Yes, we made the video several years ago but actually the main issues remain the same and the majority of GPS units have the same basic functions. Most manufacturers (e.g. Garmin) have added more mapping options and smartphones have come a long way, though mostly the software apps are very similar to the one shown in the video.
I was a little taken-aback by the type of GPS handhelds shown; but, ofcourse, this vid goes back to (circa) 2008, and, today, the available sets are a million light years in advanced phenotype and technotype. Interesting vid nonetheless.
There have been a few developments since we made this video, though the main principles we describe still stand. The Road Angel has been replaced by the Memory-Map Adventurer 2800 that has the key functions of the Road Angel in a smaller neater device with better battery life. SatMap have launched a whole series of maps for other countries and its battery life is better too. ViewRanger and other apps are available for iPhones, Android and Symbian mobiles.
You would need to add Garmin Mapsource mapping with detailed road maps of the country (or part of the country) you are in. So the eTrex has to have enough memory (e.g. a microSD card slot) and you have to buy that additional mapping (e.g. the Topo mapping has roads included). Then it will give road directions, on screen only, no voice.
Is that the Road Angel 7000? I want to get a GPS and electronic map, but I dont go hiking as often as you professionals (usually through the New Forset or around the Pubecks) so thought I could get something I could use in the car as well.
satmap are now going international. they've covered france and other european countries in detailed mapping. austrailia and USA are on they're way too.
Yes it would have been nice to go into more detail but we had to squeeze it all into 10 mins. We might do another video on the SatMap specifically, especially as they have new online mapping options now.

Do the ETREK devices have any basic road following functions? Not worried about the Speed Camera warnings etc.
