man i really wish atari 2600 7800 5200 2800,nes,dreamcast were still in stores i mean like if they brought em back or like atari released a new system to me that would be kinda cool
Who wouldn't love Atari? Atari 2600s sell like hotcakes on ebay, even for common models (like the 4-switch models of the early '80s). I own a 6-switch model form 1978 myself. The bad thing is that I cannot play it, because my joysticks are all broken (damn those tabs!)
@VaderNES There is still some company/companies making new imitation 2600 Joysticks for use with the old hardware. Yes, that is how popular these things still are. Speaking of which...shame Atari never released the 2700, a 2600 with remote controllers and slick-looking black case. If only they could have found a way to stop the remote-control-joysticks from opening garage doors...
@RawSteelUT Actually the 2800 didn't come out until October of 1983 in Japan, rears after the American release of the 2600, and months after the release of the Famicom in July of '83.
They just changed it. Maybe for copyright issues. This thing also failed in Japan because the Famicom (NES to everyone else) was not only cheaper, but had superior graphics and sound (plus it had a near arcade perfect version of Donkey Kong and Nintendo's own Popeye the Sailor Man game)
Fun fact: The word "Atari" is actually taken from a traditional Japanese board game called "Go". It loosely translates as "Prepare to be attacked!" Maybe that contributed to the lack of sales?
@figment1988 No, it isn't. It's the Japanese version of the Seasr Video Arcade II which is a much cooler looking system with red LEDs and buttons instead of toggles. It's 200 better.
They probably changed the name simply because it was a different model. The 2600 was officially a "CX-2600" or "CX-2600A". This design was significantly different, so it got another model number.
It wasn't being marketed in the same territory as the 2600 so using the same name wasn't necessary.
Actually, it's different in a number of ways. First of all, the controllers were combination joystick/paddle controllers, so you didn't have to buy them separately. Also, the system had 4 controller ports for 4-player games like Warlords, unlike the 2600 which had to work around the the 2 ports by having each pair of paddle controllers end with one plug.

WOW!! why the extra 200???
Anyways, I would imagine Atari fit the Japanese market well. The word Atari is japanese anyways.

Too bad they didn't release it until a couple months after Nintendo's Famicom... (not to mention Sega's SG-1000)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
The Japanese were too smart to waste their time on such a system, and decided to create something better, stronger, faster.
Nintendo NES.

i heard you can plug a sega genesis controller in an atari 2600 and the games will run perfectly

I don't own a Mega Drive. I know that you can do that.

@st1ka
Are you implying it wasn't a hit in the U.S.? Cause you're dead wrong if that's the case.
EmeraldWarrior420 1 year ago
@EmeraldWarrior420 I never implied that, Of course it was a hit in the US :S
st1ka 1 year ago
@st1ka
No it wasn't, from what I've heard. It wasn't nearly as favored as the Famicom.
TheEscapedBalloon 1 year ago
@TheEscapedBalloon Well, the Famicom came some time AFTER. I believe you have this confused with the 7800.

@radiorob1 Well if so, then why did the "Japanese" waste their time creating such system and didn't brought
a Commodore 64 instead ? it came in 1982 and the capabilities are almost identical.
janmansde3dede 7 months ago
why the hell is it called atari 2800 its not more powerful then the 2600 infact its the same system.
