  • @Xolin11 That's Blade. He does it a lot. Watch some videos of him in the Wayne Shorter Quartet.

  • What beats are those horn hits on. Any body know the sequence. It sounds like a 4 bar repeating phrase but I cant figure it out. Thanks anybody

  • How can someone not like this..

  • wooa!!! He's one of the top out there!!

  • What i find just as fascinating is that Blade changes his grip on the drumstick in his left hand 4 times during this short clip...

    any drummer care to enlighten?

  • @whyarepeoplesounkind Different things are easier in matched or traditional grip and some guys just find one or the other more comfortable for playing certain things.

  • brain you are a fuckn sick and twisted human being

  • incrível!

  • What a creative and positive drummer! Amazing. I saw him with Wayne Shorter here in Oslo a few years ago, and I will never forget his performance!

  • Not sure where I've been all these years... but Brian Blades is definitely my "new" favorite drummer!

  • I love how you can hear him screaming in ecstacy in the background, no way you can't love that mans passion

  • 6 people missed the like button cause they were busy jackin off to blade's sensation!

  • EPIC.

  • He can play!

  • this was one of the coldest drum solos Ive heard.... for real

  • My god...I've seen a lot of drum solo here and there, but this is probably the sickest!I get shivers down by back every time I hear it!Thanks Brian,thanks...

  • what the hell? this man has the punchiest 18" kicks in the world

  • @ManBearJTS man, i hate to break it to you, but he's playing a 16 in this clip. so it's even crazier.

  • 0:07 sickest lick! just lands right on that hit off of it too. great drumming

  • Damn!

  • those are some SPLASHY hihats

  • I play this 1:40 at the end of a tough day and it makes me feel like a human being again. The man is a genius.

  • samjazz you are being a real dick not posting this whole song

i mean, come on first you post the song up to the bridge section of JR's solo then we get a 1:40 seconds...JUST POST THE DAMN SONG!

  • One of the coldest perhaps...

  • I really got bloody goosebumps.... incredible... the FEELING.

  • i can't stop watching this video. dude is tooooo funky. but was anybody else dying from laughter at him yelling like a caveman or sum shit all thru his solo lmao

  • i will never tire of this video

  • Amazing! :-) I have to transcribe this immediately!

    xJ

  • fuck

  • i though I was a good drummer until i heard brian blade

  • i would love to hear this kind of sound with the indien "crazy talent" Amrat Hussain

    that would be something !

  • WoW !

  • Sick

  • ive never seen anyone being so supportive to an drummer playing a solo like joshua redman

  • oh man I can't take this. it's so... ohhh :'D

and I never noticed brian plays matched grip too... first 6 seconds of the video :O

  • wow. awesome performance

  • i heard him with the chick corea trio (christian mcbride being the bass player), and he made my ears orgasm. no hyperbole. total heavenly sound.

  • yea lol i saw em in toronto

  • I go crazy with this man playing the drums! Is like a heart playing!!!! I'm your fã Blade!

  • Brian blade,Chris dave,Deatoni parks man.

  • best jazz drummer of our time, fuck yeah!

  • I'm going to assume those 6 "dislikes" were just an accident. How on earth could anyone dislike this video?!

  • one of the few drummers to have technique and groove

  • Nice chops he's got there!!

  • Funny that my dad went to high school with the Blade Brothers... Rythmic Sugar

  • i try and watch this once a day

  • questo la musica la sente

  • I just simply couldnt stand still watching this and freaking together with brian, i saw him live in amsterdam with dave binney, and it was a serious religous expierence.

    what a mind .... !

  • I love how into it he gets!!! It so legit

  • I never tire of hearing this! It's grooving al the way thru..

  • Brian Blade plays similar to Harvey Mason i.e. Herbie Hancock "Headhunters" George Benson's "Breezin & In Flight" albums.

  • @eric2181965 Seriously? I'm not getting that comparison...

  • this guy is great!!! check out chris coleman if you like this guy

  • Man. That's just nasty.

