The remake is not happening Gossling is too busy is was to be his debut as a director & while Ray Sharkey may have been a great actor he was a horrible human being, he knowingly had unprotected sex w/ women after he found out he had A.i.D.S. , he in his macho Ny Italian way believed that the A.I.D.S. he had would not harm him or anyone ,but he was wrong & did infect innocent people w/a deadly virus that @the time of Shrkey's Death in 1993 was still a death sentence. Great actor/ awful person
I remember seeing this when it first came out and I was just in my teens and even then I thought "Tommy" was SO much hotter than "Chaz." This guy just oozes pure sex....
actually, quite a few if you are incorrect. This movie did come out in 1980, and Ray Sharkey did die in 1993, but it wasnt due to aids or drug use...he contracted aids through a blood transfusion. RIP Ray
Ray had he lived, would had been a De Niro or a Pacino. Sadly drugs among many other things, killed him. RIP Ray. BTW, for the record he passed away in 1980.
I haven't seen ANY proof that Paul Land(Colandrillo) has died. Some girl, calling herself Maria Colandillo, on the IMDB board, claims to be Paul's daughter.. and in 2 separate posts, she claims he passed on Dec 30th 2007, and then on another post claims a date of Dec 31st 2007. If she is his supposed daught, you would think she would get her dates correct! I'd like to see some other documentation before actually accepting this 'Maria' fragmented posts.
I can tell you I used to watch this movie on the ship at sea when we got it. If anyone chose to take a cassette copy or vinyl and decided to make digital cds, they would not get in any trouble since the copyright on this is long gone. Do you know how many fans of this movie is out there and would love a copy of the whole soundtrack?
I watched this movie when I was 12 years old and fell in love with it.. The music is awesome and Ray Sharky was one of americas great actors.. Paul Land was a played an awesome Tommy Dee. I just ordered the soundtrack on LP with a cd transfer and I'm sitting here waiting for it so I can take it to the beach with me.. I'm sure it will drive my older brother crazy.... LMBO
@rezindian06 Well I am sure there are less complicated ways than my method but here goes. I use the download helper on Firefox to save the .flv file. I then use a converter to change to an .avi file. THEN I use Switch sound file converter to rip the audio from the video. Hope this helps.
Damn shame that Ray Sharky passed away in 1998 from aids, he was a great but under rated actor. The Idolmaker awesome flick, I love watching it on dvd every sunday afternoon
This is the scene where you really see how the idolmaker is the man behind the "star", when you see him back there doing the same dance moves, almost like he's controlling a puppet onstage.
Hi. The brunette is not Cherie Felice. I know this because I am Cherie Felice. I also am in the film, but I am in the American Bandstand scene with Tommy Dee.
The brunette's name is Cherie Felice I believe. Not sure who the blonde is though. This flick brought back so many memories. One of my all time faves.
@mrzchozenone Hi. i just wanted to let you know that the brunette was not Cherie Felice. I know this because I am Cherie Felice. I am in the movie but I am in the American Bandstand scene with Paul. I had so much fun filming this movie. I was only fifteen years old.
I thought he was so sexy in this film and I favoured him over Peter. Paul just exudes sexuality. It's his hip movement and the way he uses his eyebrows. Also, even though he's in character, his confidence is very attractive.
Ray Sharkey if I'm not mistaken was nominated for various awards for this role. The songs in this movie I felt were good enough to make it on the charts. It's a shame Ray Sharkey left us too soon...
One of my favorite movies ever. Loved it, and thought Paul Land was sooooooooo sexy and handsome! Peter Gallagher was great too, but Tommy Dee had that bad-boy attraction. I've had the DVD for awhile, got to watch it again. Also still have the LP record I bought so many years ago now. There's a brochure with the DVD that provides some interesting comments...to capture the authenticity of the cast's performances, scenes were filmed in actual bars, concert halls, and school gyms.
It's funny, I saw this movie years back and absolutely fell in love with it. Ray Sharkey gave a brilliant performance, so much so I can still feel everything that actor put across all these many years later. It's funny this film stayed with me in my subconcious for over twenty years and is still fresh to me when I watch these clips. I only wish I owned a copy of this on DVD, I really would love to watch it all the way through again. Kudos to the entire production. is a timeless and great film.
I remember when i saw this movie, it made me feel like i could be someone, i just needed someone to believe in me, later i became a male dancer in Iowa, and i did that song, I felt so great. I got to feel what he felt when people were calling out my name. I will always remember that feeling.
I finally found the whole thing: Paul Land is the actor that plays Tommy Dee, Jesse Fredericks is the actual singer, and Jeff Barry is the writer of all the film songs
Ray Sharkey did die from AIDS which is no shame whether a person is gay or straight, but before he did and knowing he had advanced AIDS he slept with many women and condemned an unknown number of them to a lingering, painful and premature death. His talent as an actor can't be denied but as a human being he was cold unfeeling and a complete failure
He was from North Bergen, NJ and he didn't sing. I use the past tense because he recently passed away. He used to be good friends with a cousin of mine and I actually met him. The guy had alot of style. It's too bad he didn't do more acting work.
Lip syncing here like Milli Vanilli (even some record skipping) and not even trying to hide it! LOL! Vocals for 'Baby' and 'However Dark the Night' are actually Peter Gallagher (Caesare) -- what a brilliant voice; however, Paul Land (Tommy Dee) doesn't actually sing. Vocals for 'Here is My Love' and 'Sweet Little Lover' are by Jesse Frederick, who composed and recorded both songs in 1971. Jesse Frederick is a TV composer (Perfect Strangers, Full House, Family Matters, Step By Step).
Saw this great movie in the theaters in 1980, Ray Sharkey RIP, won a golden globe for best actor, and he is fabulous! Jessie Frederick actually sang the Tommy D's songs, he later sang the theme song to Full House.
Ray Sharkey died in 1993 of AIDS, but Paul Land, who played Tommy Dee, is alive. He currently runs a construction business in New Jersey under his real name Paul Calandrillo.

This is the pride AND bane of producers, since the beginning-
..injecting their essence into acts that can only emulate the original. My creative philosophy is based on this ism.
I guess you fig it out-
I'm a producer!
