  • What happened at 6:48? Poor trumpet. Haha (:

  • greater dallas youth orchestra played this a bit faster

  • OH NO.

  • i love this it reminds me of a disney classic

  • i played this with the west glam youth orchestra for the first time and we sight read it and did a better job that this even tho this was an allright version it needed to go alot faster and you need better trumpets who didnt miss pitch the notes as much the horns are weirdd aswell lol (:

  • LOL. It's a youth orchestra. You know they grabbed whatever horn-like thing was available.

  • too slow!

  • Those percusive horns sounded like dying geese! Otherwise good performance!

  • where did you get the car horns to do this?

  • magic.

  • Is this the Tacoma Youth symphony from Washington state? Excellent group of kids. Only thing, the horns sound funny.

  • Ya WA St. Tacoma. Haha i didn't chose the car horns. But whatever.

  • it might be a mute

  • The car horn ruins the song.

  • ime gonna try out for this group i cant wait!

  • yay- go american in paris!!! lol

I'm playing this is my orchesra (chichester youth chamber) it's great fun

  • im playing this in my orchestra at the mo... we cant play this well yet... but we go loads faster. YAAAY SECOND VIOLIN!

  • this is one hell of a beastly song

  • I recently played this in an orchestra, and being a trombone, thoroughly enjoyed the piece. It was enjoyable to play a Gershwin piece that was written so well. The only thing about this performance, was stated before - the tempo is too slow for the piece. But otherwise very well played. Go trombones!

  • i played this as the only alto sax in the band its fun when you actually get to play after being tacet for 7 min

  • This rendition of it didn't, obviously. Just listen to it played professionally.

  • I'm playing this for my high school spring concert. 1st violin ooh yeah!

Great vid, sound is delayed like half a beat

  • It sounds syncopated.

  • Lovely xylophone work

  • The tempo is really slow. When you have a famous piece that many people have heard before, they'll know when it's slow - like me.

  • i know a bit faster but not much... could you please send me the most quick version? Tyvm

  • :)) i like the trompets:)) they sound like sum toys XD

  • Hehe, I'm in the Tualatin Valley Community Band, and we're practicing this piece. I could never devote the time to be in a youth philharmonic, my school schedule is incredibly rigorous. Flutes rock!

  • ugh gershwin lol, we had to play porgy and bess 10 times this past summer when we toured europe (long island youth orchestra), i think we have some videos on here of our orchestra, anyway this sounds pretty good

  • ooh, wrong note hit at 8:53ish,

    i think it's a viola

  • I liked this :)

So I couldn't help noticing some people were making biased opinions of whether Tacoma or Seattle was better.

What do you think about the Portland Youth Philharmonic?

  • never heard it :\

  • Oh really? Well, that's ok. I lived in Portland for a year and did PYP.

I know our orchestra was good, but since I saw this vid (and Tacoma isn't too far from Portland), I was just curious if you had any opinions of us.

Once again, nice work all you guys and girls in the orchestra :)

  • we're playing this for our 2007 Japan tour for California Youth Symphony,

i just hope we hit all the notes correctly (:

    i love this piece.

    viola players unite (:

  • iam playing this song on concert band =))))

  • simply extraordinary, congratulations, Gershwin always will be but the great one. I am happy for having found this. thanks

  • this is a little steep of a peice for a youth group.mabe somthing a little easyer.

the soli. plaers were good.just a few little tweaks would make them soud perfect.

  • hehe i'm playing it in my high school orchestra, where we have NINTH graders :D we'll nail it i'm sure

  • its world renowned. Im in the younger one. Its really cool. We play challenging pieces and we master them for concerts in a short period of time.

  • Let me ask t33ngrrrlsqu4d somthing, has SYS ever played at Carnegie? We have.

  • haha, yea i was watching this concert live. Well there are some kids in the orchestra that are from other countries. It was the TYS sister cities concert.

  • This is a very good performance; Gershwin is not easy, and especially not with such little rehearsal time. I applaud you greatly for a job well done! I only wish we would play Gershwin! BTW, there are only a few vids of my orchestra on YouTube, the main one being the world premiere concert of my composition Celebration Overture. Check it out and let me know what you think! Great job again!

  • Thanks man. I dont want to generalize, but ive heard that the kids in the Seattle Youth Symphony are very cut throat. And ide love to hear your group perform. Post a vid. Tacoma Youth Symphony is heading to China for a 4 concert tour next summer, that will be fun.

  • Yeah, what good is it being in an orchestra if the cut-throat environment and overly competitive nature weighs more than the skill of the performers? Competition scares me! :) Yeah, be sure to keep posting vids, especially of the tour (if those get recorded)! BTW, search for "Chris Lowry Celebration Overture" if you want to see CYS play my own piece. There are a few other vids of us too, I think, just in case you want to check it out.

BTW, what instrument do you play?

  • And, even though we play slightly edited music (that is to say, the real music but with only the first three first violin stands playing high octave stuff -- which is a very good idea!) and play in a sucky concert hall, we are very good. But, that doesn't make us better or worse than anyone else; we're good but we can't compare with Boston or Chicago.