  • Hey Brian! What it do man.. This Is a shout from your hometown friends, Michael and Sereca Henderson... Lookin' forward to you coming home soon for a session!!

  • Brian Blade, one cool cat

  • Brian Blade is bad for the environment because he encourages other drummers to burn their drums, which releases toxins into the atmosphere....He's totally bringing a melodic beatdown on the drums....His skills hurt so nicely....The man's a genius!! Music oozes from his pores!

  • Brian Blade!! Sensacional!! Tecnica e Muito Feeling!!!

    Amazing Drummer!!

    Raone Drummer

  • fuck yeah!

    brian blade as a god!

  • I didn't know Norbit played drums.

  • I love his facial expressions.

  • 0:41-0:46 is my favorite part :)

  • @trumpetgirl5 Mine is at :32, where Brian yells like a warrior and jumps off his drum throne twice!

  • Bad.....Ass

  • As soon as I heard this, I ran down to the basement and got on my kit to beautifully and perfectly reproduce this solo except it didn't dam well work okay!

  • @Jay435 I know how you feel, man!

  • Beast.

  • Sick!!

  • Redman.. Nice!

  • where can i find this entire song on video???

  • @sandovaln "Joshua Redman- Jazz Crimes (Live)" It's in the related videos.

  • OmG

  • groove....straight groove. his seamless flow is unmatched

  • I love how seamlessly he switches from matched to traditional

  • Brain blade has a wallet that says 'Bad Motherfucker" on it.

  • @danzenie lmao!

  • this is pure heart! Pure music.... Not just "midi-drummin'"...

  • ooh! That was tASTY!

  • I cannot believe I can't rate this 5 stars.

  • Canopus? It's a Gretsch Round Badge from the 60".The bass is a 16 converted tom.

  • @twincrows yeah thats what im thinking. what ever it is, i want that kick drum lol

  • What is this? It's great, but is the break 3/4 (6/8) or?

  • i'm pretty sure it just stays in 4/4, but the ostinato that redman keeps played is syncopated so that it makes it seems that the beat is in another place then it actually is

  • i'm pretty sure its just in 4/4, its just that the ostinato that redman and sam are playing makes it seem like the beat is somewhere else

  • yep. think groups of 3 quavers/ dotted crotchets, resting the first quaver.

  • 67, heard them all & I still get blown away with the feel & space of a GREAT DRUM SOLO & this is one of them.

That is one slick solo Blade, Good on ye Mate

    Will

  • I guess there's a reason that my new private teacher told me to check him out. He has a great unique style, for one.

  • Never get tired of Blade's playing. Some people are just born to do what they do.

  • 16 inch bass?

  • 15, its a canopus bop/club kit!

  • Tune name is "Jazz Crimes"

  • what's the tune called pls?

  • so much care for the pocket. at the same time animalising. wow blade.

  • @cdc7891 Perfect description. What a great clip - sheer insanity!

  • So much better than the studio....

    Josh!

  • wooooooooooo!

  • Brian Blade is the coldest Jazz drummer I've ever seen,he was also the 1st one I'd ever seen, and none have come close to him since that first show circa 1994. Yep, I said it.

  • @enochisreal Yea man, he is definitly my favorite drummer of the 90s and 21st century. Everything he does is sooooo dope and prodigical (haha, if that makes sense to you). He is an old school artist living in the new world, that has adapted and reinvented the way of play jazz!!!

  • @enochisreal Yeah Brian Blade is the man, but saying no one comes close is a little ignorant. Antonio Sanchez is a goddamn monster, and every bit as ground breaking.

  • @KrummyBear hummmm antonio sanchez is no way as good as blade in my point of view... he's more technical and not much "organic" and he's not groovy for me :) but many ideas and all that stuff for sure... but blade is just an animal.... he's got the body (groove) and the head (ideas).

  • @enochisreal I like him too. That's why I'm watching this video but alas, you're trippin'.

