I loved this movie, and I appreciate the art of Jean-Michele Basquiat, despite some of the hateful, racist comments I've read on various videos about him. What a tragedy that he died so young of a heroin overdose. Also, I think that Jeffrey Wright is one of the most under-rated actors out there, and one of my personal favorites.
Why put down the 9 year old who makes shapes.. These are the judgements that destroy art.. Have it approved by the experts.. The experts can never get beyond their own ego, spend your life defending it, that becomes your art, a waste. Draw something, it may last longer.
I think the degree to which we accept as art that which is not, is a commentary on the state of society, politics, and culture. We accept gangster rap as music, and the sexual perversion of Desperate Houeswives as primetime TV. We call diversity a virtue, though the evidence that it's not is in every headline. We, the west, are nations that have shat upon their culture. As you call Basquiat brilliant, be witness to the death of a society, the end of a people, where right be wrong, & bad be good

People: I have criticized art for some time. I have looked and looked, but have found no deep artistic talent among any works of Basquiat's. maybe you should take a chill pill, Schnabel and Basquiat were friends, he didn't hate him. Terrible interpretation of the life of a great artist. Hard to believe Julian Schnabel, who directed it was a close friend of Jean Michel. Jeffrey Wright doesn't sound, look or walk like Basquiat. What really buries this movie though is the fact that none of the paintings in the movie are Basquiat's. Gerard Basquiat, who controls the estate, wouldn't allow them to be reproduced for the film.

Heart and brain...yes....judging by your secular taste for realism i doubt you have the brain capacity to create a work of art that means something...realism is good...but any body that takes the time can do it...abstract art goes much deeper than technique.
His artwork is not very impressive. He is just not a genius. There were other artists who were able to make paintings that required incredible skill, far more talent, and just as much originality as his paintings, but because they weren't tackling big social issues, they weren't ever very famous. I swear to you, if he had made the same style of paintings, but without depicting tormented - looking black people, it wouldn't have been considered so great.
It matters because everyone calls him a genius, but I don't believe he really was. I think he was hyped up by Andy Warhol. I don't think he was addressing any issues that hadn't already been addressed many times by others. What was important about what he did? I want to learn why people think he's great. Do you know why? I'm open to learn. I want to know.

@ChanceEncounters I agree that this film about his life was too short. But, in the case of Basquiat, he only enjoyed fame for less than 10 years. So there wasn't much to portray - as far his life span as a successful artist.
@fnkdrmmr I loved the film, i thought his life was brought short too quickly. Would of been great to see how he would progressed as an artist, maybe like Yves Tanguy or Picasso his styles might of evolved or changed.

His artwork is not very impressive. He is just not a genius. There were other artists who were able to make paintings that required incredible skill, far more talent, and just as much originality as his paintings, but because they weren't tackling big social issues, they weren't ever very famous. I swear to you, if he had made the same style of paintings, but without depicting tormented - looking black people, it wouldn't have been considered so great.

It matters because everyone calls him a genius, but I don't believe he really was. I think he was hyped up by Andy Warhol. I don't think he was addressing any issues that hadn't already been addressed many times by others. What was important about what he did? I want to learn why people think he's great. Do you know why? I'm open to learn. I want to know.

@ChanceEncounters I agree that this film about his life was too short. But, in the case of Basquiat, he only enjoyed fame for less than 10 years. So there wasn't much to portray - as far his life span as a successful artist.
