@luke2832 I started out a labor in a foundation hole in 1984 I labored for 3 years before i picked up a trowel . The masons worked your ass off back then for 5 dollars per hr. I loved doing the foundations but now i have been a mason for 25 yrs and here in Baltimore Md you dont see any Block Masonry foundations anymore its all poured concrete. I used to lay all my 12 inch block one handed i still do when i get to lay them but i perfer laying Brick now days. That guy can keep the 12 s
Dude was great i only seen one thing he did that was kind of bad. He didnt cross his end web next to the expansion rubber which if the cell has a Rod in it and needs to be poured grout will seap out and run down the wall . Everywere you have a rod the webs should be crossed so that you dont waste a lot of grout when pouring it will seap through the webs and get into cells that dont call for grout. But i have to give it to him he is nice with a trowel.

@SwaggernautKNIGHT My input is to take good care of your back because you only get one. I started on sites at 17. Bricklaying was a great job in Ireland back in 1999 but there is no construction jobs now. Ive been in Australia for last five years doing pipelaying. Most buildings are done with precast concrete slabs here. An excavating machine [digger] operator or a shuttering carpenter are 2 trades with a good future in australia anyway. Best of luck whatever you choose to do.

@SwaggernautKNIGHT yes i have input for you. simple. if you enjoy earning money by working with your muscle you can do it because you will enjoy it. very nice work real skillful.type in akkordant maurer and watch these videos of a guy working in switzerland laying block, theres five in all.hes useing a trowel called the berliner kelle.the ones of him laying to the line are very impressive.
i heard that this job wont be in demand anymore or later on for some reason like brick buildings wont be needed or something like that, is this true at all?
I've been laying block for 23 years, and I can't do that w/ 12" blocks either, also for those who say he's not fast, well he's definetley not slow either, he can work in my crew anytime he wants!
sure hes not fast or anything but he is very clean and the quality is defidently there. like I said earlier. hes laying 12 inch block with 1 hand. If this guy can go anywhere in the world and work
@eburshtan0720 yeah. i haven't see anybody buttered both blocks unless its the closure. its neat to see somebody doing that. im guilty myself of not doing it like this but im sure a lot of us are guilty of this. this is a rare work site practice.
These blocks are ideal, if you want to build fast and big, with these blocks you can really get on. But, are the holes inside the blocks not a bit dicey? I mean, when those holes get closed, airtight, won't the blocks break when frost is expanding the air trapped inside the block? How strong are these blocks compared to normal bricks? Are they hurricane proof? Here in Holland we don't have hurricanes, but we do mostly use bricks. I would love to build a garage of these things. Great job.
I got roped into helping my father in law with his foundation wall .10inch block , just repairing the wall because the driveway bowed it in ,and ive never done this before ! This is an art ! HELP !
alot of you guys dont realise how incredibly hard it is to lay 12 inch block with 1 hand. i showed this to my boss and even he dosent understand how this guy with a wrist of steel can do this. i tried this at work and I cant even come close. I can do my 8's and 6's with 1 hand but not 10's or 12's. this guy is real man
@stefanrocca You can lay block with one hand my friend! but once you get up a little ways higher than he is doing you can't do it it will wear you you but its a little faster to do it down low like this! I have never seen anyone use the back of their trowel to butter the front of the wall facing towards you. It can be done I am a small framed guy i weigh no more than 150 lbs. its all inn the wrist.
up date... I have practised alot and now I can do 10 inch and 12 inch with one hand. Its easier to lay them webbed side up so you can get a good grip. I cant lay 12's all day only from the 1st to 4th course.
@stefanrocca LMAO they make 12 inch lightweights that are lighter than a regular 8 inch block apparently you or your boss either one have done this very long i have been a mason for 20+ years and still to this day can do this and guess what so can my father LOL and he is well old haha but anyway so you are saying laying forward or backwards you cannot lay 12 inch block 1 handed if not you need to find a new line of work you would get laughed off the damn job if you worked with us
@APBTisBeast and to beat it all this guy is hella slow at laying too LOL but then again like my pops always says quality over quanity unless you are of hispanic decent they get 20 people on a small job and get the shit done fast and bid the jobs hella cheap they bid a birck job i also bid on the other day for 225 a thousand WHOA!!! how the hell can they be making any money is what i want to know
i dont know what kind of Styrofoam blocks you guys are laying out in jamokee land but over here in canada we use real blocks and we go 7 course high till we start our scaffold. I would love to see you blocks 7 courses high with 1 hand
@stefanrocca well we lay 8 courses high before we set up the scaffolds as well but i never said i lay one handed that high now did i and i am 100% sure you lay the exact same block we lay but if you did not know there is such thing as lightweight nlock then like i said you are a novice and haven't been in the business to damn long
@stefanrocca next time you get an order of block when the guy that delivers from the block plant look at his sheet or look at the tag on the block there selves see if it doesn't say lightweight or heavyweight 12's 8's or whatever you are laying
@stefanrocca this shit is nuts like that must slam the block in i agree that actually is amazing like iv seen crews that use to guys to lay each block , to do that with one hand now thats production
The verticle piece is an expansion material used in commercial masonry. The block he was using is a 8" x 12" x 16" CMU (concrete masonry unit) or 12" block. Many masons also call it a "corner 12" , a "square-end" or "shash-block" because of the channel formed in the block used for windows. That particular mason was pretty good, but was a little slow (but I'm not as fast as I used to be either! Been doing it for 25 years).
