If someone was wanting to get into bluegrass, & asked me to recommend something to listen to, the first I would recommend would be TBAB, any of them, & the 2nd would be go buy JD Crowe & The New South, rounder 044...one of the best.
What is so striking about this clip is the fact that they are obviously having one hell of a good time. In the end, isn't that the point of making music?
I miss Tony's singing voice too, but one way or the other, he's an awe inspiring picker with perfect timing and great taste.
Watch Mark Shatz playing Bass in the back row. Not only is he a great Bass player, he is clearly enjoying the performance. Great group and great song!
I don't know how well you personally know Tony Rice, but Tony can speak just fine. He has in later years brought guitar playing to a new level. Please appreciate that instead of focusing on the negative aspects of his voice. He's a top notch musician and a superlative human being.
Thanks for replying but I wasn't putting hime down at all. When I saw the Alison Krauss DVD 100 Miles or more live from the tracking room, Tony was talking and I noticed his voice sounded real rough and not smooth like it used to. I love his playing very much and like I said I didn't mean to even sound like I was putting him down in any way at all. God bless.
I personally know Tony and i agree his guitar playing is top notch as always but even though he can speak fine with no pain or straining...if youve known him for years then you can hear how gravely his voice has become....I realize that you want to take up for Tony but dont deny reality
Unfortunately no.. There were 6 Volumes released on cd by Rounder...The first 4 are by far the best. And the only other thing I know of is a Live Bootleg CD I happen to own from 1981 featuring them on stage in California and the quality is amazing....
Thanks, for the reply, I have every album Tony has played on from early bluegrass alliance to current. It seems odd that these videos arent archived somewhere- this is from the old TNN network I think. Programming like this is just not on TV anymore
This is the Frets Wards Show from 1987 that aired on the old TNN show Nashville Now....
Frets magazine that presented the yearly awards went out of buisness and after being changed to Music City Tonight, then Prime Time Country in the 1990s TNN also was bought out...Only way to get these old shows now is bootleg or old VHS dubs such as this..
@Glockem I remember one of Tony's instrumentals on The Weather Channel Channel. I learned, that day, what the weather was like in Fiji, Alaska and Cambodia.
He doesn't sing too much. He used to do some singing I think with Boone Creek and then on the last Alison Krauss tour he sang on the Ron Block song Along The Way
Hicks is decked out in that fine suit, boots, and hat (pins included)...a proud son of Caldwell County, NC

I'm pretty sure Tony is on the verge of crying at 2:00-watch him on that verse. He's feelin' it! This music is mighty powerful!

Uhh???? I don't know about Tony cryin but I was enjoying Hick's double stops behind that verse.

Also check out JD's backup behind that verse. Classic bluegrass banjo.

donnyaldridge 4 years ago
