob says 'what about you' he's saying "You're corrupt and without conscience." And what does Ben do in reaction? KILLS him. Job, on the other hand, was always a good man, whatever circumstance.
@ChristopherDone Ok fine take that position if you wan't but if you recall Job asked god numerous times why are you doing this to me and God mocked Job like Jacob did to Ben.
@surshot56 God chastised Jacob that it's not his place to judge or question his will, yes. He never learned the reason why in the story, only we the readers know of the conversation between God and Satan (or Jacob and the man in black). If God is ruining your life or your life just sucks (there is no difference in the Christian religion), asking why is irrelevant, you should conduct your life righteously regardless. That's my interpretation, anyway. I'm not a Christian.
@ChristopherDone "God chastised Jacob that it's not his place to judge or question his will, yes."
So Job can't ask why? He just has to take it up the ass because God is God? Your not even a Christian yet you defend the bible reverently? Everyone I know with a half of brain sees this as a despicable action towards a man who played by the rules. As the bible says, "you incited me to ruin Jacob without any reason or cause." Thats all I need to know. Without any reason.
@surshot56 He's free to ask why but it's pointless. For a Christian I'm sure there's no difference to "bad things that happen to me in my life" and the actions of God. When a tsunami happens or your relative gets cancer, you don't ask why it happened, do you? I imagine that's what it's like for Christians and the actions of God. I'm not defending the bible, what are you talking about? I'm interpreting the meaning of it. I don't have to subscribe to it to understand its meaning empathetically.
@surshot56 Nah, Ben Linus was against everything Jacob stood for, Ben was greedy, manipulative and would do anything he could to keep power of the people and the island, He said "What about you" because in his eyes, Ben wasnt his leader.....Richard was.
@manchesterfellow Just so I don't keep getting messaged about this, everyone so far who is agreeing with what Jacob did is either religious or a dumb ass. My comment wouldn't have been voted up if what I said didn't make any sense.
@surshot56 Your comment got voted up because many young people watch Lost too - I they like you don't understand the duality of meaning in Jacob's ironic reply.
@egdqv13234 my point is is that all Ben wanted was some answers that's all. Jacob was an in my opinion still is an asshole for not answering Ben and avoiding him and then with that smug look on his face says what about you?
@surshot56 yeah well what did u expect? it was Ben's choise to stay and obey jacob. and yes that reply ''what about you'' was a little to mutch rough for ben to handle, and besides most off all it wasent just jacobs foult but Bens aswell. Ben was wrong becouse he thought he was the chosen one :) so Jacob knew that. undestand that no matter how Ben was comited to the iland he still wasent the chosen one.
@surshot56 Ofcourse he got killed becouse of Jacob was the protector =) thats why he chose the candidate that can replace him if he gets killed by someone whos defently lost.
@egdqv13234 Where are you getting this "chosen one" information from? Benjamin Linus' personality, his character, is what did this. Ben's lust for power, his jealousy of John Locke, and his own insecurities are what led him to react so badly to Jacob's comment in this scene.
can anyone tell me instrument is used at 1.20/1.21? it's used again at 3.48!! it's an amazing motif for MIB and used for mother and quite a haunting sound. is it a string instrument?
@Raine509 because he had been protecting the island for thousands of years. the candidates are all there to replace him. he knew he had to die sometime and was fully prepared. everyone dies sometime.
@dagodauer Don't forget about 'Mother' in 6x15 when she thanked MiB for killing her and freeing her from her duty of protecting the Island. Because of that, it's plausible that Jacob didn't put up a fight because he knew that the Island had 6 potential protectors so he didn't have to stay anymore.
@Raine509 Let me quote Albus Dumbledore:"To one as young as you, I'm sure it seems incredible, but to Nicolas and Perenelle, it really is like going to bed after a very, very, long day. After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure". After two millenia, Jacob was ready to go to bed. Did it look like he tried to stop Ben? No, and I'm surprised he didn't thank Ben. He set up his candidates and it was time he move on to the next great adventure.
So Jacob and that black smoke posing as John Locke are ancient Egyptian gods or something? and that giant statue above them is Egyptian crocodile god Sobek.
@paskunji its sort of like a way of saying that youve been excluded or havent really been taken into consideration.
for example: your mom gives ice cream to all of your brothers and sisters but doesn't give you any cause maybe you did something wrong. you would then ask her " hey what about me?"
when Locke says: you have no idea what i have gone through to be here...
5 seasons went running through my head of jacks dad, yemi, kates horse, dave, ben seeing his mother, in a split second. my mouth hit the floor when i worked out what had happened really and even to this day i get goosebumps thinking about how incredible this revelation was.
i think it might be the biggest revelation in the whole show really? maybe the sideways reality being a purgatory could rival it
THIS was the highest point in Lost, imho. The most freaking astonishing sequence ever, the culmination of the whole plot. What comes after this was only a conclusion, like a coda in a symphony.
But in the end, all he needed to get off the island was to turn off the source, not kill all the candidates, but he didn't know this till after this. Correct? If the source was left unplugged the island would sink and humanity would disappear since there would be no balance of human corruption and good.
@Despond MiB couldn't find the source unless all of the candidates were dead or he was led to it by a candidate. That's why he said he was searching for years and never found the cave.
@Thepocalypse maybe he's just dumb...and couldn't find the cave. but hey i don't get it, how does the stream dry up when you take the cork out? how did the cave not fill up? and what's with the light, it was so blindening before and when they go in it's nothing...and how did she "make it that way" so the brothers couldn't harm one another - seems pretty straight forward for two males with deep seeded psychological issues to get violent...
When Jacob said "they're coming" it was an act of defience against MIB/fLocke. He obviously meant the candidates and he was letting MIB know that even though he (Jacob) was dying - MIB would still be trapped.
That's why he got mad and kicked him into the fire.
Oh brother, once again, you can see Ben's envy and jealousy of Locke here. He's bitching because he was never allowed to see Jacob and yet Locke gets to see him almost immediately. Yet he hasn't caught on that THIS ISN'T LOCKE, YOU DUMMY!
That moment when you realize he's not John Locke just based on his voice. Terry O'quin is AMAZING.

