I have only appreciated him more since the solo stuff. SYL was always decent, but by far his solo stuff appeals to me more. Devin is with out a doubt among the biggest influences of my life.
It's rare for musicians to take a look in the mirror and see themselves past the pride and honour that people so commonly shield themselves from the world. Devin is indeed not just an interesting musician, he is a very cool dude!!
Strapping young lad was awesome for the same reason that Brendan Small is a genius with Dethklok. I saw DK live, and they are old, bald guys blasting away, laughing at themselves and us. Spinal Tap for those too serious about how "dark and evil" their music is. I work in a prison, and see REAL evil every day. The parody of death metal is hilarious. Music is supposed to be fun. Devin can do anything, including laugh at himself.
Very interesting. Good on Devin for being honest with himself and his fans. Too many musicians simply do what they're told or what ever sells records. I'm not a SYL fan but Devin's a really cool dude.
i can really relate to the music he does, alot of my riffs sounds similar to his style of music´, mostly in the later albums in his carreer, not with SYL.
while i respect devin townsend musically it's hard to believe that at the time this was recorded he was 37! fuck he hasn't aged well, probably from all the weed and alcohol.
Pretty awesome to hear HIM tell whats going on with him and the intentions he has with his music. I personally liked all of what ive listened so far being his solo, the band, syl and the project itself. Im going crazy with anticipation for the new records Deconstruction and Ghost.
This interview demonstrates why I love Devin and respect him. It's not just his musical ability, but his honesty and courage to do what he feels is right for him. He could easily have kept the SYL engine running and made more money since it was popular, but he had the courage to say no and be content making far less money doing music that resonates more with him. Very different from bands who are in it to milk the cash cow, or care more about being hardcore than having anything sincere to say.
I just bought three of his albums, Ki, Addicted and an earlier one, Accelerated Evolution. I'm waiting for his next album in March I think. Devin is way to underrated, if you tour, bring your ass to Pennsylvania!
The things that turned him on when he was 23 don't turn him on @37. Seems normal. A guy like this has a lot going on, there's a lot of music in his head that he feels the need to get out there. Very honest with himself.
i saw strapping during his period of negative whatever he was referring to but i think I, like alot of fans, really care about his musical talent, regardless of his emotional expressional through the songs, im with him either way, this dude fucking rocks
Townsend said in and interview about his next "heavy" album deconstruction:
"it will surprise quite a few folks that expect my current vision of 'heavy' to be like me in my mid-20s or early 30s. 'Deconstruction' sounds like someone's angry dad."
Does that mean non Strapping style shit?
Very cool guy. I don't care for 90% of his solo output but he is special to me for SYL, hence me looking forward to the return "to heavy" on deconstruction.
when i FIRST learned of Devin back when i was little, i thought he was a mentally unstable teenager that wrote really epic music and was totally awesome. then when i learned he was a layed back chill dude my mind was blown. now i understand how he feels about the differences between him and his music. im pretty much the same way, too. its either old school death metal or melodic pwoer metal.
i wanna be bald and wear glasses now. thanks to this fucker im obsessed with baritone flying V's, so much im not spending a penny until his sig is released, we love you devy!
ive always been one of those rare ppl that prefered devins solo stuff as appose to syl, some of syl's songs really did effect me in a really great way
It's Fantastic to see him talking about his time in The Wildhearts, one of my all time favourite bands. There's vids of Devin play live with them on youtiube, search for 'The Wildhearts Reading Festival' :)
I've listened to Devin throughout the ages and I think I've heard what he's trying to say. The revelations he had when his Century Media contract was up were fairly synchronized with my own at the time. The Ocean Machine: Biomech stuff, Devlab and Hummer are seriously worth a listen if you're unfamiliar with Dev as an artist.
Wasn't crazy about Addicted and I thought Anneke bastardised most of the album but I'm sure Decon will be a lot better.
@BluesMaddy Yeah, a female vocalist was undoubtedly a good move but I hate her voice. Anyone else would've been preferable. The girl on Ki who sings at the end of Trainfire is incredibly talented, has a beautiful voice and I think she contributes hugely.
I'm loving the new closed captioning google transcribe captions. When he says "So I started Strapping Young Lad" was "when I started studying loud" on the CC
Its great how open Devin is about how he feels. I love his work & he seems like a cool guy as well. What he is saying here reminds me of what Maynard James Keenan from Tool must have come up against dealing with the "persona" of Tool. Just a random thought.
And he's freakin hot now! Seriously, the shaved head fits him very well! Not gonna talk about looks though. I only have "Terria" and I think that's pretty decent album. Any advice on which other Devin album to check out? Any experts?
But if you find your entrance to his style (where he sometimes hardly has any, positively) you should ( and will I am certain) buy all of his albums (DTB to SYL!)
Thanx, I know I've listened to one track from "Ocean Machine". The one is "Things Beyond Things" and I I'll you, if the whole album is like that song it seems very promising!
Infinity is a rather interesting record that goes on a very intense journey musically, lyrically. Check that one out. The solo stuff does paint a nice picture about his life in my opinion.
