  • so proud he comes from the same streets i do

  • 9:24, what he just said there was brilliance.

I have only appreciated him more since the solo stuff. SYL was always decent, but by far his solo stuff appeals to me more. Devin is with out a doubt among the biggest influences of my life.

  • It's rare for musicians to take a look in the mirror and see themselves past the pride and honour that people so commonly shield themselves from the world. Devin is indeed not just an interesting musician, he is a very cool dude!!

  • Strapping young lad was awesome for the same reason that Brendan Small is a genius with Dethklok. I saw DK live, and they are old, bald guys blasting away, laughing at themselves and us. Spinal Tap for those too serious about how "dark and evil" their music is. I work in a prison, and see REAL evil every day. The parody of death metal is hilarious. Music is supposed to be fun. Devin can do anything, including laugh at himself.

  • Very interesting. Good on Devin for being honest with himself and his fans. Too many musicians simply do what they're told or what ever sells records. I'm not a SYL fan but Devin's a really cool dude.

  • WHO THE FUCK DISLIKED THIS ?!?

  • glad this guy gets so much respect now. seems very honest and down to earth

  • i think devins head looks like a ballbag with glasses....

  • He is wearing the same things in all videos :)

  • @blgengin yeah he owns maybe 4 outfits

  • It feels good to know that God is an awesome Canadian and not a vindictive douche in the sky.

  • Ahhhh I can't wait for his new album :D

  • i can really relate to the music he does, alot of my riffs sounds similar to his style of music´, mostly in the later albums in his carreer, not with SYL.

  • :Talking to Morrow (Tomorrow)

  • I can relate to Devin on so many levels.

  • Wow hes so amazing

  • I kinda miss the skullet.

  • while i respect devin townsend musically it's hard to believe that at the time this was recorded he was 37! fuck he hasn't aged well, probably from all the weed and alcohol.

  • @fyuuor he aged better then one of my buddies.... he's 22 balding with grey hair it's fuckin crazy

  • @SuperJosephVincent My brother is 29 and is almost bald, ain't male pattern baldness a bitch?

  • @fyuuor what are you talking about.

  • So weird seeing him without the skullet

  • All that from just one question. Sweet!

  • Pretty awesome to hear HIM tell whats going on with him and the intentions he has with his music. I personally liked all of what ive listened so far being his solo, the band, syl and the project itself. Im going crazy with anticipation for the new records Deconstruction and Ghost.

  • Ziltoid was so insperational i made THE OFFICIAL ZILTOID CALL OF DUTY BLACK OPS PLAYERCARD!!!! add me on ps3 brutal_fate check it out!

    \m/ Heavy Fucking Devy \m/

  • @cody2298 You, sir, should suck my balls.

  • Hence the diveristy he brings to all of his albums, you will never go bored with Devin Townsend

  • absolutely amazing

  • What a really nice, honest interview :)

  • really good interview :)

  • There is no other musician that has ever inspired me as much as Devin Townsend.

  • Devo!!! My hero :-))

  • Devin will never die

  • This interview demonstrates why I love Devin and respect him. It's not just his musical ability, but his honesty and courage to do what he feels is right for him. He could easily have kept the SYL engine running and made more money since it was popular, but he had the courage to say no and be content making far less money doing music that resonates more with him. Very different from bands who are in it to milk the cash cow, or care more about being hardcore than having anything sincere to say.

  • I love you Dev! I hope you'll continue to make great music forever!

  • I recognise so much, personally, in this story. How great it is that this guy is doing what he wants, and can live a good, honest life because of it!

  • Accidentally hit the dislike button...fuck.

  • @Ne1s0n64

you can hit like and it will change.... do it, do it :D

  • I just bought three of his albums, Ki, Addicted and an earlier one, Accelerated Evolution. I'm waiting for his next album in March I think. Devin is way to underrated, if you tour, bring your ass to Pennsylvania!

  • ¿what is the name of the song in the begin?

  • @pablox875 A Monday, from Ki.

  • The things that turned him on when he was 23 don't turn him on @37. Seems normal. A guy like this has a lot going on, there's a lot of music in his head that he feels the need to get out there. Very honest with himself.

  • i saw strapping during his period of negative whatever he was referring to but i think I, like alot of fans, really care about his musical talent, regardless of his emotional expressional through the songs, im with him either way, this dude fucking rocks

  • HA!!! I smoked with him during that period when he "quit smoking weed". it was awesome.

  • Townsend said in and interview about his next "heavy" album deconstruction:

"it will surprise quite a few folks that expect my current vision of 'heavy' to be like me in my mid-20s or early 30s. 'Deconstruction' sounds like someone's angry dad."

