I had the pleasure of meeting Leland Sklar when he was touring with Barefoot Servants. He is one of the nicest people I ever met in my life. I think that is one of the reasons he gets so many great gigs. He is an outstanding musician, of course. But who would want to spend a lot of time in the studio or on tour with a jerk? If I was a recording artist getting a band together Leland would be my first phone call.
I had the pleasure of meeting Leland Sklar when he was touring with Barefoot Servants in the mid '90s. What a NICE guy. That is probably why he gets so many great gigs. He has talent, of course. But who wants to record and/or tour with a jerk?
Great interview, great musician and what a sweetheart he is. But "backdrop" people, "backdrop!" Never do the interview in front of the bathroom signs? Oddly I have seen this before and it is getting to be a pet peeve. Have the wonderful subject standing in front of something slightly wonderful? This is history being filmed, here!
This man's body of work is unparalleled. He grew up in Southern California and went to CSUN right down the street from where I grew up. He is a studio god and and jam session master. Not to mention he seems like one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet, let alone jam with.
I liked his work on Billy Thorpe's Children of the Sun, both with the bass playing and the backing vocals. This man can sing like you wouldn't believe.
@quad1000 I'll tell you this quickly....the reason why I (a drummer) know about Lee is through his work with one of my heroes, Carlos Vega, during the whole James Taylor resurgence that happened in the mid eighties.
i think that this new technological era is harmful to next generation real musicians ... everybody is using technology to cover flaws... well its just an opinion...
I first started admiring this man's work when I got a hold of C&K's(Cecilio & Kapono) first two albums. Any fan or friend of Mr. Sklar needs to hear this if you haven't already. Probably some of his memorable stuff. Definitely!! Plays on "Elua" and their self-titled debut. Both albums were recorded in the early-to-mid 70's.
As a bass player myself, I have idolized this man's work for decades. One of the true "musical" bassist of all time. A truly remarkable tasteful musician.
This guy is a legend. I first saw him playing with Phil Collins years ago. I liked his playing so bad that I bet he should have done much more before. And, indeed, he played with James Taylor, among othes! After years I forgot about him, until I heard something very simple but effective, Era. And the bass line was amazing. Who was it? LS! At that point I was a huge Toto fan. Toto's Mike Porcaro injured his hand and, for my pleasure, LS was the substitute. Thank you, LS! Greetings from Brazil.
@BigBoiJC: yes and he was just so great with Carlos Vega. Carlos' story was so tragic, just heartbreaking. I'm sure everyone who worked with him was stunned beyond words.
@quad1000 Dad got me real interested in Lee because of Dad's friendship with Carlos....Lee (to me) is one of the bass players that (if you are able to) you would want to play with. and dang it man I miss Carlos...his touch and his proficiency are something that will never be repeated.
I have such respect for this guy. As a big Phil Collins fan, I saw him many times "live" on stage performing Collins' hits and he was awesome. 'Talked recently with Collins' guitarist Daryl Stuermer and he said Lee is a party animal and such a great human being.
Interviwed by a magazine, he admited not having seen in face shave since '69 !!!
The day he shave it, he will be stuck at Customs for not being the person pictured in his passport Lolllllllllllllllll
I love Lee's work with James Taylor. He can make a I-IV-V progression fresh and fascinating. His expression is beyond smooth and the way he sometimes plays behnd the note is just like butter. Awesome.
Not only is he over 60 but he's also completely savvy about all of todays Net Technology. Seriosuly he's very up to date on the Net. Goes along with time and not one of those Guys who complain about 'the old days' as it were.
Oh bless, love his comments about his age and still trying! Love you Lee, you don't even need to try, you play great live bass buddy. Thanks for posting MomoZone. Music is a drug, and live music is CAT A rating!
"I'll be your friend on Facebook". Yeah right! I just tried to friend him and it says he's reached the maximum number of friends!!! LOL

Lee Sklar has practically played with just about everybody in music. A signature bass for this man would be an honor. A very humble gentleman.
