@stubren25 - actually lots of animals have that. Lots of them dont kill their own kind, and kill only other species for food. - unlike us, we kill eachother for lots of things. - some monkeys and certainly apes show they have a sense of what is right/wrong , like stealing.
Actually morality is not that different from person to person throughout the world.
most cultures frown on murder and stealing. Of course there are those that murder and steal but in most cultures they are punished accordingly, This "conscience" is unique to the human species, animals don't have this. My question is where does this "conscious" come from, or knowledge of right and wrong? Does it really matter what we do on this earth? If there is no afterlife it doesn't matter what we do.
Dukeheart, I know you are sincere in your beliefs but you haven't defined where the definition of "good" and "bad" comes from. Unless you are using the Judeo-Christian definition of good and bad. If that is the case you are actually using God's law. If someone is an atheist it shouldn't even matter that people think he or she is moral, because in the end it really doesn't matter. For the honest atheist there is no judge or jury and he can do what ever he wants because to him death is the end
@stubren25 If our "moral compass" is installed by god, why are they different from person to person?
"For the honest atheist there is no judge or jury and he can do what ever he wants because to him death is the end"
I find these kind of statements extremely worrying. Are you really saying that the only thing preventing you behaving like a complete selfish ass and acting out any whim which pleases you, regardless of it's effect on others, is the threat of eternal damnation? I think not.
@meucunt1 Ethics are innate,Compassion is endowed on all parents and their off-spring at birth ,organized religion only 'underlines' these Ethics already imprinted on our hearts. The truth is wicked people are gonna do wicked things, good people are gonna do good things, but if you want a good person to do wicked things you need religion.
I believe we have personal feelings and a conscious. God put them there so we would do what is right. God is like a mom or dad, he doesn't tell you what is wrong just for the fun of it. He is trying to guide you and those around you to a richer, fuller life. If you take God out of the equation each person can do whatever he wants without fear of any retribution. A person like this is, in a way, his own God. He is sovereign in his own mind and right or wrong is his own prerogative.
@stubren25 That's as may be, what I am saying is that if someone is good only because they fear divine retribution, then they are not really good at all. They *behave* good because God forces them to, under threatg of eternal torment. On the other hand people who don't believe in God, and can, as you say, can do anything they want, and *choose* to do good, these people are far more moral than people who behave good because they are literally "God-fearing".
@Dukehart70 Um, you sound a little self righteous and condescending. Just for argument's sake, if there is no "sky-daddy" why is it bad to hurt people and why is it good to help people? If there is a "sky-daddy" there is accountability and justice for those (the Midianites) who break the law (ie: the Ten Commandments). If there is no 'sky-daddy" we are our own judge and jury and it doesn't really matter what we do. I decide my own truth, therefore there is no retribution for what I do.
@stubren25 So, what you are saying is that the only reason you don't hurt other people is your fear of divine retribution. That you have no personal feelings or conscious. I help people, because when I do, I feel good about myself. Every time I've hurt someone, I've felt bad about myself. I don't want to feel bad about myself, so I don't hurt people.
I'd like to ask Mr. Brown one question. If there is no God, on what basis does he define Hitler or Hussein evil? Where does his concept of right and wrong come from?
@stubren25 The Bible says that Moses ordered his officers to kill all the Midianites, leaving only the virgin girls so they could be raped. It says that Moses was a righteous man. So let me ask you: where does *your* concept of right and wrong come from? Because I think you're a better person than that.
@pbevin My question is where does morality come from? If there is no God there is no real right or wrong. There would be no accountability and therefore no punishmment. Therefore, to say Hitler or Hussein were evil, as Mr. Brown said, is based on what? Where does he,or anyone get the authority to proclaim this. Unless they are using the Ten Commandments as there model, and where do these commandments come from? On what basis do you call Moses "unrighteous"?
@stubren25 Moses was unrighteous for the same reason Hitler was unrighteous: they both instigated genocide - Hitler against the Jews, and Moses against the Midianites. If you feel revulsion about what Hitler did, you should also feel revulsion toward Moses.
@pbevin What I am saying if there is no God an individual is his own judge and jury, and it doesn't really matter what he or she does. That individual would decide his own truth and there would be no retribution for their actions since there would be no higher authority to be accountable for. If there is a God there is a higher power, accountability (the Law - Ten Commandments) and justice. In this case the Midianites (Hitler also) blatantly broke the law and suffered the consequences.
@stubren25 - actually lots of animals have that. Lots of them dont kill their own kind, and kill only other species for food. - unlike us, we kill eachother for lots of things. - some monkeys and certainly apes show they have a sense of what is right/wrong , like stealing.

It's actually very simple. Its bad to hurt people (without their permission). Its good to help people. Simple as that.

Um, its real simple, Christians. SOME of us know that it is bad to hurt people, good to help people without needing to be told by some sky-daddy.