Does that mean non Strapping style shit?

Very cool guy. I don't care for 90% of his solo output but he is special to me for SYL, hence me looking forward to the return "to heavy" on deconstruction.

  • god hes a fucking genious, just able to emotionally connect to his music...something you hardly see at all in modern music Devin is awsome XD

  • when i FIRST learned of Devin back when i was little, i thought he was a mentally unstable teenager that wrote really epic music and was totally awesome. then when i learned he was a layed back chill dude my mind was blown. now i understand how he feels about the differences between him and his music. im pretty much the same way, too. its either old school death metal or melodic pwoer metal.

  • Great interview.

  • The Yoda Of Music :)

  • @ItsZebraMan music and crazyness I will make,yes!

  • i wanna be bald and wear glasses now. thanks to this fucker im obsessed with baritone flying V's, so much im not spending a penny until his sig is released, we love you devy!

  • devin townsend: muscian,psychologist,unfuckingbeleivable dude,AWEOSOME AS FUCK

  • devin townsend was in wildhearts?!? =0

  • "and then I ended up on a couch, with a san pelegrino, talking to morow" that was hilarious lol

  • ive always been one of those rare ppl that prefered devins solo stuff as appose to syl, some of syl's songs really did effect me in a really great way

  • @MrShishkebab

I absolutely agree with you. Everything else just sounds so much more uniquely himself.

I know its the whole Jekyll & Hyde that is Devin debate, but DTB just seems to take a step behind and let everything 'breathe'.

  • I can so see why he left syl now.

  • i just keep getting surprised over and over with this guy.

  • holy shit he's bald !!!!

  • It's Fantastic to see him talking about his time in The Wildhearts, one of my all time favourite bands. There's vids of Devin play live with them on youtiube, search for 'The Wildhearts Reading Festival' :)

  • he doesn't look as fierce without his skullet XD

  • iLove HevyDevy!

  • did he say "tour with Opeth"? :O

  • Devinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn thank you for giving us such great music over the years.

  • I'll listen to anything this guy creates, period.

  • i try to see "new" devin but i only see the screaming devin :/

  • @demigod325 he does, use ze wikipedia.

  • Dev always will be my musical hero. So glad I get to see him live after all.

  • His eloquence is impressive, to say the least.

  • @demigod325

lol, not so much, any more =P

  • He looks almost EXACTLY like he did in 1993....

  • I loved his latest album with the girl. i thought it was his best.

  • I've listened to Devin throughout the ages and I think I've heard what he's trying to say. The revelations he had when his Century Media contract was up were fairly synchronized with my own at the time. The Ocean Machine: Biomech stuff, Devlab and Hummer are seriously worth a listen if you're unfamiliar with Dev as an artist.

Wasn't crazy about Addicted and I thought Anneke bastardised most of the album but I'm sure Decon will be a lot better.

  • @TehBuhmDiggeee Really? I thought she had a really beautiful voice, and that her vocals really helped contrast Devin's angry vocals.

  • @BluesMaddy Yeah, a female vocalist was undoubtedly a good move but I hate her voice. Anyone else would've been preferable. The girl on Ki who sings at the end of Trainfire is incredibly talented, has a beautiful voice and I think she contributes hugely.

  • @TehBuhmDiggeee The Ki singer - Che Aimee Dorval. She's on Facebook. Fabulous voice, sings on various tracks on that album, not just Trainfire.

  • looking foward for his next album, addicted was amazing.

  • All of his albums are beautiful and unique. He has got to be one of the greatest musicians of his generation.

  • lol I saw him at that Opeth tour, he was high as shit. He was good but seemed a bit on edge, makes sense now.

  • Awesome. Interesting interview. Time for Part 2. Hail Devin Townsend.

  • Damn, this can't be Devin Townsend! xD He's so calm, not the screaming, pissed of mother fucker on, for example, Shitstorm xP groovy

  • @ProtoType989 Consider it outlet for his anger. I'd say it worked pretty good. =D

  • I'm loving the new closed captioning google transcribe captions. When he says "So I started Strapping Young Lad" was "when I started studying loud" on the CC

  • There you go folks, a musician tells his history, shows his evolution in 10 minutes. Excellent. Way to go Devin.

  • hi all, i'm not too evolved into DT (hope soon i will :D), so i cannot recognize which song is it, that on beginning ?

  • "what I ended up becoming popular for... was being an asshole... and so I got very good at it!" Lol :D

  • 3:42 LOVE IT!

  • I want to get some of his latest albums

  • 6:10

    I didn't forget, Devin.