  • I have to say I think all the fighting over who's better is stupid. Location, programming, and performance venues mean nothing in comparison to the talent of the students. I could make a statement that my orchestra (the Curb [Nashville] Youth Symphony) is better because we are based in Nashville TN, which afterall is Music City USA.

  • I'm not part of any youth orchestra yet, but my mozart! Does it really matter whose better? I think you guys make your orchestras look bad fighitng like this. anyways, I've noticed that most of the youth orchestras are playing gershwin this year [pacific youth, you guys, and the chicago youth orch--saw the poster while my ens was doing a clinic with mr. gene pokorny, the tubist of the chicago symphony]. especially gershwin.

  • im not going to just sit and take his insults like im some sort of absorbant spounge. Sorry if i have a passion for life. And some pride as to not just be a doll that gets beaten around.

  • I understand what you're saying, the same thing is going on between my ensemble and another ensemble actually. I know, music is my passion for life too. I didn't really analyze the comments but, if the other orchestra were to be criticizing you with constructive criticism, thats when you should graciously take it as opposed to them trashing your orchestra--if they are trashing your orchestra, then I pretty much can understand. sorry if I misunderstood :/

  • its ok. it was more of a trash talking, calling us horrible. i think the whole things stupid, i have nothing against the seattle youth symphony.

  • Ahh. As musicians they are representing themselves as idiots that way =) just remember that =].

  • again, i would rather pay big bucks to see seattle youth play based on how well they conduct themselves and how more talented they are.you can say im biased all you want, but the fact is you need to get out and understand that you guys can't compete with an elite program such as seattle youth.

i would post the website URLs but it wont fucking let me for some reason so go search both websites yourself ahahahahahahaha.

  • haha. again, u prove urself to be an idiot. Of course Seattle Youth Symphony will be "more classy" because its location is more classy then Tacoma. But this has nothing to do with talent. Tacoma Youth Symphony has attracted NUMEROUS students who have gone on to be professionals. Ok, so please just shut your mouth because you are making a bad reputation for the Seattle Youth Symphony, which is probably a respectable association.

  • who are you? why are you so obsessed with whos better than who. we arent telling you that tys is better than syso. we are just telling you to shut the fuck up.

  • btw that post was for tronduh/teengrl

  • if any decision as to who is better was to be made then we would have to use a different (better) recording because of how distorted this one is.

  • really all i need to do is post both the seattle youth and tacoma youth symphony websites and you could tell who is better just by looking at them. seriously how is tacoma youth suppose to attract students with this crap, sure you can say websites don't mean anything but this in itself is a reflection of the program and how you advertise yourself to prospective students or people who are trying to go to musical concerts.

  • ahahaha those kids look like scared bitches on that stage. horrible stage as well, you couldnt pay me to play on that.

  • they wouldn't pay you anyways

  • you obviously don't know what youre talking about sure you guys mightve played at carnegie but who really cares. syso has better musicians, better musical instructors, its classier and more professional, better musicians. and oh yea better and more talented musicians. enough said.

  • lol. u say that. but u have nothing to back that up on. except your own biased opinion. come back with any sorta info or backing at all to your statements..and then ill consider not thinking that your a complete moron that knows nothing except his own massive ego.

  • wow, don't act like you guys are better than seattle youth. you guys will always be number two to them. ive heard the top 4 youth symphonies in the nation crap so much dont give me that bs. what it comes down to is the profesionalism and talent of the programs. the fact is people will pay big dollars to watch seattle youth at benaroya any night than tacoma youth on hilltop or wherever the crap you guys play at.

  • once again i come across the problem of you having nothing to back this on except your own biased opinion. Please back this with real stats please if your going to make such rediculous claims, and put away teh fact the the classier of seattle will see SYS because of the CONVIENIANCE of the location, not the quality of the performance. And just because your home stage is Benaroya means nothing, and TYS plays in the Rialto Theatre on 9th in Tacoma.

  • you're stupid

  • horrible

  • anything to base that off of? Please keep in mind this is professional music being played by highschoolers after 3 days of rehearsing the music.

  • you call this professional? i played in the seattle youth symphony in benaroya now thats professional. seattle youth will own tacoma youth any day.

  • Actually thats wrong. Tacoma Youth Symphony played in Carnegee Hall, and was rated as in the Top 4 youth symphonies in the nation, along with New York, Boston, and Austin. Carnegee>Benaroya. And of course the SEATTLE youth symphony will play in the benroya....

  • Plus. The music that is being played, is the same music played by professionals, but being played by highschoolers after 3 days of rehearsing. You obviously dont know what you are talking about, kid.

  • Great job guys!!!

check out the Chapman Symphony Orchestra playing Dvorak 8th.

Chapman University is a private 4 year university in Orange County, CA

The Chapman School of Music has on its faculty many of the top players from the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Pacific Symphony.

  • That was sweet shiz!

  • Very nice performance. You all sounded great! I've been searching for Georger Gershwin's "An American in Paris", and you all have it on youtube. Thanks for posting.