Terreon Gully, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Bernard Purdie

  • @enochisreal I like him too. That's why I'm watching this video but alas, you're trippin'. No disrespect at all. Just a little barbershop back and forth.

Terreon Gully, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Bernard Purdie

  • @enochisreal I saw him with the Chick Corea & John McLaughlin Five Peace Band in Austin. I agree, some of the best drumming I have ever witnessed.

  • i love brians faces hahaha

    real musician

  • Brian Blade's heartbeat is the rhythm. this is IT

  • Behold the kick drum of death.

  • 0:35 - 0:38 kick drum glory

  • Brian has resurrected jazz in these tone deprived times

  • one of the best youtube drumming videos for sure...

  • @RLaupert depends on what kind of music you like :) but i agree!

  • man I love Brian Blade, he's so great!

  • brian blade el mejor del mundo.

  • damn!

  • baddest fool on the scene

  • I am a total sucker for this "sec" type jazz fusion sound, especailly in conjunction with the keyboeards. Does anyone have suggestions for other bands / artists to check out?

  • George Duke is a good one. Ima bass player mostly so guys like stanley clarke, victor wooten, etc. There is an awesome collaboration CD from a bunch of beastly musicians called Vertu. But if none of that hits the spot what I did was go to iTunes and turn on the genius feature and listen to some of the people they have in the sidebar. Hope that helps some.

  • Check out The George Lesiw Band- they play every wednesday in New Haven, CT.

Also from the New Haven area, a new group called Kung Fu

  • try chris potter. his live stuff w/ underground is sick. also look at gratitude (still potter). if keys is what you like, medeski martin and wood are sweet and stanton moore is cool as well less jazzy tho. the bad plus are crazy good, dont just look at their pop song covers, look deeper you will be happy. let me know what you think.

  • Older, but check out Grant Green.

  • They call it soul jazz.

  • that's a round-badge

  • haha his face is hilarious when he drums

but whatever makes you amazing haha

  • that was ILLLL. amazing song too. jazz crimes?

  • Incredible! haha never ceases to amaze me! Hes so fluent and smooth! Awesome.

  • hell yes

  • nice drumming :)

  • OMFG 1:12 fucking powerful

  • What a great drummer.

  • Brian is no doubt unique and hot as hell. What a great drummer...

  • man i remember watching this like 3 years ago and being unable to move.. glad to see nothing has changed

  • BAAAAM So awesome!!!!

  • ....................

  • yo brian sherman arnold here , just want to say that ur right about the mistake i had made.i just seen ur clip it is musically awsome.ill try to post another and do it right this time.... thanks.

  • can't stop watching this...BB along with Chris Daddy Dave are definitely the most soulful drummers outthere. They made me approach playing drums in a different and more spontaneous way..truly inspiring musicians..no matter who they paly with they got their unique sound though they never overplay like many cats do..outstanding

  • brian blade is probably the most exciting, and definitely the most musical drummer aliver

  • I saw Brian in a concert with the Redman trio, and there were moments i forgot to breathe.. it was that beautiful. Best concert in my life.. Brian Blade could actually be the best musician alive.

  • How do u get that snare sound, How do You Tune it like that?

  • he is hitting rim shots

  • yeah i know, i asked how he tune´s it and what kinds of skin he uses

  • I don't know exactly so, please don't get offended. Single ply coated on top, clear on bottom. Tune the bottom an octave higher than the top. The top head should be have a nice crack, but NOT too tight like a lot of drummers like to do. The key is bottom head gives it a higher sound, (& more articulate ghost notes) particularly w/ a rim shot. Also, I see this too often. Make yer wires are on straight and NOT too tight, check that either side is even. Ofcourse the drum itself is a major factr too

  • Brian Blade is my #1 influence! When i think of Funky, Gritty, Dirty, Stank beats hes the man!

  • i think that bass drum is smaller than the floor tom lol

blades is one of the only jazz drummers left with a somewhat original sound

  • this is the sole reason for the word 'win'