MyMojosSoDope 3 months ago in playlist More videos from Occlumentie

@MyMojosSoDope That is widely known as the most obvious change the writers made in the series.
They could have covered it up better than they did.
Oh well, I rest of the case that at least what they gave us worked out better than what we had to begin with.
Damon242 3 months ago
@MyMojosSoDope It wasn't in the finale that they do it first, it's in the episode 'Follow the leader' that sets up the season 5 finale.

This idea was also conveyed in "Ab Aeterno" in Season 6 when Jacob told Richard about how men need to choose good over evil by themselves.

i love when flocke said "hello jacob". it's scary.
davilin 4 months ago
He said that because Jacob saved Ben's life when he was a child, Ben could kill Jacob because he was "touched by him", thats what the loophole is.
Dharahion 5 months ago
@Dharahion No, it regards the man in black. He can't kill Jacob on his own, he needs someone to do it for him. But this person needs to be able to get access to Jacob, and so the "loophole" was the man in black assuming the disguise of John Locke (the new leader) and being able to manipulate Benjamin Linus into killing Jacob.
There's a fundamental issue with your theory, in the fact that the loophole was discussed well before Benjamin Linus even existed.
Damon242 5 months ago
@Damon242 I guess you're wrong, did Jacob stop Richard when he was manipulated by MIB? Yes he did because Richard wasn't touched by him yet , Jacob is only vulnerable to the ones he touched. The loophole is something like the Jacob traitors. Jacob talked about loophole way before because he thought he would never be betrayed. The manipulation reffers to "found your loophole"
Dharahion 5 months ago
@Dharahion answer this then;
if Jacob is only vulnerable to the ones he touches, why did he beat the crap out of richard and disarm as he marched to kill him?
And in regards to Ben, Jacob never touched him. When Ben was a child he was taken into the temple and thanks to the scenes in 'LA X', we know that he was healed in the pool. There is nothing to indicate that Jacob was at the temple and touched Ben.
The loophole is that the man in black needed someone else, and someone with access.
Damon242 5 months ago
@Damon242 You explain this:
Dharahion 4 months ago
@Dharahion Ben's blow is what killed Jacob - notice the bleeding to death? His struggling to speak? And his absolute lack of resistance when hitting the fire (living people don't just lie still when burning, they thrash) - Jacob was dead because of Ben stabbing him in the chest.
Ben lost his immortality the moment Ben plunged a knife in his chest.
Jacob never touched Ben, I already mentioned this. So your theory doesn't work anyway.
Damon242 4 months ago
@Damon242 You don't know if Jacob touched ben, anyway he was part of his people.
Dharahion 4 months ago
@Dharahion You can't just make up something and use it as evidence to support your theory.
And Richard wasn't one of Jacob's "people" when he went to kill him in 'Ab Aeterno'.