yes it is fuckin funny ,u know y my white boss dont want white boys ni the company ,because they lay bricks real fucked up,ho and i get pay the same as u or more am in the international union of bricklayers &allied craftworkers gracias ......
Hey Man, your holding the trowel the wrong way...why don't you also take the mortar cut-off from the top of the block for your next head joint ? C-ya at the Spec-mix 500.
i like this video just because the guy takes his time and is really neat, he's really good at what he does, iv'e just completed completed college and cant wait to build my own house's in the future. lovely work
Man i love to watch this video. It is so relaxing to watch a good tradesman at his trade. I have laid bricks and blocks for 5 years and everytime i watch this video it gets me excited to go out the next day and lay some more bricks and blocks. Great video with a great example of good, clean work by a mason that takes pride in what he does. My hat goes off to him and hope one day for him to post some more videos. Like the music too...perfect:) thanks for sharing:)
dont get mad donald one day u will learn how to lay block just like a mexican ,cause believe me white boys are not made for this kind of work ,thats y contractors want just mexicans working for them, white boys are made for mcdonalds or whataburger.......
well mr jellybalboa that , i didnt even know ,am from usa i just like what i do ,i didnt know ya work with a lot of brick, in britain i guess ya do good brick work then.........
well mr jellybalboa that , i didnt even know ,am from usa i just like what i do ,i didnt know ya work with a lot of brick, in britain i guess ya do good brick work then..............
@aguilas77c2as unfortunately its a bit quite at the moment hope it picks up in the summer. how much do you charge over there for laying brick and block(per brick and block)
if you know how to do bricklaying and you have been doiong it for a long time it is easey espechley cus the bed joind and the perps arnt full it is just top hat and tailed
THAT'S A REAL JORNEYMAN MASON, UNLIKE MEXICAN MASON CHEAP AND THEY DO A LAUSY JOB, THEY DON'T GIVE A F....BELIEVE ME I WORK WITH THOSE GUYS JUST LOOK AT THE ROAD IT'S POTHOLE EVERY WHERE AND THEY THINK THEY ARE BEST CONSTRUCTION WORKER IN THE USA.
@donald62ful don....the mexicans are great masons i have 60 here in stamford ct...the fucking guatemalans SUCK and they think there the best ....i fired over 200 in the last 2 years....mexicans from ranchos not from any citys in mexico..are great...
@TheShafenator1 Only if you want a worn out back by the age of 27! I have been doing this since I was around 14 years old.. And helped my dad when i was younger as well.
@TheShafenator1 yeah but you only got one set of joints and one back lol trust and believe i am already having problems from laying brick i started when i was around 10 and im 27 now...my dad had me helping him when i was ripe and young...thats why i am so short lol
Pretty good video with consistent masonry skills. I am wondering how much fun it is to clean that control joint of grout after it leaks out because he didnt cross web the CJ? And why is there a half in the wall on the near side of the CJ? Also, how much extra grout was wasted after it flowed through those BB block? With the ladder wire in use it can tell that the wall will be hollow with only grouted steel cells. All in all, a good video showing an experienced tradesman at work. I liked it.
@fmlymn1 all in all a good vid.why the nit picking?.everyone has different methods of work.do you think you really are the best brickie that walked this earth?.the guy´s good.and i can´t see your work posted anywhere.
@Jrm4cam You're right about most block being stucco, plus we use tiebeams and not bondbeams, so your height is not important. If you lose an inch in 8' it doesn't matter cause it's made up in the tiebeam, as long as it's plumb and level. You also have to remember that your not holding the block as long so it's not as much a strain as you might think even though you're laying more. Also most northern guys can't get past "the way they've always done it" to work down here; just to slow.
@originaldanman I'll work beside you or anyone else from Florida. I do it it often here. I have two arms and two legs just like you. Get over yourself.
@Jrm4cam First of all it's S. Fl. N. Fl. Masons are almost as slow as you guys. You may work beside me but you can't keep up. It's okay to admit that you can't lay more than 300 block a day. I know that I can't lay more than 600 or 700 brick a day I'm a slow brick mason. So what! Why is it so hard to put down your pride and admit that things are done differently in other parts of the country? i.e. We lay more block down here than you do up there, except it, it's okay!
@Jrm4cam you can tell he has full joints he's buttering both there all like closure blocks he's puting in this guy's not flying but he's consistant, this is a career i don't think he wants to be cripple for the sake of showing off!
@jm4cam & @MrMason345 Guy's I'm sure your fine "Brick Masons" of which I don't claim to be although I do lay brick on occasion. But please talk from experience. Don't quote "facts" without evidence. Down her (S. Fla) we lay block, and that's just about all we do. You can kiss your job and count goodbye if you put two men on a block. Can you guys put in 500 non lightweight 12's a day by yourselves? I do and I know several other guys that do also, and no one ever puts the line on the inside.
@evan5159 Surely you don't mean on a house! And I assume you mean either lightweight 12's or 8's. Because who can't lay 600 on a warehouse, department store, fence wall or any solid wall. How about try laying 600 on a house with Z leads, multiple windows, piers, and corners, with rebar 4' or higher 32 inches part or less, with 3 in every corner. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that does that these days no matter where you put the line. But I do it every day on those conditions.
@originaldanman actually we do a lot of basements out of tens and twelves. 45 degree angle walls z leads all good stuff. if my masons dont lay 400 a day there looking for a new job. that being said, the guy is a freakin beast. twelves one handed is impressive

