  • Well Said Tom; as Usual!

  • It would be easier if everyone spoke the language that most people speak. Other than that, a few people can translate for the masses. Videos and such. Is there anything better that people can learn other than a second language?

  • what is going on abut kool-aid? explain

  • Looks like you're pushing that on his view. I posted a reply to the above person.

  • Maimi is a 3rd world country period, if you have been you know it

  • You don't see sign's in German, Italian, Chinese's every were do ya ..... I think not

Theses people came to build a life in America not change it... so open your eyes people before, before we as people and a culture are pushed out of our very existence.

  • Americans are people the want embrace our American culture and the American way life, this has been this way for 100's of years, during all this time English is spoken language, these criminals i.e. illegal aliens want to change this.., they are just to lazy learn our language period... but they like are English printed money!!!! Humm funny how that works!!!!

  • People should be damn well free to speak 6 different languages if they choose but the federal and local governments should not print forms/documents in any language except English. Immigrants, legal or otherwise, should communicate officially in English, the language of the land. We don't do it for Germans, Italians or any other and they have their parades and 'Days' and no one complains because they are otherwise assimilated into our society. We cannot have two countries. Get in or get out!

  • Bilingual countries don't work? Ireland (Gaelic & English), Belgium (Flemish & French) and Switzerland (French, German, Italian) don't work as countries?

  • Too bad I'll only be 17 in 2008. My parents will definitely vote for you, though! And you have my moral support.

  • I support English as the national language. If you or I went to a remote (non-tourist) area of a spanish-speaking country, we would not expect there to be someone in every store and office willing and able to provide interpreter services for free. Ridiculous! We would simply hire an interpreter or at the very least go the $6 for a dictionary!

  • Congressman Tancredo is right. This is the USA and English should be the national language. I'm angry that whenever I call any company that I have to 'Push 1 for English'. Government forms in Spanish, Spanish signs in restaurants and everywhere else. We don't do this for other nationalities, but then we aren't being overrun with other nationalities. It must unnecessarily cost government and businesses many millions of dollars to print everything in two languages.

  • his italian family, like my own, assimilated into american and learned the language and culture. that's immigration at its best. what we have now....is immigration at its worst. it needs to be fixed.

  • Yes, but I'll bet your family didn't completely cut off your family ties in Italy or deny Italian culture. Because you wanted to become an American citizen, you accepted American culture & learned it. I have no problem with immigrants learning english, it would benefit them. But all this cut from the past stuff is what bugs me. To know more than one language is a good thing & I'm betting while your family learned english, they didn't stop speaking Italian to each other & other Italian Americans.

  • with respect to the importance of maintaining a personal interest in ones former culture, you're absolutely correct. however, that former culture must never impose itself nor take priorety over american culture.

  • Don't remember your country was founded by immigrates, but go on support your Idiot president and his stupid ideas of immigration, and what about english, there are other more beautiful languagues such as romance (french, spanish, italian) come on!!!

  • look up what Language THE FOUNDNG FATHERS and immigrants spoke...why arent you writing in spanish?

    get a brain

  • we support u Tom

  • the beauty of a language doesnt matter. look at german, always a successful country (and yes this includes during the Third Reich as Hitler was a great statesman) with one of the ugliest languages ever. a country should not change their documents because they're not pretty. what the hell are you thinking? and by the way, this isn't immigration, it's smuggling of people. illegal shit. BUILD A WALL!

  • It's such a shame to listen to this crap, NO WONDER WHY THE world opinnion of the USA is so horrible, your government can't see beyond their noses, it's ok close all of your borders, allienate from the rest of the world and live your little dream of facilities, plasma tv's and new cars and cell phones

  • His ignorance is a major weakness. If he focuses to much on the border issue he will alienate hispanic/lation conservatives

  • we are americans. we must not be segregated as whites/blacks/hispanics. that's the point. its about the assimilation of all into american culture. we are americans, not whites, not blacks and not hispanics.

  • thank you sir, there really are people that can use their brains in this world

  • He's just common sense at its finest!

  • Bilingual countries don't work, wow!!! Netherlands, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland are not working?? this is the most stupid thing I ever heard from Tancredo, I don't know why is on this website.

It's incredible to see that there's people how thinks that speaking 1 language is better than speak 2. I speak English, Spanish and I'm learning French!

  • i really dont think socialism works either.

  • bboooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There is a word for polititions like this.

    Ethnocentric.

Make no mistake. I belive that people should be able to speak English, but making it alaw would make those who speak other laungages feel like second class citizens. Speaking English is a tradition. And that the way it should stay.

  • I love this guy, too bad hes a major underdog.

  • This man should be the next President of the United States. He has his thumb on the pulse of the American people. He voices our frustration and apathy with the current system of unaccountability in the Executive branch of government. Donate to his campaign! Let your voice count. It only counts if you donate!

Protect your countrymen America! Protect America!

  • Uh....no.....not so much.

  • I love that there are so many cultures in this country. Everyone can communicate among each other however they wish. I am encouraging my children to learn several languages; my 11 year old even wants to be a translator when she grows up. The OFFICIAL language of this country, however, should be English. If someone wants to move here, learning to speak the language should be a requirement for citizenship. If I were to move my family to another country, I'd make sure I know their language.

  • English should be a requirement for citizenship, period. However, for a working immigrant with a temporary visa or a permenant residency that is unreasonable to ask.

  • What a fu***er, it seems he doesn't even know what he is talking about.

  • People like you "pendejo" is why people support these changes. Enjoy your trip back to wherever the hell you came from. Better be legal.

