on the aircompressor version does the aircompressor itself have a safety overpressure valve built in so you don't explode your pvc tank?or do you still need to install one? you mentioned tapping one in i'm unsure how that nossle won't shoot out of the hole.
Yep, there's a pressure valve on the air compressor itself. I set it to cut off about 10 psi below the safety rating on the PVC, so there's no explosion risk. Once the cannon is fully charged though, I have a cutoff valve on it, so I can unplug from the tank for better aiming.
This season I may build a heavy duty model from steel. We'll see if anything comes of that.
@somecallmejim which is diameter of the barrel 'cause i two cork rifles (you can see in my channel if you want) and i use a one and a half inch pvc pipe for launching golf ball and i want to know wich is the diameter of the barrel please respond
yes, that is verry cool what i do is i get a coffe filter fill it half way with BBs shove it down there and shoot some time i but a rubber band on top of it but be careful sometimes bbs go wild
I had the same problem. To actually get the eggs to stay intact I had to hard boil them, and then I put a single strip of duct tape around the middle just for good measure.
No mine is way better, ALL STEEL, NO FUCKIN PUSSY PVC! All the cannons you see on YouTube are fuckin PVC, COME ON! Mine will punch through a fuckin car with a blunt slug of cast aluminum! No cans, eggs, pumpkins, or usless crap go in my barrel, anything that is solid and that can inflict damage to metal! I will post it when I get ahold of a camera. Oh no offense somecallmejim, I encourage you to make a large steel cannon so large you have to tow it behind your car, I know my next on will be
The reason I built it from PVC was because it was cheap and easy, and I'm broke and lazy, thus making it a good match.
As i mentioned in reply to another commenter, I actually wanted to do steel, but I thought I'd start small. Maybe next summer if I'm in the mood I'll do something more industrial.
Shoot me a message if you get a video of your cannon up. I'd be interested to see it.
I ancourage you to go overboard with it, lol! I made mine in about 2 hours with what I could find for cheap or free, so mine probly costed around $40. Remember my name so you can see my cannon in action, I will try to get good picture with my dads cam, but it uses little tapes, so I do not knoe how the quality will come out on here.
I do, I will share my easy to build design with others so they can have fun as well, pvc is kinda dangerous if you do not do it right, there is no powder or accelerants used in my design, which makes it a lot safer for even the whole family. Just compressed air that is the way to go if you have no or limited knowledge of explosives and accelerants.
Acually I have stopped making negative critical post and trying to clean up my language, sorry if I affended anyone with my words. I realized I have a reputation to uphold, and even more so when I start posting vids of my projects, so no more of that for me guys, i'm puttin on my halo, hehe. I wish all well in your research and hobbies, even if you are competition in future patents.
Great suggestion. I'll probably do just that for the new episodes of "Crap Launcher" Coming this summer.
I wanted to use a solenoid valve on this one, but my super dinky small town hardware store that I bought all the stuff from didn't have one in their inventory, and I didn't want to drive around trying to find one. But now I have the time. :-)
"However, PVC has one major drawback. It is brittle. An inadvertent impact could cause the piping to shatter, endangering surrounding personnel. Most PVC pipe manufacturers warn against using PVC for compressed air service due to potential liability from such failures. "
I actually wanted to do an all-metal construction with steel pipe, but it would have been way too heavy for hauling round, and it's a lot pricier than PVC. In the future, I might build a larger steel rig, as I want to try launching some bigger stuff (full pop cans, produce, small children :-D )
I hate to be contrary, but the entire setup is PVC schedule 40, steel, and brass valves. The weakest parts of the setup are still rated well above the maximum PSI I could get out of my compressor. I specifically avoided both drainage waste vent and ABS piping. No worries here, I did my homework, but seriously, thanks for your concern! ;-)
It's all powered by air pressure. An air compressor (like the kind you'd use to fill a car tire or power a big nail gun) pumps air at about 120 psi into that big chamber on the bottom. up on that smaller chamber on top there's a valve that lats all of that air escape at about the same time. The result is a LOT of pressure that can send an egg (or whatever) a super long way. We were at least 200 yards out on most of those! :-)
I may have to do that on the next one. Unfortunately, this time around we had no technical errors caught on tape. Now if I'd been recording for the first hour I was out there...
Hmmm... It WOULD be fun to launch a nobel prize....wait...nevermind.
On the boss thing, It could be done, but I'd have to do a little upgrading. Steel pipe, probably 4 12" diameter chambers at 5' long each. An electronic actuator to pump all four air chambers into the launch chamber, and you're set.
But really, it would be much easier if you could just divide your boss up into 2" squares! :-D
That was pretty freakin' cool! Hmmm, what to shoot. You could put some anti-matter in it and shoot it as some matter. No wait, that might not be the best idea, LOL. You could get a great big white canvas and hang it up and shoot different colors of paint at it. You could get a giant bulletin board and some some sort of projectiles at it that would stick into it. A bunch at a time would be preferred. I guess a confetti cannon might be too cliche'.
Or you could affix a balloon *VERY* tightly over the end of it and when you fired it would instantly inflate and pop or inflate and go flying off if it happened to come unaffixed. You might have to experiment with different sized balloons to see what the most interesting effect turned out to be. OK, I'm done now:)
I considered building an anti-matter containment field into this model, but since I can't totally predict it's safety until my research project is finished at CERN, I decided to hold off until 2.0
Seeing as you're in Minnesota, you should find a quintessential Minnesotan thing to fire out of that thing... I'm thinking lutefisk, they aren't fit for human consumption, either!
It was more fun than you could imagine! Good idea there, too. I think maybe I should go to the state fair and see how many deep fried items on a stick I can launch!
It's the only way to serve 'em. Best of all, the launching process is so powerful you literally de-shell the egg mid-air, leaving you with a peeled, hard boiled, scrambled egg!
Wow where to begin on this one. Trust me I used to work in a landfill so I have seen many things that could be used as fodder. God I would have gotten into so much trouble if I had one of those. I would probably end up firing off whipped cream or mayo filled condoms. I say condoms because they are more flimsy with a lower tolerance than water balloons. And the whipped cream or mayo for that added effect. Yes I do have a rather sick sense of humor.
What came first? The cannon or the egg? Far as things to launch, where do I start!? Lets see. How about potatos? Or anything out of the garden. Or canned drinks? Or, mabey, just mabey a cannonball? LOL, just a few ideas. Man that looked like fun! Mabey I should build one.
LOL! Good ideas. And it WAS fun. TONS of fun! I will suggest that if you build one, you sit down and do the math to figure out how much pressure you need. Fortunately, my science genes kicked in, and it all worked out.