Rewatching the whole series makes me think differently about this scene. It's like Jacob is saying "yes, what about you, why can't you be the good protector that this island needs?" It's if he's trying to make Ben see his weaknesses and also to challenge Ben to change his ways.

I don't care what jacob's intentions were. He was a manipulating, self-rigeous, prick who played around with so many people's lives with the endgame of resolving his own personal family problems. He was little better than his brother. So he got what he deserved.
OneGaurdian 8 months ago 19
@OneGaurdian No, Jacob wasn't evil. Jacob believed that everyone needed to make their own decisions. He was wise and compassionate, unlike his brother.
Scoonertuna 7 months ago
@Scoonertuna I wouldn't call Jacob 'wise' or 'compassionate'. Jacob was petulant most of the time. He only seemed to grow up and start assessing the situation properly when he started planning towards his own demise.
He admits in 'What They Died For' that the entire situation exists because of his own mistakes.
Damon242 5 months ago
@Damon242 You're right. maybe kind and compassionate were too strong of words to use. I saw him as one of those people who accepted things the way they were and believed that things would get better.
Scoonertuna 5 months ago
@Scoonertuna lol a blind optimist then. I always thought of Jacob as one of those people who complained about things, wanted things to change, but never bothered to do anything about it.

THEM0CK1NGB1RD 1 month ago
@OneGaurdian It's not like he took anyone away from a great beautiful life, they were all miserable and flawed, like he said. If the black smoke would've got away from the island, the whole world would be screwed and evil.
xoxojollyy 5 days ago
@xoxojollyy I'm not arguing against his motivations, but his methods were just as flawed as his 'mother's'. He behaved a lot llike someone who thought it was okay to manipulate things and people the way he did. Despite the things he could do, he was still only human, but at times it seemed like he thought of himself as more. My problem with Jacob was that he talked about people and the good they were capable of when didn't really live up to that idea himself. Not in my eyes, anyways.
OneGaurdian 3 days ago
@OneGaurdian I think he did them a favor, Kate would've eventually gotten caught and went to jail, Jack would've end up like his father, Locke probably would end up killing himself, Sawyer would have been arrested, Sayid life was going downhill, Hugo was cursed, Charlie was an addict, the Kwons were unhappy. Them coming to the island, helped them more than they could ever help it. And like I said before, the whole world would be evil if the black smoke got away.
xoxojollyy 3 days ago
@xoxojollyy Sure, but Michael also ended killing Ana-Lucia and Libby in cold blood. Walt and Ji Yeon both ended up parentless. Ana-Lucia accidently killed Shannon. Then, of course, more than half the passenegrs and crew in the plane died, and a majority of the survivors wound up getting killed later on; a good number of them at the hands his Others. He also allowed Sayid's wife to die, only saving Sayid because he was a canidate.Claire also missed three years of her son's life. Not a fair trade.
OneGaurdian 2 days ago
@OneGaurdian Alot of those things, were not Jacobs fault or doings. Claire going crazy wasn't her fault, she DECIDED to follow her wanna be dad in the jungle, Michael decided to kill Ana-Lucia which lead to him killing Libby. Now,Jacob did think that Walt special, which he was, &should've never left the island. But most of things were "The Others" fault which is most of Bens doings. Now Sayid, yeah Nadia died, his soul mate. But him and Shannon i think belonged together. He got 2 chances at love
xoxojollyy 2 days ago
@xoxojollyy Still, someone who really cared about people would've stepped in and tried to actually do something - but he didn't. Jacob mostly hung back and watched as if he was above it all, when he wasn't. He should've found better ways to bring his canidates to the island than crashing a plane that killed a whole bunch of other innocent people. Before that he was bringing other people to the island knowing exactly what his brother would do and didn't lift a finger to stop him.
OneGaurdian 2 days ago
@OneGaurdian The island brought the people to the island, and the island made the plane crash. All he was was the protector. But yeah I understand that alot of people died, and Jacob did nothing, but their was no way for him to stop smoky.
xoxojollyy 2 days ago
@xoxojollyy He could've tried. people who really want to help their fellow man step in and lend a helping hand, instead of doing a little manipulating here and there and just watch everything go down from the shadows. Anytime he took some sort of action, or showed concern for others, was when he was in danger of losing too many candidates. Nothing that I have seen about this character makes me see him as someone worth blindly following.
OneGaurdian 2 days ago
@OneGaurdian You've got a point there. I have nothing to say back. But he was thinking of the island, and the rest f the world. Those were his intentions, even if he went about them the wrong way.
xoxojollyy 2 days ago
Its funny I started off thinking from his first episode that Ben was just an evil slimy prick nad as the show went on it made me feel more and more sympathetic towards him. To me 2:15 to 3:15 is the final nail in that sympathy coffin. I just felt so bad for him.
taabuu2342 8 months ago
My interpretation of Jacob's response to Ben was that he was testing him. The question "What about you?" is a call for Ben to make a choice, to prove himself one way or the other if he was to play into MIB's hands and kill Jacob. But of course, Jacob had a plan, and Ben murdering him was apart of that.
redrabbitjohnson 8 months ago