  • Hell no, I didn't forget either, Devin.

  • Its great how open Devin is about how he feels. I love his work & he seems like a cool guy as well. What he is saying here reminds me of what Maynard James Keenan from Tool must have come up against dealing with the "persona" of Tool. Just a random thought.

  • Pellegrino

  • is he drinking a beer there?? i thought he was sober now?

  • @4thbeast I know he drinks near beers

  • @4thbeast no he is drinking mineral water called san pellegrino

  • From restaurant to Steve Vai's band. Unbelievable:]

  • I love this man.

  • he cut his hair

  • And he's freakin hot now! Seriously, the shaved head fits him very well! Not gonna talk about looks though. I only have "Terria" and I think that's pretty decent album. Any advice on which other Devin album to check out? Any experts?

  • yeah, Alien and Ziltoid the Omniscient

  • I recommend "Ocean Machine!"

But if you find your entrance to his style (where he sometimes hardly has any, positively) you should ( and will I am certain) buy all of his albums (DTB to SYL!)

  • Thanx, I know I've listened to one track from "Ocean Machine". The one is "Things Beyond Things" and I I'll you, if the whole album is like that song it seems very promising!

  • Terria is quite an exceptional album. Its his 2nd best after Biomech (Ocean Machine).

  • @Floskeknosk

    OCEAN MACHINE

this one is great for working out

just as much as a real chill rainy day

this is my favorite record out of all the

records that have inhanced my life.

  • I personally like Synchestra. Check that album out.

Also, check out his "The Devin Townsend Project" albums, Ki and Addicted.

  • @Floskeknosk

Infinity is a rather interesting record that goes on a very intense journey musically, lyrically. Check that one out. The solo stuff does paint a nice picture about his life in my opinion.

  • @Floskeknosk You must, I really mean must, get Addicted..

Basically, if you really get into him, your in trouble, coz he has over 20 albums that he has done..

  • he always gives the longest answers hahaha. love dev

  • sometimes its hard to believe that this guy (points to guy in video) is the same guy that fronted SYL

    dont get me wrong

    I fucking love Devy

    just kinda mind blowing sometimes

    haha

  • On drugs he rocks, Sober he rock in a totally different way.

  • brilliant.

  • so much respect for this guy

  • it's strange to me how he is aware of all his life and past, everything he did. he seems so humble and honest that i'd go mad

  • Brilliant. Dev rules.

  • He really is an honest guy and very expressive musically

  • "thank you sir...its good to know that we have at least one true music fan in here"

  • Is that the TV in the background?

If Devin "Motherfucking" Townsend is in your house, you *do not* put the TV on. Hell, you sit at his feet, cross-legged and silent.

  • lol.

  • It's just a 'Pellegrino', mineral water.

  • Give the man a prize!! Definately water. He;s sober now and still is a GOD! Devin Rules!

  • This is probably the best explanation of his career ever, and why he wants to do what he wants to do.

  • wats the intro song?

  • "A Monday". It's the opening track to the album "Ki" by the Devin Townsend Project.

  • I hope he doesnt worry about losing fans, cuz, I mean... Well myself I've listened to SYL the most, but what I'm out for is his talent, and whatever feeling he tries to express, I'm convinced that he will do great!

  • @thrasher90 Like a lot of truly gifted musicians, he doesnt see himself that way ( i think).. So no he wont lose us, but he might think so anyway..

  • I have tix for the 2010 sydney, Australia show.....can't wait!! what a sincere, honest interview. I love the heavy ass strapping stuff but i also love the other end of the spectrum..a true allrounder...Dev you rule!!

  • I love how he turned down a scholarship. I don't know about his, but my parents would flip shit.

Keep doing what YOU want, Devin! :D

  • Wow Devin is a true musician. Lots of respect for him!

  • Devin owns! \m/

  • THE master

  • Great guy.....I hope to jam with someday!

  • great interview!!!!! thank you for upload!!!

  • Lol I thought strapping was about being a sensitive asshole.

    Live long Devin.

  • This puts so much into perspective.

  • I Always Wonder how a Such Calm Guy like DT make music so extreme like SYL, REAL TALENT

  • @emperor262626 - Perhaps it's because he exorcises his demons through his music. Perhaps if he didn't have music to release through, he might have taken a different path?

  • @emperor262626

Calm? Not naturally. You know he takes meds for bipolar disorder right? xD

  • @emperor262626 bipolar, and btw, im calmed too, and i write thrash and death, if you feel it, doesnt matter how you ate.

  • love devin <3

  • I can respect him for always doing what his heart told him.
