It's getting cold here in Washington DC. I've always wanted to make this since 2 years. But never could cz I was living in a country where you couldn't find the Korean chili powder. Now I'm in the US, so i bought the Korean chili powder ( couldn't find the Kosari).... IT turned out sooooooooooooooooooo AWESOME......today is so cold too... and this soup is just perfect for it !!!!! THANK-YOU Maangchi..
2 years of waiting to make this was worth it !!!! Lots of love and thanks !
I love your channel and aeriskitchen channel both make great Korean food! Thanks for uploading this :D After watching Shining Inheritance I really want to try Yuk Gae Jang so much!
@titenanasse awesome! Welcome to my cooking channel. Whatever you make, please check out the recipe on my website. I post more detailed info. along with the photos of the ingredients and tips.
I LOVE YOU! i learned how to finally properly to cook my FAVORITE dish- soon dubu from you & now my new favorite! beef and vegetable soup! :D perfect insider for korean cooking!
I like a variant of this in a more traditional stew. Coat stew meat in flour, salt, pepper and cayenne pepper. Braise meat in sesame or olive oil...add garlic just before adding broth. Add traditional vegetables, red wine and any amount of hot spices and/or vegetables depending on taste.
Kosari! I never knew the Korean word! All I knew was that it was Fern Shoot. I can buy it at the Korean Market. All my life I LOVE it! It has a beefy flavor. I think some people refer to it as "Fiddle Fern." The soup looks so delicious.
Please cook Korean "black" spaghetti next time. I forgot the name so I just refer to it as black spaghetti. I think you know what i mean : ) Kamsahamnida!
@JackReacher2 haha, Korean black spaghetti? Yes, I know what you mean! It's called jjajangmyeon. I posted the recipe long long time ago. You have to check the recipe on my website if you want to make it. "black bean noodles"
@iaccik I used to live in Toronto, but I'm living in NY now. Actually I meant toran stem. I found it at a Korean store after I posted this video. Check my "about" page on my website. Thank you!
I'm sooooo hungry right now....You made this look easy and fun to make, I think I'll try to make it instead of waiting to visit my parents to eat it again, thank you.
Thanks for sharing this recipe. Juk Gae Jang is my favorite Korean dish. At local Korean restaurants, they serve this soup with clear noodles. "Kumsa Mee Daad" :)
OK - after watching your video - I am now into the adventure of making this soup tmw. My Korean boyfriend says he wants to have this and I am so glad that you have this receipe! You are the BEST!
maangchi! hehe i luv your cooking!! by the way...you should be able to find it in most grocery stores( non-korean) i believe this "toRan" is taro root. it isn't very hard to find. tell me if this is not the vegetable you are speaking of!!
Just found your youtube channel...really enjoy your cooking. Was wondering if this recipe can be used to make Kam Ja Tang (Pork Bone soup). Can't find any recipes on the internet. What is the difference between using the hot pepper powder vs the paste?
for this yukgaejang recipe, you will have to use hot pepper flakes instead of hot pepper paste. If you use hot pepper paste , it will make the soup thick and give some hot pepper paste's strong flavor. Kamjatang recipe is different from this recipe. I'm going to post kamjatang recipe someday.
oh yeah? When I went to Korean spa in LA, I ordered patbingsu (shaved ice with sweet red beans and chunks of fruit) and miyeokguk (seaplant soup)! : )
Thank you so much for this recipe and video! This dish reminds me of my korean ex-girlfriend, she used to cook this for me. Brings back so many wonderful memories. Thanks again! :)
Hi Maangchi i like your video a lot, i just have a question can you put shiitake mushrooms in yuk gae jang, and also can you use iether one of hot pepper flakes and hot pepper powder. Were station in Osan Korea before and man we just missed the korean food soooo much. Thanks
Yes, you can put shiitake mushrooms in Yukgaejang, and also you can use either hot pepper flakes or hot pepper powder. Let me know how your Yukgaejang turns out. Yeah, certain food reminds us of good memories!
Hi maangchi! One question. Is toran the same thing as taro root? I tried to buy it in the market today and the owner handed me frozen taro root balls.
well no i dont have any good recipes. i was wondering if you could make one up or something. You cook really good, and im sure you would do just fine trying to cook an spanish korean style. I was wondering if you could do tamales in korena style.
if i cant find the korean hot powder, what could I use in place of it? I have very hot cayenne powder, would that work? this looks so good, and inexpensive to make. thankyou
that looks really good! i've never made my beef vegetable soups spicy, but i think i'll try this. also, just as a sidenote, i would definately add some fresh cubed tomato at the end...because i love tomatoes. :D
This is one of my favourite food, yuk gae jang, i used to have it in australia, in one of the korean restaurant called Seoul Ria, it was so delicious, i loved it, and now i can try to make it my self :) Thank you so much :)

