@TinaDVR Bruce was never a member of the Asbury Jukes, he donated songs to some of their albums and guest appeared at some of their concerts, but he was never at any time a member. Bruce, Stevie, and Johnny were in several bands together in the very early 70's like the Blackberry Booze Band and the Bruce Springsteen Band, but he was never a Juke. The Jukes only released their first album in 1976, three years after Springsteen's first solo album and a year into the Born to Run tour.
This is absolutely the same backing track as Springsteen's version. No sax, but lead guitar instead. Drums, bass, rhythm guitars, piano and organ are E Street band tracks. Fantastic vocal though. I love the Bruce & Miami Steve vocals though..
oh my god i must have watched this a million times it was my late brothers favourite record been to see southside loads of times with him, miss him so much! Love you bobby xxxxxxx
Early sixties "Soul" sound. Reminds me of the days when a group of neigborhood crooners would sing late at night at the corner. Man! What a song. What an album. One of my all time favorites. I like his follow up to this album also. I've got this and the follow up on vinyl. Can't find either one on CD
Springsteen thought Southside had one of the best deliveries and voices around. So just because you dont know who he is, proves you should not be listening to it. Go listen to Bon Jovi
Springsteen gave him the rights to this song to him, cause he thought Southside could sing it better. I love Springsteen and have seen him live 7 times, but Southside is equally amazing in concert
@grant4791 bruce didn't give them the song because he thought they could sing it better, he just did it because they're friends and because he had enough good songs and the asbury jukes aren't able to write a succesful song.
@matrixmortalk12 If you listen to Bruce's version, it's different, but no better or worse. I would say Johnny's is at a slightly slower tempo. However, both are done beautifully.
@grant4791 I am a giant Springsteen fan... and I have seen Southside twice.. in small venues ( of course) and he puts on a terrific show.. its amazing how many mediecre bands make it big.. and Johnny Lyon still is mostly unknown... a fucking shame... but I am sure that musicians that are in the know and love east coast jersey soul rock appreciate this man and his bands talent....
Most of the songs Springsteen wrote that other artists made popular were done better by him - "Fire," "Because the Night," and "Pink Cadillac" just don't work as well with anyone but The Boss.
But Southside owns this one. Just a haunting, beautiful performance.
My favorite song from one of the kick ass best albums ever recorded. I saw Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes at the Warfield in S.F. Waited all night for this song, but they didn't play it. They were great, though, and I still love them.
@1tabt hey this song reminds me of my girl friends @ Florida College in 1975..... she's now a grandmother..... Wow! Sonya hope your enjoying your life! You desirve it babe!!!!
This is as good of a song as any ever sung. Southside is cool and even cooler for not making it to the big big time - lucky for us who like real honest music!!!! Too much fame sometimes ruins the best.
My sister's turning 50 Tuesday so I'm making her a playlist of stuff from our youth that you don't hear all the time, from NJ and Philly. She's still in Jersey, I'm in Florida - I think it's so cool this came via the Netherlands (you know, Holland, where the Dutch live). Thanks Barry.
I like this song. This is one of the best sang by Southside Johnny. This is will be one of the songs I'll have played at my wedding reception when I get married.

@tsporr93 Steve VanZandt was a member of The Jukes before joining The ESB in 1975. But, you're right..Bruce never was.

He made the big time; in a way. Locally, at least, he has the credibility of Springsteen. And, Bruce wrote this for him.
I guess he just doesn't have Bruce's money.
But, who cares?
