I actually edited this commercial while working at the Foote, Cone & Belding ad agency back in 1985...it was the first thing I ever did that aired nationally, appearing on the Live Aid broadcast...
This is OTW,i think. He's on a 6'0" McCoy Lazor Zap, winged-keel single fin, with the sponsorship decals removed. The same board he lost the ASP title to Curren on.The consensus is that if he'd been on thrusters,he would have won an ASP title.
I remember this commercial too, in fact, i remember this making me want to learn how to surf because the wave and water looked so nice. I wish the scene was still like that.
0:18 ... how in the world did they get that shot?! AMAZING... and look, no CGI! laugh all you want, but the 70's and 80's definitely had its moments :-D
NO WAY! look-a surfer with a mind of his own...rode the boards he wanted to, surfed waves the way he wanted to,brought "fitness" onto the tour (along with Carrol),invented the "floater", and got second in the world 4 times! Free thinking and honest(maybe too much so) Cheyne never got the credit due...kinda sad.
The score cards didn't show Cheyne champ..but look at his record in 82 and how many victories he had and still didn't win and his last second counted in 79, but he was not sponsored right. Corrupt. Cheyne was the last creative force in surfing.
I just got off of 5th grade, waiting for 6th. That was when this came out. I LOVE IT!! I've loved it since it first aired!!

I edited this commercial and there was a cameraman actually in the water...if you look closely at the last shot you can see him.

No problem. I loved how they matched his board with the colors of the soda can(orange, blue and white).
