to get more realism the elements have to have light interaction. global illumination. the look of a material is a function of the light around it.

another good trick is to recreate a real metal object so you get the realism right instead of the simpler mental picture of what a material should look like.

This is really well made considering pretty much one person made it. I'm guessing some of the people leaving negative comments have little to no experience with 3D animation. This was a rather ambitious project, especially for one person. You had a lot on your plate between animating, modeling, texturing, lighting, rigging, camera matching, compositing, filming, special effects, and sound. Awesome job!

further adue, some extra dialogue in the beginning and some filler shots would be nice since the progress is too fast, the introduction felt very "forced", specially when the actor said "this looks rusty", it looks like he's there for the line and not into that scene, he didn't even seem like he was "checking" the robot like the robot isn't really there, a "placeholder" like a coathanger for the actor to interact with would at least make it so he's looking at something, not just saying a line.

other quirks would be when the robot speaks before he blows up, totally bad, he should have added some high pitch sound and have the robot just say something without that "ha ha" then the actor not giving this "aaah", suprized look would be enough with a quieter faster gasp, (expression didn't cut it also). the smoke (specially on his clothes) looks too "pasted" and the smoke animation itself is too fast and too long, actual burn marks and tears on the clothes would add to this effect even more

those of you who are learning from these clips, note how the robot doesn't look good indoor and kinda good outdoor? that's because of no attention to lighting, focus points, shadows, surroundings matching (robot too crisp on a soft surroundings), camera should be still with a tripod and progressing with several shots rather than have a cameraman move creating the horrible shakes, misuse of bullet time, i'd skip that and just show the robot get hit, or shoot bullet time from another angle...