DIPwhenyourSICK 9 months ago
I've been laying block for 23 years, and I can't do that w/ 12" blocks either, also for those who say he's not fast, well he's definetley not slow either, he can work in my crew anytime he wants!
giodazip 9 months ago
That's some sticky morter. I've never been able to get it that way.
Captainskinnybeard 9 months ago
sure hes not fast or anything but he is very clean and the quality is defidently there. like I said earlier. hes laying 12 inch block with 1 hand. If this guy can go anywhere in the world and work
stefanrocca 9 months ago
This guy can lay with percision and I like how he butters both end of the block. His work area is clean too.
eburshtan0720 9 months ago

Great job.
Snowwie88 9 months ago
@Snowwie88 Once the wall is finished, you would poor grout inside. With rebar and durawall it is strong.
eburshtan0720 9 months ago
Ya it's hard to lay 12' with one hand but if they are light weight then they are much easier to lay

I got roped into helping my father in law with his foundation wall .10inch block , just repairing the wall because the driveway bowed it in ,and ive never done this before ! This is an art ! HELP !
wantedbythefbi 9 months ago
those hav gotta be lightweight blocks listen to when he taps the block it sounds more hollow and light then a regular block
123gilbertron 9 months ago
i need to learn like now
smilexa 9 months ago
alot of you guys dont realise how incredibly hard it is to lay 12 inch block with 1 hand. i showed this to my boss and even he dosent understand how this guy with a wrist of steel can do this. i tried this at work and I cant even come close. I can do my 8's and 6's with 1 hand but not 10's or 12's. this guy is real man
stefanrocca 9 months ago 21
@stefanrocca
That's the truth. Either those are LIGHTWEIGHT 12s, or that guy has muscles like Arnold AND titanium steel bionics in his wrist.
bonanzatime 9 months ago
@stefanrocca im not sure but that look like 10 inch no?...maybe im wrong but 10 or 12 with 1 hands hes a beats
doudou101 9 months ago
@stefanrocca So true
MASTERJKJ 6 months ago
@stefanrocca You can lay block with one hand my friend! but once you get up a little ways higher than he is doing you can't do it it will wear you you but its a little faster to do it down low like this! I have never seen anyone use the back of their trowel to butter the front of the wall facing towards you. It can be done I am a small framed guy i weigh no more than 150 lbs. its all inn the wrist.
whitecollardistortio 6 months ago
@stefanrocca
up date... I have practised alot and now I can do 10 inch and 12 inch with one hand. Its easier to lay them webbed side up so you can get a good grip. I cant lay 12's all day only from the 1st to 4th course.
stefanrocca 6 months ago
@stefanrocca LMAO they make 12 inch lightweights that are lighter than a regular 8 inch block apparently you or your boss either one have done this very long i have been a mason for 20+ years and still to this day can do this and guess what so can my father LOL and he is well old haha but anyway so you are saying laying forward or backwards you cannot lay 12 inch block 1 handed if not you need to find a new line of work you would get laughed off the damn job if you worked with us
APBTisBeast 5 months ago
@APBTisBeast and to beat it all this guy is hella slow at laying too LOL but then again like my pops always says quality over quanity unless you are of hispanic decent they get 20 people on a small job and get the shit done fast and bid the jobs hella cheap they bid a birck job i also bid on the other day for 225 a thousand WHOA!!! how the hell can they be making any money is what i want to know
APBTisBeast 5 months ago
@APBTisBeast
i dont know what kind of Styrofoam blocks you guys are laying out in jamokee land but over here in canada we use real blocks and we go 7 course high till we start our scaffold. I would love to see you blocks 7 courses high with 1 hand
stefanrocca 5 months ago
@stefanrocca well we lay 8 courses high before we set up the scaffolds as well but i never said i lay one handed that high now did i and i am 100% sure you lay the exact same block we lay but if you did not know there is such thing as lightweight nlock then like i said you are a novice and haven't been in the business to damn long
APBTisBeast 5 months ago
@stefanrocca next time you get an order of block when the guy that delivers from the block plant look at his sheet or look at the tag on the block there selves see if it doesn't say lightweight or heavyweight 12's 8's or whatever you are laying
APBTisBeast 5 months ago
@stefanrocca this shit is nuts like that must slam the block in i agree that actually is amazing like iv seen crews that use to guys to lay each block , to do that with one hand now thats production