This is simply one of the best scenes in Lost. I can completely relate to this scene since I've been dealing with similar issues Ben was going through in this scene. But that's beside the point. Michael Emerson is a phenomenal actor, and even though Ben killed Jacob, it goes to show you how well a show is crafted when you understand why someone commits a horrible act like this. Best. TV. @111fearless1111 That scene in my opinion made Jacob look like an asshole. What about you? That was an insult at its finest. Here is a man who gave his life unquestionably to the divine will of Jacob, and the only response he got was, What about you? Reminds me of the story of Job.
surshot56 1 year ago 15
@surshot56 but jacob did it on purpose, he needed to be killed so that the man in black could be killed, it was a long con
IIXtremeBoxII 11 months ago 3
@IIXtremeBoxII I think that more than wanting the MIB dead, Jacob was tired and realized he was no longer fit to protect the Island. He could never kill the MIB and he was weary of trying to keep the MIB there. So when he finally found his replacements, he could leave without leaving the Island without a protector who could do what he couldn't- kill the MIB.
Wombaggins 10 months ago
@IIXtremeBoxII I also think that he was sincerely sorry for what he did to MIB and that is why he could never kill him. I think he wanted to make amends far more than killing the MIB.
Wombaggins 10 months ago
@IIXtremeBoxII No he didn't, don't you remember the beginning of the episode, Dr. Linus? Miles uses his powers and says right up until the second the knife went through his heart, he was hoping he was wrong about Ben.
GrinningTurtle42 9 months ago
@surshot56 Actually, I don't think it was an insult at all. Ben asks him what is wrong with him, and Jacob repeats his last sentence to him "What about you?". In other words Jacob is saying, THAT is what is wrong with you Ben; your selfish attitude. You are only thinking about yourself.
manchesterfellow 9 months ago
@manchesterfellow He was only thinking about himself when he did what he was told? He was acting selflessly his enitire life and when he asked about himself he gets the privilege of being told hes selfish? I'm not sure I follow your line of thought. Did you miss his story about him serving Jacob unquestionably?
surshot56 9 months ago
@surshot56 First of all surshot, lose the sarcasm. If you are going to address me address me properly.
Now, did Ben serve Jacob unquestionably? He tried to kill John Locke twice - and succeeded once. He returned to the island when banished. It became clear that Ben was being manipulated by MIB for years (dead Mother?) Try to remember the last series. We thought for four seasons that Ben knew everything - he didn't. We found him to be a jealous scared individual craving power. "What about me?"
manchesterfellow 9 months ago
@surshot56 On the surface, yes. But while jacob was hoping he was wrong about ben (to simplify his own plan or further delay MIB), he also knew that allowing ben to kill him would: 1) let MIB think he had won and actually attempt to destroy the island (so jack could stop him) 2) allow himself to appear to the candidates at will to direct his plan of destroying MIB from behind the scenes. It was tragic that Ben gave himself to Jacob and he apparently didn't care, but ben failed to realize (contd)
ashlathelight 9 months ago
@surshot56 that this was all part of a MUCH larger and more ancient plan, which was coming to a head after millenia of stalemates -- and his devotion to Jacob and the misery he experienced was a consequence of how this game was to be played out (i.e. Jacob's rule of no direct intervention - "it's pointless if I have to force them to do anything - why should I have to step in?")
ashlathelight 9 months ago
@surshot56 One could also argue that Jacob was testing Ben by reacting so coldly, to see if he would know right from wrong. and knowing Jacob, it would seem he has a backup plan for either outcome.
ashlathelight 9 months ago
@ashlathelight The why should I have to step in question seems fitting for a lazy so called benevolent being. Which is one of th reasons why i'm not religious anymore. We a person (ben) who didn't ask for any involvement in this sick twisted joke played by Jacob and all he did was remain loyal and obedient to Jacob's will and the only response he got was, "what about you?" Really? Hes an asshole.
surshot56 9 months ago
@surshot56 But Ben did ask for involvement. He asked for involvement when he ousted Widmore to take over the others. The reason Miles tells Ben that Jacob wished he was wrong about Ben is because Jacob knew Ben was selfish. "What was so wrong with me? - What about me?" "What about me" (You Ben, are selfish. You are supposed to be sacrificing your life to protect the source, and all you have thought about is yourself and your power). What about you indeed.
Do you understand the basic story now?
manchesterfellow 9 months ago
@manchesterfellow Does he not have the right to ask that question? What about me? Why is that synonymous with selfishness?
surshot56 9 months ago
@surshot56 You have to remember also though that Jacob, who is almost 2,000 years old, has been raised in the only morality he knows -- protecting the island. To him, the manipulations and games that were played over the centuries were a necessary evil in order to prevent MIB from leaving. Mother died leaving these rules (e.g. cannot harm each other) and Jacob had to handle this potential apocalypse as best he can, even if it costs lives because ultimately the fate of the world is at stake.

ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@ChristopherDone He could have just Ben what was really up. All Ben wanted was to know why Jacob put him through so much stress is that to much to ask? I mean really? You see the religious nut jobs posting in favor of Jacob and thats because they missed the whole point of divine authority. Since Jacob is divine and Ben isn't he can't be challenged. Ben, because he is human can't challenge the authority of Jacob. Its about power. You ever read the story of Job in the bible? Same thing.
surshot56 9 months ago
@ChristopherDone Job is powerless against the destructive nature of God and can't do anything to stand up against God's might and power and must therefore take whatever cruel and unusual punishment he was receiving from God. People often times say oh God was testing Job faith but if you read the damn story thats not what God was destroying Job's life for.
surshot56 9 months ago
@surshot56 It's not about faith, no; it's about integrity. Job was tested by seeing if he still behaves righteously without God's support. Ben was tested the same way, and as we have seen throughout the show, Ben has no integrity, and he settles it by murdering Jacob. Hence, "he was hoping he was wrong about you".
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@ChristopherDone "it's not about faith, no; it's about integrity. Job was tested by seeing if he still behaves righteously without God's support."
I can tell you either didn't read my comment correctly pr your didn't read the bible and i'm inclined to believe both are true judging what you wrote. No where in the story of Job did God test Job to see if he would still behave (I hate when religious people use that word) without his help. God ruined Job without any reason or cause.
surshot56 9 months ago
@surshot56 I read your ignorant comments and I have indeed read the book of Job in the Bible which you clearly have not (and I don't know why you keep saying to people 'have you read the book of Job' when you evidently haven't at all), and I will quote it verbatim in following comments.
There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. [1:1]
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@surshot56 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. [1:6]
And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? [1:8]
Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? [1:9]
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@surshot56 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. [1:10]
But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. [1:11]
And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. [1:12]
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@surshot56 So, there. God's saying, “Look at Job, he's a good man and eschews evil.” Satan says “Job's only a good man because you give him all these blessings and good fortune. If you didn't, he'd curse you to your face.” God says, fine, I'll stop protecting him, do what you will to his estate and fortune and we'll see. Continuing:
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@surshot56 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly. [1:22]
And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me againsthim, to destroy him without cause. [2:3]
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@ChristopherDone "Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason." Job 2:3
"you incited me"
Incited: Urge or persuade (someone) to act in a violent or unlawful way (not suppose to be possible with God)
"to ruin him without any reason"
I rest my case.
surshot56 9 months ago
God and Satan's actions aren't the point. The point is that being righteous is a matter of profound principle, not of convenience or circumstance. Ben has no conscience, never supposed to be the others leader, killed person in charge, did atrocious things throughout (not in the name of Jacob), and Jacob says 'what about you' he's saying "You're corrupt and without conscience." And what does Ben do in reaction? KILLS him. Job, on the other hand, was always a good man, whatever circumstance.
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@ChristopherDone Ok fine take that position if you wan't but if you recall Job asked god numerous times why are you doing this to me and God mocked Job like Jacob did to Ben.
surshot56 9 months ago
@ChristopherDone Since you read the story you would know that God mocked Jacob for not being as powerful as him.
surshot56 9 months ago
@surshot56 God chastised Jacob that it's not his place to judge or question his will, yes. He never learned the reason why in the story, only we the readers know of the conversation between God and Satan (or Jacob and the man in black). If God is ruining your life or your life just sucks (there is no difference in the Christian religion), asking why is irrelevant, you should conduct your life righteously regardless. That's my interpretation, anyway. I'm not a Christian.
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@ChristopherDone "God chastised Jacob that it's not his place to judge or question his will, yes."
So Job can't ask why? He just has to take it up the ass because God is God? Your not even a Christian yet you defend the bible reverently? Everyone I know with a half of brain sees this as a despicable action towards a man who played by the rules. As the bible says, "you incited me to ruin Jacob without any reason or cause." Thats all I need to know. Without any reason.
surshot56 9 months ago
@surshot56 He's free to ask why but it's pointless. For a Christian I'm sure there's no difference to "bad things that happen to me in my life" and the actions of God. When a tsunami happens or your relative gets cancer, you don't ask why it happened, do you? I imagine that's what it's like for Christians and the actions of God. I'm not defending the bible, what are you talking about? I'm interpreting the meaning of it. I don't have to subscribe to it to understand its meaning empathetically.
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@surshot56 Parenthetically I think all the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) have the story of Job.