  • Of course I'm legal in this country. And I also pay taxes. And I had to pay to get a Visa to work here. I did that because there wasn't any American that can do the job I'm doing. So, I can't see why is wrong to speak two languages. (I speak three. How many languages do you speak?) And Tancredo saying Miami is a third world country? Has he traveled out of the USA in third world countries like Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina? Have you been out of the USA?

  • He said that Miami is a "third world country" because there are many people speaking Spanish & Creole. This is stupidity, look at NY w/Italian speaking people, LA w/many Spanish speakers. Miami, like many cities in the world has good parts & bad parts. This "third world" comment is bullshit. I know Haitians and Cubans in Miami who speak perfect English. They know that it's a part of being an American citizen. There shouldn't be any problem w/ people speaking 2,3,4 languages.

  • thank god there's not even a logistical chance that tancredo would be nominated. Tancredo would be the worst candidate in every issue/aspect. I'm from Colorado and I have to say that Tancredo disgusts me.

  • If you do not believe that people should be able to communicate in whatever language they please, then you do not believe in freedom. It is that simple.

  • people can communicate however the hell they want... however in the public arena, let's speak English. Learn spanish and go evesdrop on some spanish conversations. It's very enlightening.

  • This guy is an absolute freak. "Bilingual countries don't work." Wha? Has he ever been anywhere but the US?

  • It's a sad day in America where one can promote legal discrimination.

Making English the official language prevents anyone who speaks and writes any other language than english unable to participate in government. They can't obtain a driver's license, they can't vote, they can't officially can't function on paper because all of the words will be in English...is this fair?

  • yes it is, The United States is or at least was a English speaking country. I am sick and tired of seeing movies in other languages in the very beginning, I am sick and tired of hearing press 2 for...whatever language. You want to live in the U.S., you want to stay here, then learn English, plain and simple. we shouldn't have to change for you. if you want to come here, then you should have to learn English to live here. period.

  • the US was a country that spoke many dialects. English speaking immigrants chose to force their language on the natives and the slaves they captured. English speaking immigrants were successsful in assimilation then, but they will not be now. It is inevitable and the WORLD is too small to think one language will prevail.

Now, since you live in a country that has hurt and defamed others for many years, I see why you feel the way you do.

  • Ok, then. Let's check the paper trail, My mother came from Panama LEGALLY, and learned english from sesame street. People like you who think that if parents are immigrants then you are too. I've got a birth certificate that says I'm American. And I'm sure Tom does also. ILLEGAL is the issue...

  • Yeah, Switzerland is quite the economic and military superpower. Please, I'm sure that if it came down to it, they'd have to borrow white flags from France.

  • Superpower? What does that have to do with "working country". I think you're getting off trail. Yes, if you are asking for who's got the bigger club, you can proudly say America. Ignorance is lack of knowledge... I disagree about open borders though with you and I am sad to say that if the best solution is a fence to keep people out, so be it...

  • Our economy clearly needs these individuals. We have full employment despite all of these illegals in our country. We need an immigration policy that addresses the market needs for labor and security. Most of the concerns about language are just being raised by people who are intolerant to people of different cultures sharing our country.

  • Actually, since everyone in Switzerland keeps a rifle in their house, they'd be well equipped to fend off any invader. I know, I know, facts are so problematic.

  • The fact is all it would take is complete isolation and their capacity to defend would be nearly destroyed. Rifles do no good without something coming out the barrel. If the U.S. was somehow completely pushed within our borders, we still have production and logistical capabilities. I'm sure there would be much turmoil as different languages and cultures tried to communicate with eachother against an attack.

  • Yeah, I love the France bashing. Doesn't anyone remember how much France has done to help this country throughout our ENTIRE history. Of course France had the sense to not support our war in Iraq like every other country in the world except lapdogs like England. I LOVE FRENCH FRIES!!

  • Because he's Right. Not English Only; English Officially...

  • Yes, we must hold English together. You know, that language that has remained pristine and unchanged over time? Oh, wait, it hasn't--it's shifted, hybridized, varied over time and regions.

Of course, Tancredo called Miami a third-world country, which indicates he doesn't understand what a third-world country is. Why is this guy running for president?

  • Let's list some "unstable" officially multilingual countries:

    Canada

    Belgium

    India

    Luxumbourg

    South Africa

    Malaysia

All seem to be holdin' together pretty well. Mr. Tancredo can tell me all about how he was right when Canada falls apart next week.

As for a recent country with 1 shared official language in recent history? How about Yugoslavia circa 1991. They had one official language.

  • You got that right. I just moved out of there its not the USA anymore. I was yelled at by a Cuban homeless guy for speaking english while walking down the street.

  • Do you need a hug?

  • No, just a few thousand miles of fence.

  • Go ahead. Stick your head in the sand just like we always have on immigration. You can't hold back the flood gates of change in this world. You can either offer good people a way to come here legally or they will come here ILEGALLY and live under the table.

  • good people have never spray painted my fence before. could you send me the memo where that changed?

  • SithLegion, So one crazy homeless guy means Miami isn't part of the US any more? Yeah whatever. There are plenty of Cubans & Haitians in Miami who speak perfect English.

  • That came here legally,DUH!

  • DUH. Any idea how hard it is to get over here legally for many latin americans. The demand is there for their services....so you can keep them illegal if you want, if that will keep your town whiter and more English speaking. Unless you are Iroquis, Cherokee, Apache, etc your family came over here as an immigrant, period. I don't think the Spanish, French & British colonists took out immigrant visas before coming here.

  • India is multilingual, & is holding together pretty well.

  • The reason India holds together is because it is a partitioned country. Each province in India is semi-autonomous with it's own language and culture. India is more like the EU than a country like America. Having a common language is always a good thing. It's okay to be multi-lingual but there must always be a common tongue.

  • Go Tancredo

  • You go Tom! English is the glue that keeps the country together.