What is that vertical metal piece that sits in the channel cut in the blocks?
is it just a way to make sure spacing is good every so often?
TheIceBurglar 10 months ago
The verticle piece is an expansion material used in commercial masonry. The block he was using is a 8" x 12" x 16" CMU (concrete masonry unit) or 12" block. Many masons also call it a "corner 12" , a "square-end" or "shash-block" because of the channel formed in the block used for windows. That particular mason was pretty good, but was a little slow (but I'm not as fast as I used to be either! Been doing it for 25 years).

I liked it.

Also most northern guys can't get past "the way they've always done it" to work down here; just to slow.
originaldanman 1 year ago
@originaldanman I'll work beside you or anyone else from Florida. I do it it often here. I have two arms and two legs just like you. Get over yourself.
Jrm4cam 1 year ago
@Jrm4cam First of all it's S. Fl. N. Fl. Masons are almost as slow as you guys. You may work beside me but you can't keep up. It's okay to admit that you can't lay more than 300 block a day. I know that I can't lay more than 600 or 700 brick a day I'm a slow brick mason. So what! Why is it so hard to put down your pride and admit that things are done differently in other parts of the country? i.e. We lay more block down here than you do up there, except it, it's okay!
originaldanman 1 year ago
@originaldanman Still waiting for that video.

@originaldanman Exactly what I thought i'd see. Fast and rough. It looks sellable from 30ft. Is this howell masonry?
Jrm4cam 1 year ago
@Jrm4cam Yep! Exactly what I've been telling you but down here it's sellable from 2' not 30', straight, plumb, level, and no voids.
originaldanman 1 year ago
@Jrm4cam you can tell he has full joints he's buttering both there all like closure blocks he's puting in this guy's not flying but he's consistant, this is a career i don't think he wants to be cripple for the sake of showing off!
cndbrn791 1 year ago
@cndbrn791 WTF are you talking about? I wasn't even refering to him. His work is nice.
Jrm4cam 1 year ago
If he plays with his trowel any more between block he'll have carpel tunnel before he even gets that wall topped out.
josh6575 1 year ago
@jm4cam & @MrMason345 Guy's I'm sure your fine "Brick Masons" of which I don't claim to be although I do lay brick on occasion. But please talk from experience. Don't quote "facts" without evidence. Down her (S. Fla) we lay block, and that's just about all we do. You can kiss your job and count goodbye if you put two men on a block. Can you guys put in 500 non lightweight 12's a day by yourselves? I do and I know several other guys that do also, and no one ever puts the line on the inside.
originaldanman 1 year ago
@originaldanman um my masons lay 600 a day and our lines are on the inside
evan5159 9 months ago
@evan5159 Surely you don't mean on a house! And I assume you mean either lightweight 12's or 8's. Because who can't lay 600 on a warehouse, department store, fence wall or any solid wall. How about try laying 600 on a house with Z leads, multiple windows, piers, and corners, with rebar 4' or higher 32 inches part or less, with 3 in every corner. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that does that these days no matter where you put the line. But I do it every day on those conditions.
originaldanman 9 months ago 2
@originaldanman actually we do a lot of basements out of tens and twelves. 45 degree angle walls z leads all good stuff. if my masons dont lay 400 a day there looking for a new job. that being said, the guy is a freakin beast. twelves one handed is impressive
evan5159 8 months ago
@evan5159 Please! You do realize that he's laying lightweight 12's don't you? They weigh less then a regular 8" block. I lay regular not lightweigh