I tried this recipe, and I ended up with a sweet taste to the soup. It didn't taste anything like the one I had at a restaurant. Ingredients seem similar, but I don't remember having onions in the yukgaejang I had at the restaurant. Did I do something wrong? I followed the recipe exactly. Is it normally like this?
Greetings from Charlotte, NC. Your video's are great! My girlfriend is Korean and I can't wait to cook some of your dishes for her. She will be so happy!!
There are not many Korean restaurants where I live but I was wondering if there is a Chinese name for the kosari vegetable. If not, is there a alternative vegetable that you can recommend?
First and foremost, thank you for uploading your video in Youtube! I learned a lot from your videos. We don't have much of Korean restaurants here in SG, mostly dominated by Chinese and Japanese,so I'm learning how to cook Korean food myself. Korean food is very healthy in a sense - main reason why I love/like it (family/friends included).:)
I had saw your cooking Korea Foods Video. It is so simple and easy to cook. I had started learn how to make Kimchi. I very2 like Korea Foods and wish to learn more how to cook Korea Foods. I also interesting and wish to learn how to speak, reading and writing about Korea Language. Can u teach me?
My name is Wenn Chang from Kuching,Sarawak (Malaysian). Now stayed and worked in Singapore.
im watching your video since I was in Europe and now I have moved to Toronto GTA :-). I have tried some of the Korean restaurants as well. Do you recommend any good restaurant in down town Toronto? Thanks waiting for your reply and also thanks for wonderful recipe, I'm gonna try this soon ;-)
Welcome to Toronto! : ) I used to go to "Bookchang dong soondubu" restaurant and "Jin mi rak". The restaurants are in Korea town near Christie subway. Think about me when you eat food there. Bookchangdong soondubu serves very delicious soondubu jjigae, and Jin mi rak restaurant serves good and cheap samgyupsal (pork belly)with lots of vegetables.
Thank you (kamsamita) for the immediate reply. Sure I will think about you :-) even I talked about your website to a Korean lady who runs Korean wow wok restaurant in Mississauga. I love their Bulgogi and soups but they have less variety of beef, I love beef in Asian cuisine. I shall try your recommendations and give you the feedback afterward. Thanks again and have a sunny and warm weekend :-)
The 1 thing i dont like about yuk gay jang is how long the green onions, kosari, and meat is. They feel like they're noodles so i always slurp them :P.
I live in a very small city and we do not have many asian ingredients. I was wondering : is the hot pepper powder the same as chili pepper powder? I live in Quebec and sometimes, the translation from English to French is totally different...so the ingredient's names are changed.
I think so, red hot chili pepper is hot pepper flakes or powder. In korean, it is called "go chu ga ru". Check out my website and visit my ingredient blog. I posted the picture of hot pepper flakes there. Thanks
Hi,Ms Maangchi, can we use chicken/pork instead of beef?cause my family don't eat beef. and should we boil the chicken/pork for 30-40 minutes as well with the onion inside??tq
hi, hot and sour soup is not korean style soup, but I know how to make delicious chinese style of hot and sour soup. I will think about starting to post my favorite food from other cultures. Thanks!
Just made this and it was delicious!!!

im watching your video since I was in Europe and now I have moved to Toronto GTA :-).

Hi!

Thanks

Hi,Ms Maangchi, can we use chicken/pork instead of beef?cause my family don't eat beef. and should we boil the chicken/pork for 30-40 minutes as well with the onion inside??tq
fangyen 3 years ago
yes, you can replace beef with chicken. We don't use pork to make Yukgaejang though.
Cook chicken for a long time and take all meat off the bones. Then tear the meat instead of using a knife and set it aside.
Put all vegetables in the stock and boil it. Just before serving, you can add the chicken meat. Good luck with your cooking!