Michael Emerson, I think that's the guy who plays Ben.He's probably the best actor in Lost, in my opinion.

can someone explain me what does mean the expresion : "what about me"?? pls
paskunji 1 year ago
@paskunji its sort of like a way of saying that youve been excluded or havent really been taken into consideration.
for example: your mom gives ice cream to all of your brothers and sisters but doesn't give you any cause maybe you did something wrong. you would then ask her " hey what about me?"

Why does Jacob say "What about you?"

@MasterKenobi1771 He's asking him his own question and not giving him answers. Just like he had been doing his whole life.

Why does Jacob sat "What about you?"
MasterKenobi1771 1 year ago
Jacob probably knew that he was going to die...
Funny. In the end, it still looks like he's helping his brother regardless of how much MIB hates him.

when Locke says: you have no idea what i have gone through to be here...

@rob87s i had the same images flash through my mind when locke said that. it was definetly the best twist in the show's long history of great twists.

dont get me wrong, the writers did a great job, but instead of "our issues" i would have said "our differences".

Jacob was asking for it - "What about you?" - what kind of response is that to a person who is pissed of at you?

@AsherEarth He was testing Ben. He wanted him to really think about what he was saying.

THIS was the highest point in Lost, imho. The most freaking astonishing sequence ever, the culmination of the whole plot. What comes after this was only a conclusion, like a coda in a symphony.
panglossa 1 year ago 3
But in the end, all he needed to get off the island was to turn off the source, not kill all the candidates, but he didn't know this till after this. Correct? If the source was left unplugged the island would sink and humanity would disappear since there would be no balance of human corruption and good.
Despond 1 year ago
@Despond MiB couldn't find the source unless all of the candidates were dead or he was led to it by a candidate. That's why he said he was searching for years and never found the cave.
Thepocalypse 1 year ago
@Thepocalypse maybe he's just dumb...and couldn't find the cave. but hey i don't get it, how does the stream dry up when you take the cork out? how did the cave not fill up? and what's with the light, it was so blindening before and when they go in it's nothing...and how did she "make it that way" so the brothers couldn't harm one another - seems pretty straight forward for two males with deep seeded psychological issues to get violent...
miavaso 1 year ago
@Despond He did need to kill the candidates.....
youboob6022 1 year ago
When Jacob said "they're coming" it was an act of defience against MIB/fLocke. He obviously meant the candidates and he was letting MIB know that even though he (Jacob) was dying - MIB would still be trapped.
That's why he got mad and kicked him into the fire.

Oh brother, once again, you can see Ben's envy and jealousy of Locke here. He's bitching because he was never allowed to see Jacob and yet Locke gets to see him almost immediately. Yet he hasn't caught on that THIS ISN'T LOCKE, YOU DUMMY!
